When Does The New Testament Economy Begin?, W. F. Beck Mar 1938

When Does The New Testament Economy Begin?, W. F. Beck

Concordia Theological Monthly

Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant (Heb. 3:5, 6; 8:6-13; 12:24), set aside the Old Covenant by means of His work of redemption during the thirty-three years of His humiliation (Gal 4:4, 5). In this period He fulfilled the Moral Law by keeping it (Rom. 5:19; 10:4), and by His suffering He freed us from its curse (Gal. 3:13). In this time He also substituted the reality of His atonement for the shadow of the Ceremonial Law and thus made the observance of its ordinances unnecessary (Col. 2:16, 17).

Recent Manuscript Discoveries, R. T. Du Brau Mar 1938

Recent Manuscript Discoveries, R. T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The keeper of the manuscripts in the British Museum, Mr. H. ldris Bell, has announced the more or less recent acquisition, all within the last three years, of still more fragments of Greek papyri relating to the gospels and antedating any of the New Testament manuscripts hitherto known. He described the first of these acquisitions in an article in the London Times of January 23, 1935. Our own American news weekly Time considered this find of new papyri of sufficient newsworthy import to refer to it promptly in its issue of February 4, 1935, and with refreshing accuracy.

Growth In Exegesis, W. Arndt Mar 1938

Growth In Exegesis, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

In continuing the series of discussions having to do with a pastor's professional development we come to exegesis, the exposition of the Bible. That Lutheran theologians, while not hostile to any legitimate field of theology, lay particular stress on exegesis has as solid and venerable a historical basis as one may wish for.

What The Liberal Theologian Thinks Of Verbal Inspiration, Th. Engelder Jun 1937

What The Liberal Theologian Thinks Of Verbal Inspiration, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is what J. S. Whale thinks: ''The modem man is not impressed by the mere citation of texts; he rightly wants to understand them, in their context. His very certainty that the Scriptures are the fount of divine wisdom - that it is indeed the Word of God which is spoken to him in the words of the Bible - has set him free from the bondage of the letter, the prison-house of verbal infallibility. It is no use shilly-shallying here; loyalty to truth in the shape of literary and historical criticism forbids it.

What The Liberal Theologian Thinks Of Verbal Inspiration, Th. Engelder

He thinks it is an obnoxious thing. He abhors the doctrine that the whole Bible is given by inspiration of God, every word of it absolutely infallible. He execrates verbal inspiration. J. S. Whale, a Congregationalist, president of Chesunt College, Cambridge, takes occasion to speak of it in his treatise The Christian Answer to the Problem of Evil, published 1936. He speaks of it in this wise: "The modern man is not impressed by the mere citation of texts; he rightly wants to understand them in their context.

The Concept Of God's Holiness According To The Old Testament, Victor Schulze Apr 1937

The Concept Of God's Holiness According To The Old Testament, Victor Schulze

Bachelor of Divinity

For all practical purposes there are but two ways or thinking about God. The one is based upon Divine revelation, the other spun from the speculations of men. Unprejudiced thinkers may find God's creative activity revealed in the works of nature, His righteousness in the moral law engraved into the heart of every mortal. And, finally, God is revealed in Scripture as possessing both personality and attributes.

Die Selbstbezeichnung Jesu Der Menschensehn, Werner Wadewitz Apr 1937

Die Selbstbezeichnung Jesu Der Menschensehn, Werner Wadewitz

Bachelor of Divinity

Suggested Thoughts On The Question: Can We Escape Both Traditionalism And Liberalism, O. A. Geiseman

Concordia Theological Monthly

History reveals that the visible Church of God has periodically tended to decline and degenerate. Think how true that is of the period from Adam to Noah; Noah to Abraham; Abraham to Moses; Moses to Elijah; Elijah to the Captivity; Ezra to Christ; Apostolic Age to the Reformation; Reformation to our own day.

New Revisons Of Comparative Religion, Th. Graebner Sep 1936

New Revisons Of Comparative Religion, Th. Graebner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The three stages of down-town metropolitan real estate: the brick store, the steel and concrete sky-scraper, the parking lot, fitly describe the history of the comparative study of religion. The foundation was laid in philology when Max Mueller together with many a less brilliant, but more profound student of language developed the imposing structure of the science of religion on the basis of etymological study. The structure was laid low less than fifty years later, and on its place was erected the colossal pile of the anthropological study of religion, based on the evolutionary theory. The reconstruction of Old Testament …

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder Jun 1936

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Dialecticism, a branch of Calvinism, vitiates the chief article of the Christian religion, the doctrine of justification by faith. It does injure to the cor ecclsriae. The article of the grace of God in Christ, of justification by faith, gives the Church its life; in terms of dogmatics, it forms the material principle of Christion theology. Calvinism, however, makes "the dogma of God's eternal election the cor ecclsriae, the heart of the Church." Furthermore, by taking the heart out of the means of grace in denying that they confer the forgiveness of sins, it renders justification by faith chimerical. And, …

An Investigation Of Molech And Recent Theories Concerning The Term, Herbert C. Albrecht May 1936

An Investigation Of Molech And Recent Theories Concerning The Term, Herbert C. Albrecht

Bachelor of Divinity

The influence of mechanistic, materialistic science, through Evolutionism, has in recent centuries shaped men's theories regarding the origin and development of the religions of mankind. Since the universe was conceived to be the direct result of vast eras of development by a simple process of cause and effect, it had to follow that religion was also an outgrowth of the same lines of cause and effect. Deistic speculation, indeed, made God the primal cause of this development, insofar as he set the universe in motion, leaving it to evolve in its own way, but Deism thought of religion as being …

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder

The formal principle of the dialectical theology is not that of the Reformation. What about its material principle? The material principle of Lutheran theology is the doctrine of justification through faith, salvation by grace.
