This article proposes "Self-Directed Learning through the Internet and Intranet Pedagogy" as a choice for language teachers to use to enhance students' language skills, cognitive and academic abilities, computer literacy and self-actualization needs. Before introducing the method, information about students' needs and wants as well as computer background needs to be assessed. A questionnaire on "the Use of Computer in Teaching and Learning English" as an informal classroom inventory is provided.

Twenty years ago, at the first annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in Princeton, New Jersey, Arthur Link stated that documentary editing is "the most important scholarly work being done in the United States, and, if well done, it will be the most enduring." Last year, the distinguished historian Edmund S. Morgan echoed Link when he wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the 154 volumes produced by the Founding Fathers editions "stand as the single most important achievement of American historical scholarship in this century."

An exploration of the nature of intercultural communication and the use of English in international business correspondence is the principal aim of this study. Different aspects of intercultural communication in a sample of business correspondence consisting of letters, faxes and telexes in English written by business communicators from varied cultural backgrounds are investigated. These aspects include the deviation of linguistic features and expressions, the rhetorical structure of moves and steps with their linguistic exponents, the exchange structure of interaction and negotiation strategies, the organisation of message or information, and theme and theme structure. The paper reports on an exploratory study of error treatment strategies used by NS and NNS ESL writing teachers at four Thai universities. In the study, the researcher investigated two important issues for ESL writing teachers: (a) how and to what extent they should tackle errors in students' work, and (b) how they can make their error treatment strategies sufficient to facilitate students' self-correction while not disparaging the latter with heavy marking or editing. The word 'cheewajit' is unfamiliar to many English language speaking people. As an ESL professor, a number of foreigners, as well as native speakers have asked me what this word means. Cheewajit has become a phenomenon such that one cannot be certain if cheewajit is a fad or faith. Hence, this paper will discuss some of the terminology used in the cheewajit philosophy to help clarify both to foreigners and Thais who would like a clearer understanding of these lexical items. Then they can decide for themselves if cheewajit is a fad or faith.

There is an on-going concern among researchers and educators in both the ESL and EFL programs regarding how to balance a focus on form or linguistic properties with a focus on meaning or communication in the target language. A focus on form and a focus on meaning are not a dichotomy. Instead, based on a review of existing research literature and teaching experience, what seems to work best is an integrated teaching approach in which the development of language learners' grammatical knowledge and communicative competence are equally supported.

My title is somewhat facetious, but not completely. There has been a profound shift in the direction and underlying assumptions of editorial theory and practice during the thirty years in which I have been practicing this craft, and my purpose here is to make some general observations on this topic. I start with a warning, though: most of my comments apply to textual or literary editing, not to documentary editing as it is practiced by literary editors.

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is now accepting applications from individuals for its Documentary Editing Fellowships, which provide training in historical documentary editing at projects supported by the Commission. Contingent upon the availability of sufficient Fiscal Year 1999 funds, two fellowships will be awarded for the 1999-2000 academic year. The stipend for an editing fellow is $41,250 (includes fringe benefits). Fellowships are for an eleven-month period beginning between August and October 1999. The University of Washington (UW) Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP) provides five-credit expository writing courses each of which is linked to a discipline-based lecture course. Students enroll in both the writing and discipline-based courses, and complementary assignments allow them to improve their writing skills within a subject area of their own particular interest. In Winter and Spring of 1998, the UW UWired program sponsored a pilot program adding librarian-taught class sessions to existing IWP courses. The "Journal of Archibald Clark" proved to be the papers of Robert R. Henry. They document Henry's 1820s political crusade in Georgia, New York, and Washington to replace Clark as the port master at St. Marys, Georgia. Henry meticulously recorded his thoughts and actions in what he eventually left as a memoir to his descendants. He even saw ammunition for his causes in documents critical of his efforts, which he copied without obvious prejudice. These papers provide an extremely rare documented case study of political activism of the period.

Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill and editor of his papers since 1968, has added another volume to his extraordinary documentation of the British statesman's life and career. In the mid-1990s, this historian at Merton College, Oxford, was knighted for completing the official biography, which was started by Churchill's son in the early 1960s. When Randolph Churchill died, the holder of the copyright asked Gilbert, then one of Randolph's research assistants, to continue the official biography along the lines that had already been established by the family and the British and U.S. publishers.
