Long Or Short Sermon Texts?, John H. Fritz
Long Or Short Sermon Texts?, John H. Fritz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Taking it for granted that the sermon should be based on a certain text, the question arises, Shall it be a long or a short text? By a long text we do not necessarily mean a text of ten to twenty or more verses. The pericope for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany, Rom. 18, 8-10, although containing only three verses, is not a short text. And speaking of a short text, we do not mean a brief saying of Scripture which is torn out of its context and given a meaning different from that which it originally had, nor a …

The No And The Yes Of Scripture On Atheism, W. H. Dau
The No And The Yes Of Scripture On Atheism, W. H. Dau
Concordia Theological Monthly
The question to be investigated now is whether Scripture regards atheism as possible; whether atheism is viewed by the Biblical writers as a reality or merely a state of mind and a matter of imagination.

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Freidrich
Concordia Theological Monthly
Among the eighty brethren who replied to the questionnaire submitted in the lost issue of this journal sixty-five went on record as being deeply concerned about the preaching that is being done in our Synod at the present time. They claim to have observed certain definite symptoms which must be regarded either as positive evidences of decline or as a handwriting on the wall warning us that a decline is bound to come unless we give more attention to the preparation and the delivery of our sermons. The following paragraphs present a number of the most interesting statements received on …

The Ministry Of The Word In These Trying Times, K. Kretzschmar
Concordia Theological Monthly
Periods of adversity in the life of the Church and the world always involve a special challenge to the ministry of the Word. The present era of spiritual, social, and economic distress is no exception. Within the memory of the generation now living there has never been a general situation demanding more earnest attention, single-hearted concentration, and enlightened action on the part of God's ambassadors on earth than that created by the developments of these trying times.

Atheistic Diagnoses Of The Coming Age, W. H. Dau

There is on undefined fear working on the minds of good Christian people throughout the world in our day. The North American Republic has achieved notable success in a political way and has unquestionably decided the fortunes of the great World War. It has become a dominant factor in the world of industry, commerce, and finance. It is no longer a quasi-hermit nation on the Western Continent, separated by two great oceans from the rest of the world. but is to-day n world-power of the first magnitude, perhaps the determinant world-power, and her doings are warily watched, her counsel eagerly …

Handbooks for Bible classes that througl1out discredit the Bible have not been a rare offering of the publishers' tables of recent years. But here is a text-book for religious study classes which not only cuts doubt upon the veracity of Bible accounts, but which in detail is designed to eliminate the doctrine of Christianity from the consciousness of the new generation. And it is "approved by the Committee on Curriculum of the Board of Education of the Methodist Episcopal Church.''

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Friedrich
Concordia Theological Monthly
Christian preaching never continues very long on the some plane. On the contrary, it is subject to a continual alternation of revival and decline, and that not merely with reference to its literary and homiletical qualities, but above all in the substance, the power, and the effectiveness of its message. There is nothing extraordinary about this; for "human progress of every kind is usually not steady and continuous, but rather goes by waves, like the rising tide. Declension and revival, forward and backward, up and down, these are the common Christian phenomena, individual, local, general. Even the most superficial study …

Outlines For Sermons On The 450th Anniversary Of Luther's Birthday, J. H. Fritz, Theo Laetsch
Concordia Theological Monthly
The celebration of the Festival of the Reformation in our Lutheran churches is self-evidently linked up with the name of Martin Luther; for he was the instrument in the hand of God of restoring to His Church the Word of God in it-s full truth and purity. This year we are reminded that on the 10th of November it has been 450 years since Luther, that great man of God, was born. What makes Luther an outstanding man in the history of the Church and of the world at large is what God made of Luther and what God did …

Biblical Ethics Concerning Young People, P. E. Kretzmann
Biblical Ethics Concerning Young People, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Every age has its iconoclasts, and youth is ever the age of iconoclastic tendencies. But when factors of history and the economic conditions of a country combine to make such tendencies unusually prominent, the combination may prove extremely dangerous, if not disastrous to traditional ethical concepts. If the opinions of prominent educators, economists, and sociologists count for anything at all in this postwar period and in these days of economic depression, we are obliged to look upon our present age and generation as one which has been caught in a double flood-wave of iconoclastic tendencies and endeavors, on which account …

Does 2 Cor. 5, 19: "God ,was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them," treat of the objective justification or of the subjective justification or of both? We insist that these statements refer to the objective justification exclusively.
