Hindu-Christian Dialogue: Revisiting The Tannirpalli Trinitys Original Vision, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 2003

Hindu-Christian Dialogue: Revisiting The Tannirpalli Trinitys Original Vision, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Living in India from 1961 to 1970 I intensively and extensively participated in Hindu-Christian dialogue at various levels, academic as well as existential, and I came to know personally most of the then leading figures. While Hindu friends even then kept regularly imploring their Christian counterparts to persuade their churches to desist from proselytizing, they welcomed and encouraged dialogue. During the last decades the relationship between Hindus and Christians in India has visibly deteriorated.

Swami Abhishiktananda's Interreligious Hermeneutics Of The Upanishads, Edward T. Ulrich Jan 2003

Swami Abhishiktananda's Interreligious Hermeneutics Of The Upanishads, Edward T. Ulrich

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Swami Abhishiktananda was a French monk who came to India in 1948 to establish an "inculturated" form of Christian monasticism, a monasticism which would not simply reflect a European heritage but would be truly Indian life and culture. These led him to become greatly enamored of the Upanishads and to enter their spiritual world. yet he maintained his identity as a Catholic priest and strove to integrate the Upanishads with Christianity.

Ethics And Genetic Engineering In Indian Philosophy, And Some Comparisons With Modern Western, Harold Coward Jan 2003

Ethics And Genetic Engineering In Indian Philosophy, And Some Comparisons With Modern Western, Harold Coward

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In the context of India, Genetic Engineering research and technology is well underway. The Government of India has issued statements indicating that India "will fully utilize the availability of genetic engineering resources ... for maximizing output besides working out a sustainable program ...." Between November 22, 1998 and March 21, 1999 no less than 32 stories of genetic engineering research or technology developments appeared in India media sources - particularly the PTI News Agency and the Inter-Press Service in Delhi. The research spans a wide range from genetic studies of the human population of the Indian sub-continent to various agricultural …

Advaita Vedanta And Marcus Borg: Opportunities For Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Anantanand Rambachan Jan 2003

Advaita Vedanta And Marcus Borg: Opportunities For Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dialogue between Hindus and Christians in recent times appears to be dominated by the controversies concerning proselytizing and conversion. While these are important issues and ought not to be overlooked in Hindu-Christian interactions, we ignore, to our mutual deprivation, the wealth of insight about the nature of God and the meaning of being religious that are the fruits of reflection, practice and experience in our traditions. Our exploration of these issues reveal shared convictions, challenging questions for each other and the recognition that religious growth does not occur only through encounters within the boundaries of one's own religious world. While …

Meeting 'The Mother Who Takes Across': Christian Encounters With The Fierce Goddesses Of Hinduism, Rachel Fell Mcdermott Jan 2003

Meeting 'The Mother Who Takes Across': Christian Encounters With The Fierce Goddesses Of Hinduism, Rachel Fell Mcdermott

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

This essay revolves around a simple question: what does Hindu-Christian dialogue look like from the Christian side when the Hindu side is represented by Saktism? Or, how do Christians, whether Protestant or Catholic, react and what do they learn when the Hindus they encounter worship a supreme female divinity who is both compassionate and wrathful, whose cult is often associated with blood sacrifice, whose philosophical underpinnings tend to be monistic, and some of whose devotees have been involved in esoteric, often sexual Tantric rites? Where are the cross-overs, the bridges to understanding?

Dr. Richard De Smet And Sankara's Advaita, T.S. Rukmani Jan 2003

Dr. Richard De Smet And Sankara's Advaita, T.S. Rukmani

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I have had the privilege of meeting Dr. Richard De Smet in Shimla at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, when we both participated in a Seminar organized by the Institute in 1989. We had opportunities of discussing Sankara's Brahman and the Christian concept of God at that time without being able to fully understand each other's position. That has been at the back of my mind all these years, and I was happy when Bradley Malkovsky asked me to write on Dr. De Smet's view of Sankara's Brahman for the Bulletin. I thus got an opportunity to revisit that …

Viewpoint: Fostering Dialogue And Interreligious Conversation, Deepak Sarma Jan 2003

