This research examines the impact of paired folk tales and science explanations on students in third through sixth grades who viewed program modules from the SkyTeller Project of Lynn Moroney and the Lunar and Planetary Institute of Houston, Texas. The audience consisted of over 3500 students in eight locations in the United States. Because few quantitative studies have been conducted to examine the use of stories in science education, the development of an instrument to assess students' attitudes toward science and stories forms a major part of this research. This work began with the presupposition that asynchronous web-based interactions (and collaboration) can add a special dimension to learning. Both projects were carried out with Engineering students. In both instances, institutionalized discussion boards were created for online group interaction. Data for both projects were collected from student surveys and. postings on the discussion boards. Analysis of student surveys showed different responses to the use of discussion boards. Students in the first project viewed themselves as accountable for their own learning, whereas students in the second project had a negative perception of the online discussion platform. On English As An International Language, Saksit Saengboon

In this position paper, I argue that English as an International Language (EIL) is meant to elucidate the current practice of English teaching, and more importantly to broaden the scope of inquiry focusing on such issues as English language policy, teaching approaches and materials (e.g., use of non-native literature). Being context-sensitive and culture-specific, EIL tries to answer a local question as to what constitutes "standard" English, etc. In addition to a tentative model of EIL, I also provide a list of eminently researchable topics revolving around the notion of EIL.

Research has shown that collaborative learning has positive effects on students' attitudes toward both themselves and subjects studied. Working collaboratively can motivate students to learn and achieve common goals. The present study was classroom-based research which aimed to investigate students' attitudes toward group work and other activities in class. The subjects were 29 students who took the English Writing for Economics, a required course for second- year Faculty of Economics students at Chulalongkorn University. Learners' dictionaries are supposed to be user-friendly and comprehensive reference books for non-native learners. It is. therefore, generally expected that learners' dictionaries should not only present precise and easily comprehensible definitions but also provide morphological and syntactic information about individual words not deducible from general rules of grammar. This paper explores how renowned learners' dictionaries deal with this and how successfully they meet such expectations.

In this paper I first give the background and the context of the study, followed by the aim of the visit, focusing particularly on professional development. In addition to learning from the experiences of other teachers, I also see this as a good opportunity to gain some experiences necessary for carrying out action research I hope to subsequently pursue. Military historians are not usually accused of worrying about trendiness. More typically they seem like stodgy traditionalists, scoffing at postmodernism and its various spin-offs and fantasizing about putting Foucault in the path of a cannonball at Gettysburg and shouting, "Deconstruct this!" At academic conferences and in university departments, military historians are outsiders: stubbornly following tales of great battles and dead white males while their presumably more "relevant" colleagues don red berets and scribble manifestos in smoke-filled rooms. Although Hamlin Garland made his mark primarily as a writer of innovative realistic short stories in the 1890s, he also wrote some nineteen novels, almost none of which ever attained the critical acclaim of his first collection of short stories, Main-Travelled Roads, published in 1891. The single exception is Rose of Dutcher's Coolly, his fifth novel and tenth book, published four years later. Storytelling And Story Reading: A Comparison Of Effects On Children's Memory And Story Comprehension., Matthew P. Gallets

For years, storytellers have been going to schools to share stories with children. However, to date only limited research has been done on the effects of storytelling on children’s learning. This project was part of an ongoing study involving several researchers. In this portion of the project, the effects of storytelling and story reading were compared. The population studied consisted of kindergarten, first, and second grade students. Half the students were read stories aloud, the other half were told the same stories by a storyteller.
