The publication of these 346 letters over thirty years between Thomas Merton and his friend Robert Lax, who died in Olean, New York, three months before its publication, is timely, comprehensive, definitive, and a significant contribution to Merton studies. This is not light reading. Some of the correspondence is so encoded, privatized, and self-absorbed that the reader needs to compare the letters with the other works of the same period by these writers in order to make sense of things. The edition is scholarly, reliable, a solid addition to one's personal or university library, and highly recommended.

The last decade has seen a revival of interest in the teaching of grammar, though in a different form from 50 years ago. Regardless of the approach one adopts, it is important for teachers to try to gain a deeper insight into the 'interlanguage' grammars of their learners - i.e., the internalized linguistic systems, approximating the target language system but differing from it in various ways, which enable learners to generate the same kinds of sentences repeatedly, and which can account for the persistent errors that they make. Peer Assessment Of Oral Presentations: What These Two Cases Tell Us, Anil Pathak, Chan Soon Keng

This paper explores the use of peer assessments of oral presentations in teaching and evaluation. The experiment was conducted on undergraduate and graduate university students of communication courses. While the undergraduates were asked to evaluate their peers' oral presentations using a rather structured assessment sheet, the graduate students used a relatively open feedback sheet. A comparison was made between the peer ratings and teacher ratings. It was found that the graduate students differed significantly from the teachers' ratings and other peer ratings. The undergraduates, however, displayed a tendency towards uniformity and towards a broad agreement with the teacher ratings. The …

Out of the four skills of English, it would seem rather convincing to state that listening is the one that foreign students practise least. The why and wherefore is that most EFL instructors tend to pay more attention to linguistic competence, an approach which is reflected in the use of grammar-based materials. In addition, being trapped in the traditional approach of teaching English, instructors are more likely to concentrate on reading and writing rather than speaking and listening. In Search Of An Optimal Writing Feedback Strategy, Supanee Chinnawongs

Writing is a language skill most EFL students have problems with. This is due to several factors such as the inherent complexity of the skill itself, a lack of constant practice and inadequate or inappropriate corrective feedback. This paper reports on an exploratory study on writing feedback strategies in which a three-step procedure, that is peer comment, self-evaluation and teacher reformulation, is proposed. Results revealed a positive attitude in the students towards this collaborative feedback strategy. Students demonstrated their skills as critical readers and evaluators. Suggestions and implications are also discussed.

This study examined the use of peer feedback and teacher-student conferencing activities in an English writing class with adult learners. It surveyed the learners' attitudes toward and their expectations from these feedback types and documented potential problems of applying these feedback activities in an adult learning situation. The participants were 108 graduate students. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results revealed the following: 1) the conferencing and peer feedback activities were highly valued by the majority of the learners, 2) the learners had the same expectations from both feedback activities, and 3) some problems occurring from the …

This paper advocates the important role of English language teaching in preparing students to succeed in the era of globalization which can be accomplished through distance education via Inter- and Intranet Pedagogy. The following key elements in this approach of language teaching and learning are discussed: syliabus, materials, tasks and activities, testing and evaluation, and the roles of teachers and students. One of the great advantages of the web is that there's a bunch of free stuff-that's the truism, anyway. But free stuff comes from somewhere, and it is rarely, if ever, free to produce. I am interested in exploring some of the costs of digital work, using as an example The Walt Whitman Hypertext Archive, a project I co-direct with Ed Folsom Since 1995, many people, myself included, have described our site as free, yet a considerable amount of resources continue to go into its making. I want to explore that conundrum.

The dilemma of studying the Tapestry is twofold. In traditional editions of the textile, the discursive limits of the printed page require either a sacrifice of narrative fluidity for detailed resolution, or the converse. Put another way, in a printed edition, "readers" of the Tapestry either are given the document in gloriously detailed, high-resolution plates that fragment the textile's continuity, or are faced with small-scale reproductions that capture large narrative blocks but lack any comprehensive magnified detail. Additionally, since its rediscovery in the 1720s and like any complex and canonical narrative expression, the Tapestry has generated hundreds of scholarly books …

I am a curator, but some of my best friends are editors. I mostly edit myself. My collecting responsibilities cover roughly four thousand years of written history, so sometimes my focus is a little blurry. My own training harks back to the McKerrow-Greg-Bowers school of textual editing, but none of these three great editors prepared me for the challenge of handling thousands of papyri.

Robert Allen Rutland, professor emeritus at the University of Virginia and research professor of history at the University of Tulsa, died at his home in Tulsa on 30 December 2000 at the age of seventy-eight. He made original contributions in several fields-in early American politics, the Constitution, and documentary editing. As a mentor he inspired and encouraged his colleagues, particularly those who worked with him on the Papers of James Madison.

In 1799, Georgia made the earliest attempt of any state to obtain copies of its colonial records from Europe. The history of its subsequent efforts to obtain and publish this earliest documentation well represents the problems and attempted solutions made by the many other such projects in the two centuries that followed. After all of the efforts to make its colonial records accessible, the state still does not have . a complete and credible publication of these records, and this goal remains elusive.