Viewpoint: Fostering Dialogue And Interreligious Conversation, Deepak Sarma

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Since seeing Santosh Sivan's film, "The Terrorist," a few days ago, I have been unable to rid my mind of the haunting images of Malli, a troubled young woman who has been chosen for a mission as a suicide bomber. In this fictional account, Sivan successfully reveals that she is not merely a brainwashed fanatic but that she is as human as anyone else, despite the fact that she is planning a despicable act, the assassination of an important politician. She has fears, hopes, loves, and disappointments and is not simply an unfeeling automaton. By illustrating quite clearly her zeal …

Religious Conversions: An Indian Christian Point Of View, Michael Amaladoss Jan 2002

Religious Conversions: An Indian Christian Point Of View, Michael Amaladoss

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The phenomenon of conversions as changing one's religious affiliation has become an issue for lively discussion and even controversy in India today. Some do not see the need for them. others are ready to tolerate them, but decry the use of allurement or force. Force need not be physical: it could be psychological, social or even spiritual. Democracy is a game of numbers. Therefore the increase in the numbers of one religious group becomes a political problem, when religion has become a factor in politics. Some would like to keep religion a private affair that should not get mixed up …

The Politics And The Dharma Of Conversion: Reflections From The Mahabharata, Arti Dhand Jan 2002

The Politics And The Dharma Of Conversion: Reflections From The Mahabharata, Arti Dhand

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

This reflection is in the context of trends of the last decade in India, in which some Hindu nationalists have resisted the proselytizing activities of Christian missionaries with tactics of intimidation and terror.

The Controversy And Its Theological Implications, Judson B. Trapnell Jan 2002

The Controversy And Its Theological Implications, Judson B. Trapnell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The controversy concerning evangelization and conversions in contemporary India may be productively interpreted as a conflict between stories, between what John Haught refers to as "power-bestowing narratives," or between what Gerald Larson calls "comprehensive interpretive frameworks." These Hindu stories and Christian stories are "discordant," not only with each other, but with other stories within their own traditions, thus fostering the mutual mistrust that thoroughly colors the debate. My task is to sketch four such narrative frameworks, each centered upon an image of India and corresponding to one of four communities involved in the controversy: conservative Hindu nationalists, more secularist Hindus, …

Evangelization And Conversion Reconsidered In The Light Of The Contemporary Controversy In India: A Hindu Assessment, Anantanand Rambachan Jan 2002

Evangelization And Conversion Reconsidered In The Light Of The Contemporary Controversy In India: A Hindu Assessment, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The contemporary controversy in India, centered on the issue of evangelization and conversion, has elicited a variety of responses from both Hindus and Christians. Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a well known Vedanta teacher and founder of Arsha Vidya Pitham, equates conversion with violence because of the pain it causes to the family and community of the convert. He likens the religions of the world to ancient historical monuments and argues that these religions, like the pyramids of Egypt, must be preserved and protected. He expresses his approval for what he describes as "nonaggressive" religions that do not seek to win converts. …

Dialogue At/With The Kumbha Mela, M. Darrol Bryant Jan 2002

Dialogue At/With The Kumbha Mela, M. Darrol Bryant

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Hindus and Christians have entered into dialogue in a variety of ways. In the last issue of the Bulletin, C. Murray Rogers spoke of his own move to India more than a half century ago and becoming friends with Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims. In the same issue Shesagiri Rao recounts how "under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, a number of students ... took to the study of the Bible and the Gita." For myself, though I had Raimundo Panikkar as a teacher at Harvard Divinity School in 1966-67, it was meeting Hindus at international interfaith conferences in the 1970s and …

Viewpoint: Educational Activism: A Post 9/11 Reflection, Vasudha Narayanan Jan 2002

Viewpoint: Educational Activism: A Post 9/11 Reflection, Vasudha Narayanan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

On September 11, after doing some yoga, our nephew went to work. He was on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center, in the first building, when the plane hit the towers. Gopal was thirty two and loved music. In the months that followed, as our family grieves we are also trying to understand what is going on. Confronting hatred and violence which goes on in the name of religion, one becomes acutely sensitized to their linkage in particular religious traditions.
