Christ, Be Our Light: An Epiphany Encounter, Marie T. Racine Osb Jul 2021

Christ, Be Our Light: An Epiphany Encounter, Marie T. Racine Osb

Obsculta

Can hymn singing during liturgy affect the worshipping community’s life in the world? This paper proposes that singing the hymn Christ, Be Our Light by Bernadette Farrell during the liturgy of the Feast of the Epiphany can help transform the hearts of the worshipping community and compel its members to the social action highlighted in the hymn. An examination of the theology of the Feast through the lens of its proper prayers, a theological and literary analysis of the lyrics and analysis of the musical setting of the hymn reveal a strong connection between hymn and Feast. A theology of …

Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman Jul 2021

Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman

Obsculta

Religion frames the lives and minds of individuals who practice the Christian faith. Regarding the mind, this statement can be understood both figuratively and literally. The thought processes of human beings who claim to believe in God are strongly influenced by their perspective of Deity and what they think God's primary characteristic is. While some view God as loving, others view God as mainly angry and punishing. The way this question is answered by an individual reveals much about his or her neurocircuitry and which brain structures are most active and developed. These circuits and structures then impact the behaviors …

Real Presence Imaged In Friendship, James Voeller Fbp Jul 2021

Real Presence Imaged In Friendship, James Voeller Fbp

Obsculta

This reflection is aimed at considering another way of looking at the Sacrament of the Eucharist through the Christian belief of what it means to be truly human. Understanding humans as symbol-making beings allow us to consider relationship or friendship as a basic sacrament of God’s saving presence. Humans need a greater awareness of humanness, to wake up and know what is going on.

Petrine Ministry In The Catholic Church, John Toan Phan Jul 2021

Petrine Ministry In The Catholic Church, John Toan Phan

Obsculta

“Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31-32). These words of Jesus to Simon reveal to us about Simon and his mission. Indeed, though Simon is weak and could be tempted, Jesus always prays for him so that he became a foundation of the Church: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” (Mt 16:18). In …

We Come From The Same Body: Reflecting On The Feasibility Of Women's Participation In Liturgical Services From The Perspective Of Susan A. Ross’S Feminist Theology, And Reflecting On The Practice Of Relevant Theories In The Diocese Of Hong Kong, Wong Kwan Yau

Obsculta

In this paper, I discuss the relationship between feminism and women’s liturgical service in the church from three aspects. In the first part, I will give a general description about the development of women’s social status, hoping to show that how women have always struggling to survive and strive for reasonable treatment in societies dominated by men. In the second part, I will turn to the work of Susan A. Ross, a Catholic feminist theologian, and show how from a feminist perspective, women can serve the church with men with their unique circumstances and advantages, and at the same time, …

In Defense Of Doubt(Ing Thomas), Meghan Stretar

On Revelation, Faith, And Justice, Joseph Penny Jul 2021

On Revelation, Faith, And Justice, Joseph Penny

Obsculta

Defined as the relational self-disclosure of Godself, divine revelation has the potential to propel us ever deeper into the mystery of the crucified God. In a faith-filled response to the Paschal Mystery's salvific and liberating promise, we can traverse the ontological gap between humanity and divinity, but how does this embodied revelation influence the trajectory of social justice? This paper embarks on a methodological endeavor to articulate the purpose of divine revelation.

Homiletical Exegesis On John 21:15-19, Toni Marie Nichols Jul 2021

Homiletical Exegesis On John 21:15-19, Toni Marie Nichols

Obsculta

This is a homiletical exegesis on John 21:15-19. It brings together Peter's denial of Jesus during the Passion and Jesus' restoration of Peter, revealing an important message of John's Gospel--victory is achieved in remaining faithful to the end. In 1944 from the Ravens Bruck concentration camp, Corrie ten Boom and her sister, Betsy left us with an example of how to live into this Gospel message.

Right Seeing: Means And End In Patristic Monastic Lives, Jason Horstman Jul 2021

Right Seeing: Means And End In Patristic Monastic Lives, Jason Horstman

Obsculta

Right seeing is a central motif in the biographical Lives of Saints Antony and Macrina. ‘Right seeing’, used here to signify the alignment of one’s vision with truth, is manifest variously as ‘the discernment of spirits’, as firmly hopeful trust in the revelation of the divine, and as perceiving the world from the divine perspective. Manifest in these ways, right seeing is both a guide for ascetic training the telos of which is union with God, and it is the fruit of that very union with God unto which askesis aspires.

There are 20 canons from the Code of Canon Law cited in this document. This paper was originally written for a course on Introduction to Ecclesiastical Law.

On Silence In The Rule Of St. Benedict: A Study Of Chapter 6: 1-6, Karen F. Arce Jul 2021

On Silence In The Rule Of St. Benedict: A Study Of Chapter 6: 1-6, Karen F. Arce

Obsculta

This paper is a study of Chapter 6: On Silence in The Rule of St. Benedict. It studies verses 1-6. It briefly includes verses 7 and 8, which reinforce Benedict's value of humility and the exhortation to refrain from useless conversation. This study shows the value of silence as a way to stop all interior and exterior chatter in order to have the chance to listen to God, one’s neighbors and oneself. This study also gives a deeper understanding of the Latin word taciturn Tate which emphasizes a state of being which opens the person for a deeper listening.

Pauline Theology: The Interdependently Called Body Of Christ, Katryna Bertucci Jun 2021

Pauline Theology: The Interdependently Called Body Of Christ, Katryna Bertucci

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Utilizing the mindset of theology defined as faith seeking understanding, this paper will explore the apostle Paul’s theology on vocation and calling in relation to the “Body of Christ.” It will first aim at exploring Paul’s theology on calling and vocation of the Body of Christ by highlighting 1 Corinthians 12, followed by zooming out to consider recent scholarship on more general Pauline theology. It will then demonstrate how interpretations of Paul’s theology have been utilized and/or critiqued over time in its implementation in relation to vocation and calling. It will conclude with an analysis of newer perspectives of how …

The Glory Of The Lord Whose Likeness Is As The Appearance Of A Human Being/Adam: A Study Of Ezekiel’S Son Of Man/Adam Anthropology, Timothy R. Schmeling May 2021

The Glory Of The Lord Whose Likeness Is As The Appearance Of A Human Being/Adam: A Study Of Ezekiel’S Son Of Man/Adam Anthropology, Timothy R. Schmeling

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Ezekiel has often been criticized as a dehumanizing book. Still it is alternative humanisms that have done so much to dehumanize mankind with the totalitarianism of self-deifying individualism or the totalitarianism of collectively-imposed manmade metanarratives. Far from being a dehumanizing book, the objective of the son of man/Adam is certainly to purge his hearers of all anthropologies of autonomy and license, but this Adamic priestly prophet does this to eschatologically resurrect in them an anthropology of dependence and true freedom. Reasserting the creation theology and anthropology of Genesis, Ezekiel insists that authentic humanism, Edenic humanism (i.e., the original humanism), is …

The Power, (Problem), And Potential Of Prayer, Meghan E. Stretar May 2021

The Power, (Problem), And Potential Of Prayer, Meghan E. Stretar

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper illuminates the complex and nuanced relationship between mental health and prayer, particularly seeking theologically grounded understandings of prayer and of our relationship with God in times of mental distress that goes beyond intercessory prayer. The paper begins with an evaluation of social structures that cause mental health problems (notably in college students). A discussion on emotional agility, scarcity, and vulnerability serves as a transition to examining this question from a theological perspective, the second main section of this paper. In this section, I claim that a misunderstanding of the divine-human relationship and of prayer is one potential source …
