The Hindu Presence In Europe And Implications Of Interfaith Dialogue, Martin B. Baumann Jan 1998

The Hindu Presence In Europe And Implications Of Interfaith Dialogue, Martin B. Baumann

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The World's Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893 is often referred to as the catalytic start of organized interfaith activities in Canada and the United States. Europe, however, cannot look back to such a pioneering event. One may point to the Religions of the Empire Conference, held in 1924 in conjunction with the British Empire Exhibition in London, or the World Congress of Faiths in 1936. These incipient initiatives of an interfaith dialogue were confined to Great Britain only and did not reach the continent.

Prologue As Legitimation: Christological Controversy And The Interpretation Of John 1:1-18, James F. Mcgrath Jun 1997

Prologue As Legitimation: Christological Controversy And The Interpretation Of John 1:1-18, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Recent scholarship on the Fourth Gospel has suggested that this document was produced by a Christian community which was involved in an intense conflict with a local synagogue, the focus of which was christology. This study attempts to relate the Johannine prologue to this context, using Berger and Luckmann's model of legitimation . John's christological portrait of Jesus in the prologue is best understood in terms of the author's use of traditions and imagery which were authoritative to both him and his opponents, in order to defend the legitimacy of his and his community's beliefs. By looking at the prologue …

Russian Orthodoxy And Human Rights, Paul Valliere Jan 1997

Russian Orthodoxy And Human Rights, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This essay describes the situation and orientation of the Russian Orthodox Church with respect co human tights. Along the broad spectrum of rights I focus mainly on the civil rights of individuals and nonstate associations rather than the subsistence rights and rights to social services that figure so prominently in socialist theories of rights.

Occupation As Spiritual Activity, Brenda S. Howard, Jay R. Howard Jan 1997

Occupation As Spiritual Activity, Brenda S. Howard, Jay R. Howard

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Although spirituality is rarely explicitly mentioned in the occupational therapy literature, it is implied as an interwoven part of the human system. This article explores the meaning of occupation in the context of sociological and Judeo-Christian theological frameworks and the meaning of spirituality in the occupational therapy clinic. A case is made for acknowledging spirituality in clinical reasoning as a centralizing component of the patients' motivation and assignment of meaning to life.

Going Up And Coming Down In Johannine Legitimation, James F. Mcgrath Jan 1997

Going Up And Coming Down In Johannine Legitimation, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In his study of Johannine christology Wayne Meeks stressed the importance of understanding the ascent·descent schema in any attempt to understand this christology or explain its origin. The work of sociologists Berger and Luckmann on legitimation has the potential to shed light on an ear her stage in this development. Key passages in John show that ascent-descent language is linked to the motifs of the Son of man and wisdom, and suggest that John has developed these two traditional aspects of christology in response to objections and conflict over Jesus' qualifications to be the revealer, and his relationship to God …

Uncontrived Messiah Or Passover Plot? A Study Of A Johannine Apologetic Motif, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The aim of this article is not to weigh the merits of Schonfield's thesis in relation to the historical Jesus, but to suggest that the author of the Fourth Gospel was concerned to argue against similar claims being made by some of his Jewish contemporaries.

In Memoriam: Richard De Smet, S.J. (1916-1997), Bradley J. Malkovsky

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The passing away of Richard De Smet on 2 March 1997 marks the loss of one of the twentieth century's giants in Hindu-Christian dialogue. A Belgian by birth, Father De Smet, as he was generally known, or simply Father Richard, was a Jesuit priest and professor who established himself in India from the 1950s onward as a leader in the philosophical encounter of Hindu and Christian thought. His greatest area of expertise was in Sankara's Advaita Vedanta, and much of his life's work was devoted to reconciling what he considered to be the authentic teachings of Sankara with Christian thinking …

Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue, Klaus K. Klostermaier Jan 1997

Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue, Klaus K. Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

As an enthusiastic practitioner of Hindu-Christian dialogue in India in the sixties, I noted how frequently my Hindu dialogue partners resorted to modern science to make their points. They either drew parallels between ideas held by classical Indian authors and modern scientific findings, or they claimed "Vedic" origins for contemporary scientific or technical developments. More often than not they would perceive complete harmony between Vedanta and twentieth-century Western science, detailing how contemporary physics was supporting Advaita Vedanta or how Darwin's theory of evolution had been anticipated by Samkhya. Having had a lifelong interest in the sciences I found this turn …

How Should Religion And Science Be Creatively Related? A Christian Perspective, Robert John Russell Jan 1997

How Should Religion And Science Be Creatively Related? A Christian Perspective, Robert John Russell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Each of us, Hindu and Christian alike, must seek each other's wisdom on one of the fundamental issues of our time: how should we relate religion and science? On the one hand, each of us has been formed and shaped by, and has inherited the wisdom and blessing of one of the world's great religions, and we should be committed to the dialogue between, and the mutual enrichment of, these religions. Through these religions, we are invited to practise compassion, to seek justice, to obtain enlightenment, to live in harmony with the natural world, and to find healing, forgiveness, and …

Viewpoints: Hindu-Christian Dialogue During The Past Decade, S. Wesley Ariarajah Jan 1997

Viewpoints: Hindu-Christian Dialogue During The Past Decade, S. Wesley Ariarajah

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Perhaps it is not too much of an exaggeration to claim that future historians will consider the past decade to be one of the most crucial periods in the development of contemporary Hinduism, both in its native Indian subcontinent and in other parts of the world. In India itself, the expression of the collective Hindu political consciousness has never been more articulate and the goal of making India a "Hindu Nation" never before seemed a reality within reach. Even many Hindu intellectuals who keep close watch on the tenuous relationship between religion and politics in a multifaith India were taken …
