The Phonology And Syntax Of Grammatical Tone In Copala Triqui, Jamillah Shantel Rodriguez

Copala Triqui is an Otomanguean language of Oaxaca, Mexico with a highly complex tone system. In Copala Triqui, the lowering of tone from an upper register tone to a lower register tone acts as a conveyor of grammatical information. Tone lowering occurs across many syntactic environments in the language (Hollenbach, 1984; Broadwell; 2011; Broadwell, 2016; Broadwell & Clemens, 2017; Rodriguez & Clemens, 2020). In this thesis, I consider two aspects of tone lowering: i) the representation of tone lowering in the phonology and ii) the syntactic trigger for tone lowering across multiple environments.

This study investigated the issue of L1 use in the L2 classroom from the students’ perspective. Specifically, the focus of this study was on the characteristics of learners who desired L1 classroom support in their L2 learning. For the purposes of the study, a convenience sample of 380 Japanese university-level EFL participants completed a series of questionnaires and an L2 proficiency test. After the data had been subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis, the results suggested that L2 proficiency could be the strongest predictor of desire for L1 support in the EFL classroom, followed by L2 ambiguity tolerance and L2 …

When learning high- and mid-frequency words, approximately 5,000 words might be inadequate for learners to survive in a career as a tourist guide. This paper aims to construct technical word lists for Thai tourist guides to serve as supplementary learning materials. Different word lists need different criteria for their construction. Three main methods are used to construct word lists: lexical profiling, eliminating off-list words, and expert verification. At this stage of the research, bibliotherapy was defined as the use of literature to support positive socio-emotional health and prosocial behavior. This dissertation describes a study that investigated the degree to which a Schoolwide Silent Reading Initiative (SSRI) impacted high-school students’ motivation, attitudes toward, and amount of time spent reading for pleasure both in and outside of school. Multiple methods were used to collect and analyze data, however the data collection window was drastically shortened and unexpectantly closed due to Covid-19. The researcher employed a stratified and multi-sampling technique to sample 1103 students. The questionnaire was the instrument utilised to gather data.
