Behind The Veil? Catharine Sedgwick And Anonymous Publication, Melissa J. Homestead
Behind The Veil? Catharine Sedgwick And Anonymous Publication, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The idea that women in past centuries withheld their names because they experienced their own authorship as shameful or scandalous has achieved the character of received wisdom. Ask a typical lower-level undergraduate what she knows about women's authorship in the United States during the years of Sedgwick's greatest productivity (the 1820s through the 1840s), and she will tell you: "It wasn't considered respectable for women to write back then, so they didn't give their names, or they took male pseudonyms." I argue instead that Sedgwick's anonymity was a market strategy for constructing an authorial persona rather than an absence of …
An Intervention Plan For "At Risk" Students, Bonnie Janine Chilton
An Intervention Plan For "At Risk" Students, Bonnie Janine Chilton
Theses Digitization Project
This project consists of two, two-week thematically planned language arts units containing all the components of a balanced literacy. It was created to teach second and third grade at risk students at Chester Morrison Elementary School, in Menifee, California during two weeks of their off track time. Both sessions have daily detailed plans for the teacher outlining all the components of a balanced literacy program. Both sessions contain relevent books that students make and take, shared reading to increase comprehension and skill building, and constant literacy opportunities.
Irlen Syndrome And The Reading Process, Jodi Beth Altman
Irlen Syndrome And The Reading Process, Jodi Beth Altman
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of the project was to determine if a school-wide intervention for students demonstrating symptons of Irlen Syndrome would result in improvements in reading skills and a reduction in physical symptoms that might impede visual processing necessary for successful reading.
Are Nursery Rhymes/Chants Helpful In Pre-Reading Skills For Kindergarteners And English As A Second Language Students?, Louise Jeanine Valencia
Are Nursery Rhymes/Chants Helpful In Pre-Reading Skills For Kindergarteners And English As A Second Language Students?, Louise Jeanine Valencia
Theses Digitization Project
This project will focus on a different method to teach pre-reading skills to kindergarten students and to ESL students. The strategy of using nursery rhymes as a tool for teaching pre-reading skills to kindergarteners and second language learners is an avenue to explore while addressing the different challenges facing a teacher. As an educator, we know that children learn through different modalities including auditory, kinesthetic and tactile.
Eighteenth-Century British Circulating Libraries And Cultural Book History, Edward Jacobs
Eighteenth-Century British Circulating Libraries And Cultural Book History, Edward Jacobs
English Faculty Publications
Circulating library catalogs offer one of the most revealing views available of book publishing and reading in eighteenth-century Britain, since those catalogs and the libraries they document were put together by book traders whose livelihood depended upon giving an unprecedentedly wide range of British readers the books they wanted. Of course, the perspective on eighteenth-century British book culture provided by their catalogs is nowhere near as comprehensive as the Eighteenth-Century Short Title Catalog (ESTC) or the recently published first volume of The English Novel 1770– 1829: A Bibliographical Survey of Prose Fiction Published in the British Isles (TEN), which “seeks …
A Guide To Motivating Students To Twist To Better Spelling, Kim Elaine Du Cloux
A Guide To Motivating Students To Twist To Better Spelling, Kim Elaine Du Cloux
Theses Digitization Project
Students learn and retain more when they enjoy the process or avenue of learning. Students have fun learning to spell when visual, auditory, and hands-on learning are included in the process. In addition, the intervention project can be used to support and assist second language learners. The benefits from this intervention project will not only strengthen students' phonemic and spelling foundation, but will also enhance their reading comprehension and writing effectiveness.

Chronological Bibliography Of The Works Of Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Lucinda L. Damon-Bach, Allison J. Roepsch, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This two-part bibliography has been built by consulting the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) and the bibliographies compiled by Sister Mary Michael Welsh ("Catharine Maria Sedgwick: Her Position in the Literature and Thought of Her Time up to 1860," Ph.D. diss., Catholic Universiry of America, 1937) and Richard Banus Gidez ("A Study of the Works of Catharine Maria Sedgwick," Ph.D. diss., Ohio State Universiry, 1958); library cataloging records; and the personal records of Lucinda Damon-Bach and Melissa J. Homestead. In most cases, entries have been confirmed through books, periodicals, photocopies, or microfilm received through interlibrary loan. We were not able …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. 91 There has been a decrease in the general budget of $377, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $59,706. This year's slight reduction is mitigated by the large increase from last year ($7,401), and that large overage partly explains the present showing. A portion of the money for last year's conference in Washington, D.C., was received before the fiscal year began, so those monies were reported for the year in which they were received rather than across two years. In the present single-page report the Washington conference looks to have a …
