The Prospect For Hindu-Christian Interaction, Margaret Chatterjee Jan 1989

The Prospect For Hindu-Christian Interaction, Margaret Chatterjee

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I take as a starting point the last sentence of the Editorial in Vol. I of the new Bulletin: "With a few notable exceptions...contemporary Hindu thinkers do not seem to be engaged with Christianity in the way their predecessors were at the turn of the century (e.g. Roy, Sen, Dayananda and Radhakrishnan)". This is a very insightful observation and it is worth dwelling on. Let us begin from the "Christian side" first. What considerations are encouraging some Christians to "take an interest" in Hinduism. Listing some of these may be convenient although probably too schematic, for combinations of the following …

The Scope Of Dialogue, Anand Amaladass Jan 1989

The Scope Of Dialogue, Anand Amaladass

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

India has been the land of intense curiosity for others for many centuries and continues to be so. One can trace the history of relationship between India and the outside world as a fruitful study to gain some insight into the Indian attitude towards outsiders. In the first issue of this Bulletin the editor presented a succinct survey of dialogical movements in Indian History. Obviously in a brief essay of this type one cannot expect a comprehensive report covering all the historical events and persons who have contributed to the dialogical movements between the Hindu and the Christian world. In …

Jacques-Albert Buttat, A Pioneer Of Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 1989

Jacques-Albert Buttat, A Pioneer Of Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The name Cuttat does not seem to appear often in current dialogue literature in spite of the key role which he played in getting Hindu-Christian dialogue in India on the way. Dr. J.A. Cuttat, son of a wealthy Swiss banker, had been professor of philosophy at the Sorbonne before being called to serve as Ambassador of Switzerland to India. His appointment had much to do with his own interests. He had been an avid student of Indian thought for many years and quickly established a personal friendship with Jawaharlal Nehru and, to a lesser degree, with Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. As he …

Viewpoints: The Value Of Inter-Faith Dialogue, L. Sundaram Jan 1989

Viewpoints: The Value Of Inter-Faith Dialogue, L. Sundaram

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The purpose of inter-faith dialogue is evidently not to arrive at or achieve a common set of beliefs giving up for the sake of unity one's own religion's cherished doctrines. Its aim is not to accomplish a merger, as of two political parties or groups, nor to arrive at the lowest measure of agreement in religious beliefs. If the participants in a dialogue are only "light half-believers in a casual creed who never deeply loved or deeply felt" their dialogue will remain at only a superficial level. The paradox therefore in such meetings is that those who dialogue must be …

Viewpoints: Why Dialogue With Hindus?, Gladys Ambat Jan 1989

Viewpoints: Why Dialogue With Hindus?, Gladys Ambat

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Christians of India like the Christians all over the world are a minority amidst "the nations" or peoples other than Christians. Christians in India have the unique privilege of living with a very God conscious people -- the Hindus. One cannot help but admire the simple piety of the millions who recently went for a holy dip to Varanasi. The faith, the sincerity and the utter devotion of the devotees are often beyond the understanding of those who believe that a true devotee should express his faith differently, the way Jesus said, "God is a spirit and they that …

Viewpoints: The Ongoing Dialogue, Raimundo Panikkar Jan 1989

Viewpoints: The Ongoing Dialogue, Raimundo Panikkar

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dialogue is more than a flippant or merely well-intentioned conversation. And the Hindu Christian Dialogue, in the present state of affairs, demands both a deep experience of one's own tradition and a sufficient knowledge of the other one. We do not begin anew. This dialogue is not of yesterday. It requires a certain knowledge of what has already happened. The history of this Encounter has a loaded karma.

Hindu-Christian Dialogue: A Review, Harold Coward Jan 1988

Hindu-Christian Dialogue: A Review, Harold Coward

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Hindu-Christian dialogue has had a long and checkered history. Up until the beginning of this century most of the Hindu-Christian interaction took place in India. The first half of this century saw the expansion of Hindu-Christian discussion to Europe and North America. World-wile pluralism in the decades since the Fifties has resulted in a gradual intensification of this interaction at both the lay and scholarly levels. But aside from sporadic events, there has been no broad and sustained Hindu-Christian dialogue.

