Viewpoint: What I See: Little Indias, Caste, And The Church In The West, Rachel Fell Mcdermott

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Recently a New York Times article, "From Untouchable to Businesswoman" (July 22, 2010), carried the story of Kakuben Lalabhai Parmar, an illiterate Scheduled Caste woman from Gujarat who was selling her patchwork embroideries at New York's posh Asia Society. Thanks to intervention in India twenty years ago from SEWA, the Self-Employed Women's Association, she came out of seclusion in her house to participate in society, while helping to preserve the traditional handicrafts of her village. The result is a globe-trotting artisan-businesswoman who exchanges hugs with her clients, buys shampoos at CVS for her daughters back home in the village, and …

Adieu Raimon, A Dieu, Joseph Prabhu

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Raimon Panikkar, known to many in this Society of Hindu-Christian Studies as a teacher, scholar, mentor or friend, died at his home in Tavertet, near Barcelona, on August 26, 2010. He was ninety-one and had been in poor health for some time, but he did live to see the day when his Gifford Lectures, originally delivered in Edinburgh in 1989, and over which he had agonized ever since [he produced some nineteen different versions of parts of the texts], finally saw the light of day in June of this year as The Rhythm of Being (Orbis Books).

The Specter Of ‘Spirituality’—On The (In)Utility Of An Analytical Category, Chad M. Bauman Jul 2009

The Specter Of ‘Spirituality’—On The (In)Utility Of An Analytical Category, Chad M. Bauman

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

I would like to make it clear that nothing in this article should be taken as a comment, one way or another, on the question of whether "spirituality" deserves a place in higher education. I consider that issue a distinct one, though no doubt in some ways related to the one I am addressing here, particularly since many of those authors who write about spirituality do so in order to argue for greater institutional and classroom attention to the spiritual lives of college students.

In her response, Nadine Pence helpfully turns the conversation towards actual practices in teaching and the array of practical decisions that have to be made in the classroom and on campuses when it comes to addressing "Big Questions" and students' aspirations and interior lives. Several dimensions of her argument are worth amplification.

Jesus Christ As Poetic Symbol: Wilhelm Bousset’S Contribution To The Faith-History Debate, Brent A. R. Hege Jan 2009

Jesus Christ As Poetic Symbol: Wilhelm Bousset’S Contribution To The Faith-History Debate, Brent A. R. Hege

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Wilhelm Bousset, a leading member of the religionsgeschichtliche school and author of a seminal work on early Christology, Kyrios Christos, is typically regarded by reviewers of his work as a classic nineteenth-century liberal who sought a secure foundation for faith in the historical Jesus. However, this view of Bousset fails to appreciate the significant development of his theological perspective on the relationship between faith and history, a perspective that underwent a profound shift due to the influence of the English historian Thomas Carlyle and the Kantian philosopher Jakob Friedrich Fries. It is the influence of these two figures that enables …

Geschichte Und Historie: The Problem Of Faith And History, Brent A. R. Hege Jan 2009

Geschichte Und Historie: The Problem Of Faith And History, Brent A. R. Hege

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Faith at the Intersection of History and Experience is the first study in English of the theology of the German Lutheran theologian, Georg Wobbermin (1869–1943), who has been called a “captain of the liberal rearguard.” Widely read and discussed in his own lifetime, Wobbermin’s theology fell into obscurity as dialectical theology rose to prominence in the years following the First World War.

Hege presents the major themes of Wobbermin’s theology, particularly his analysis of the relationship between faith and history and his development of a religio-psychological theological method that places faith at the intersection of history and experience. Wobbermin’s critiques …

Rethinking Advaita: Who Is Eligible To Read Advaita Texts?, Anantanand Rambachan Jan 2009

Rethinking Advaita: Who Is Eligible To Read Advaita Texts?, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

My most recent work, The Advaita Worldview: God, World and Humanity, exemplifies two related movements. First, I join the growing stream of scholars who are making efforts to distinguish the interpretations of Sankara from later Advaita exegetes. The uncritical equation of Sankara's views with those of later exegetes needs to be challenged. Second, I contend that Advaita reflection and scholarship cannot limit itself to the clarification of Sankara's interpretations. These interpretations must also be critically evaluated in order for the tradition to be relevant and creative. It is problematic to assume that Sankara was immune from historical influences, cultural …

Reconstructing Advaita In John Thatamanil's "The Immanent Divine": Some Questions, Michael Mclaughlin Jan 2009

Reconstructing Advaita In John Thatamanil's "The Immanent Divine": Some Questions, Michael Mclaughlin

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The publication of John Thatamanil's The Immanent Divine allows us to ask many questions about projects in comparative theology and where they could lead us. I hope that my response to this interesting work will have the value of probing a little more into the tasks of comparative theology. There is no doubt that The Immanent Divine is a remarkable effort. it is also a book which taxes the academic reader who is probably not a specialist in Tillich and Advaita and the various versions of process theology, especially the distinctive version of Robert Neville. I will break down my …

Ecstasy And Nonduality: On Comparing Varieties Of Immanence, John J. Thatamanil Jan 2009

Ecstasy And Nonduality: On Comparing Varieties Of Immanence, John J. Thatamanil

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

For the benefit of those who have not read my book, let me offer a few framing remarks. I begin by noting that my initial working title for the book was Ecstasy and Nonduality, not The Immanent Divine. Although somewhat technical, the earlier title had the virtue of stipulating that my book compares two specific types of divine immanence. I root each sort of immanence in a fundamental scriptural locus within the Christian and Hindu traditions. In the Christian case, the scriptural text is Romans 8:26, "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not …

The Human Predicament, Alastair R. Mcglashan Jan 2009

The Human Predicament, Alastair R. Mcglashan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In this paper a comparison is presented between the analyses of the human condition offered by Christianity in terms of sin, and by Saiva Siddhanta in terms of anavam (darkness, ignorance). Following a summary of the Saiva teaching on anavam, more detailed comparisons are made between the two religions in relation to particular issues in which the outworking of those doctrines is seen, such as the nature of salvation, of the saviour and of the redeemed state, etc. Areas of difference and of common ground between the two religions are highlighted and discussed.

Ramanuja And Schleiermacher On Language: Comparative Theology For Constructive Theology, Jon Paul Sydnor

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The truth of the Veda is affirmed in the aphorism, 'The relation of words to facts is natural [autpattika: inherent, original, primordial] (Mimamsa Sutras I.I.7)'. Just as fire and water do naturally possess their properties like heat, just as the senses like sight and hearing are naturally productive of particular kinds of cognition, words also have a natural power of imparting knowledge.
