A Plain Account Of Christian Purity: Berlin Walls, Dean G. Blevins, Marie Gregg Jan 2024

A Plain Account Of Christian Purity: Berlin Walls, Dean G. Blevins, Marie Gregg

The Asbury Journal

While theological definitions of holiness incorporate purity terminology among several metaphors, the challenges resident in using this language may well impede opportunities of engaging difference and reconciliation. Wesleyans need a “Plain Account” of Christian purity to guide both ecclesial discussions that stress not only strengths, but also limits, in purity thinking. Using an example involving the Church of the Nazarene and Pentecostalism, the writing reveals how purity thinking risks creating “Berlin walls” when engaging differences. The analysis argues that a moral fear of degradation, rather than an acknowledgment of difference, often pushes purity thinkers to oppose certain issues.

“Chieftain, Farewell”: Bishop Matthew Simpson’S Funeral Address To Abraham Lincoln, Samuel J. Rogal Jan 2024

“Chieftain, Farewell”: Bishop Matthew Simpson’S Funeral Address To Abraham Lincoln, Samuel J. Rogal

The Asbury Journal

This article reflects back on the historic oration by Methodist Bishop Matthew Simpson at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois in 1865. Matthew Simpson was one of the most prominent orators of his day and had built up political connections during the Lincoln Presidency. Bishop Simpson in many ways represents the rising respectability of Methodism in the United States as its influence grew and Methodism became more acceptable among society and in political circles. Simpson even represents a form of Christian nationalism which emerges from his funeral address and the way he portrays the “martyred” president.

“Exiles, Aliens, And Strangers”: Reading And Living In The Company Of The Global Church, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

“Exiles, Aliens, And Strangers”: Reading And Living In The Company Of The Global Church, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

The use of “exile, alien, and stranger” language by New Testament writers in their descriptions of the church provides important insights into the appropriate self-understanding (identity) and the ultimate allegiance of Jesus’ followers. The lived experience of North Atlantic believers can make it hard to hear and internalize this apostolic language for the church; reading in the company of Majority World Christians can open up the possibility of deeper understanding and embodiment of these realities.

“Exiliados, Extranjeros Y Extraños”: Leyendo Y Viviendo En Compañía De La Iglesia Global, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

An Approach To The History Of Missions In The Church Of The Nazarene In Cuba, Mirelys Correoso Calzadilla Jan 2024

An Approach To The History Of Missions In The Church Of The Nazarene In Cuba, Mirelys Correoso Calzadilla

The Asbury Journal

The history of a church is impossible to tell if the chronicles of its missions are ignored. It is the latter that give it life and continuity. This article aims to present a brief historical review of the development of the missions in the Church of the Nazarene in Cuba. We begin with Miss Leona Gardner, a North American missionary, who arrived on the island in 1902. She preached the gospel in the area of Casilda, Trinidad, in the former province of Santi Espíritus, for 25 years. The merit lies in the fact that although she did not manage to …

Un Acercamiento, A La Historia De Las Misiones, De La Iglesia Del Nazareno En Cuba, Mirelys Correoso Calzadilla

The Asbury Journal

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

Mark’s use of sighing/groaning language ([ἀνα-]στενάζω) in 7:34 and 8:12, when set alongside the LXX and other NT use of the terms, provides a powerful glimpse of the mystery of the Incarnation, as the Son of Man groans in solidarity with humanity and creation and the Son of God groans in concert with the Father and the Spirit in the eschatological work of liberation, healing, and restoration.

El Gemir De Dios: Los Suspiros De Jesús En Marcos 7:34 Y 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

El Gemir De Dios: Los Suspiros De Jesús En Marcos 7:34 Y 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

Strength In The Midst Of Loneliness: An Ecuadorian Christian Woman’S Experience Of Widowhood, Elis Damarys Carrión Flores, Christian Bermeo Valencia Jan 2024

Strength In The Midst Of Loneliness: An Ecuadorian Christian Woman’S Experience Of Widowhood, Elis Damarys Carrión Flores, Christian Bermeo Valencia

The Asbury Journal

In Ecuador, most cases of widowhood correspond to women, many of these believers. Although I cannot prove that this is certain in all cases, my experience has shown me that many widows feel alone and unprotected at some point in their life. This article reflects on the biblical affirmation that God is close to the afflicted and the weary to strengthen them (Ps. 34:18; 73:26), and focuses on the feeling of loneliness that accompanies widowhood, doing this in light of the Word of God and my own personal experience. The essay has four parts. In the first two, we contextualize …

Fortaleza En Medio De La Soledad. Experiencia De La Viudez De Una Mujer Cristiana Del Ecuador, Elis Damarys Carrión Flores, Christian Bermeo Valencia

The Asbury Journal

Santidad Y Misiones Pentecostales En El Salvador: El Ejemplo De Federico Ernesto Mebius, Robert A. Danielson Jan 2024

Santidad Y Misiones Pentecostales En El Salvador: El Ejemplo De Federico Ernesto Mebius, Robert A. Danielson

The Asbury Journal

Is There A Future For The Missiological Study Of Worldview? Part 1, Paulo C. Oliveira Jan 2024

Is There A Future For The Missiological Study Of Worldview? Part 1, Paulo C. Oliveira

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

This two-part article aims to assess the missiological worldview theory critically while pointing to implications for mission studies. It argues that the concept needs serious development to be useful for research in contemporary society. The social shifts experienced in the last decades and a lack of robust missiological critical engagement have made the model theoretically unreliable as an analytical tool. This first paper introduces the genealogy of missiological worldview theory to expose its theoretical underpinnings and identifies a departure between anthropology and missiology regarding the concept. The first task in the ensuing discussion is to unearth the theoretical foundations of …