Viewpoints: Dialogue In The Modern West, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 1988

Viewpoints: Dialogue In The Modern West, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Calgary Conference on Hindu-Christian Dialogue in September 1987, at which the idea of this bulletin was conceived, brought people together who came from places as distant as Hong Kong and Madras, Hamilton and Winnipeg, Kansas City and New York, Tokyo and Santiniketan, Waterloo and Geneva, Edmonton and Regina. Most of the participants had met before somewhere else -- very often in places very far from Calgary. All the Easterners present had lived for extended periods in the west, all the Westerners had been to the East -- some for many years. While the participants of this meeting may not …

Viewpoints: Dialogue In India, Anand Amaladass

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

If publications and dialogue meetings are of any indication, then the dialogue initiative has come to stay in India. During the last two decades this initiative has grown among Hindus and Christians, though it is difficult to give the exact percentage of Indians who are affected by the dialogue movement. In the name of dialogue various centres are opened by the Christian communities and well-informed Hindus participating in inter-religious seminars and prayer meetings are in the increase. They find that more of 'living-together' for a few days rather than formal discussions and seminars brings about a better result, creating fellowship …

Religious Society And The Family In Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1630 To 1740, Mary Macmanus Ramsbottom May 1987

Religious Society And The Family In Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1630 To 1740, Mary Macmanus Ramsbottom

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By the early seventeenth century, English dissenters had developed a vital tradition of voluntary religious exercise operating within the shadow of the established church. Those who immigrated faced a new world of possibilities for public expression of religious commitment. How three generations of New Englanders altered and adapted these habits of religious sociability is the subject of this study.

The dissertation examines religious culture in Charlestown, Massachusetts through the history of three institutions: the family, the private devotional society, and the local church. The focus throughout is on lay religiosity and the interrelation of "private" and "public" religious activities. Church …

The Living Parable Of The Peasant: A Comparative Study Of European/North American Scholars & The Community In Solentiname, Nicaragua In Their Understandings Of Four Lukan Parables, Ruth A. Bruner

Graduate Thesis Collection

The parables of Jesus have been interpreted in many ways and by many different methods in the history of the Christian community. Biblical scholars have wrestled with their interpretations throughout the centuries, and in the last five centuries increasing numbers of lay persons have had more direct access to further biblical study. Even more recently, liberation movements throughout the world--and especially in Latin America--have engaged the "common people," (peasants and campesinos), many of whom are illiterate, in biblical study.

The Spirituality Of War, Paul Valliere Jan 1983

The Spirituality Of War, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Starting from the assumption that war, whatever else it is, is a matrix of values rooted in some type of spirituality, the article presents a brief typology of spiritualities of war: holy war, heroic war, and political (or "just") war. The article concludes by discussing implications of the typology for current reflection on problems of war and peace in the nuclear age. (A fuller treatment of the typology and its applications may be found in Paul Valliere, Holy War and Pentecostal Peace [New York: The Seabury Press, 1983]).

"The Lady And The Wench" : A Practical Theodicy In Russian Literature., Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In the study of religion, it is important to distinguish broadly between two forms of theodicy: theoretical and practical. Both forms address the fundamental concern of all theodicy, "the justice of God," but they do so in different contexts and for different purposes.

Russian Orthodoxy And The Challenge Of Modernity: The Case Of Archimandrite Makary, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The challenge of modernity for Orthodoxy as experienced by Archimandrite Makary (Mikhail lakovlevich Glukharev) is presented here through a brief exposition of Makary's career, its successes, failures and inner tensions. Particular attention is given to Makary's role in the struggle for a Russian-language Bible.

Problem Of Liberal Orthodoxy In Russia, 1905, Paul Valliere Jan 1976

Problem Of Liberal Orthodoxy In Russia, 1905, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By the problem of Liberal Orthodoxy we mean a particular instance of the all-European and, indeed, worldwide problem of the adjustment of living religious traditions to a dynamic and distinct modern culture claiming, in greater or lesser degree, spiritual and practical autonomy in the direction of human affairs. The great revolutions of modern times, of which the Russian Revolution of 1905 is one, are particular instances of the advancing of this claim of autonomy. Liberal Orthodoxy is any Orthodoxy in modern times which envisages at least some opportunities for constructive and cooperative relationships with the forces of this modern culture; …

The Mind And Mission Of St. Francis Xavier, Warren Andrew Apr 1974

The Mind And Mission Of St. Francis Xavier, Warren Andrew

Graduate Thesis Collection

Francis Xavier is of historical importance in two respects: (1) he was one of the small band of men who, led by Ignatius of Loyola, founded the Society of Jesus, and (2) he was the first Christian missionary to Japan. In addition to these major points of importance, he life and work are in close relation to the historical events, both ecclesiastical and secular, of the first half of the sixteenth century. A more complete biographical study of Xavier must bring in the names and offices of numerous leaders of church and state in many countries. It must also, at …
