PASAA
This study investigated the perceived English-language academic writing challenges encountered by Thai EFL undergraduate engineering students and the strategies they employed to overcome these challenges. The data were collected from third-year Thai EFL undergraduate engineering students through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview adapted from Hyland (2016) and Lin and Morrison (2021). The results revealed that vocabulary, grammar, and structure were the most challenging aspects at the sentence level for students. At the paragraph level, they considered summarizing and paraphrasing academic sources and producing a coherent argument the most challenging aspects when writing academic texts in English. Feedback from instructors …

Fluency development is one of the prominent components of a well-balanced language course. In particular, speaking fluency interests second language (L2) researchers who have continuously tried to look for the finest approach for helping L2 learners attain a certain level of fluency to achieve effective communication. To this end, the primary purpose of this research is to explore what factors affect English-speaking fluency and what strategies can effectively boost its development among a cohort of Vietnamese university students. The participants were 142 English majors who filled out a questionnaire measuring their perceived self-efficacy concerning English-speaking fluency. Four teachers and six …

Trying To Be Funny: A Conversation Analysis Of Humor In Efl University Students’ Role-Plays, Siriprapa Srithep, Patharaorn Patharakorn

Through the lens of conversational analysis (CA), humor or funniness is not an inherent property of a message, nor an internal state of any social action, but as something interactionally achieved (Glenn, 2003). Teachers are often encouraged to utilize humor to reduce anxiety, lower affective filters, and make language more “memorable” (Bell, 2005; Tarone, 2000; Ziyaeemehr et al., 2011). In the current research endeavor, we focused on an activity called “Drama and Creativity,” an extracurricular activity which is offered to firstyear undergraduate students at a public university in Thailand. During the activity, students worked in groups of three to four …

Analyzing Self-Praise Strategies In Political Resignation Speeches Of Female Heads Of The Government From Australia, England, New Zealand, And Scotland: A Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Umparin Boonsinsuk, Pattrawut Charoenroop

While males have predominantly held leadership positions in national-level parliaments, the rising visibility of females as heads of government, despite their underrepresentation, is a significant trend. This study investigated the political resignation speeches of four female leaders in national parliaments: Australia, England, New Zealand, and Scotland. Examining their speeches revealed a strategic utilization of self-praise to construct their identity as effective leaders. A comparative analysis of these speeches highlighted distinct self-praise strategies employed. These speakers interacted with varied levels of familiarity with their audience influencing their self-praise strategies. Addressing familiar individuals prompted the use of diverse strategies, notably emphasizing direct …

Lexical Level In English Major Efl Students’ Writing: A Learner Corpus Study, Pong-Ampai Kongcharoen, Jiraporn Dhanarattigann, Tirote Thongnuan
PASAA
This study aimed to investigate the lexical competence of English-major EFL students. The learner corpus comprised 552 pieces of writing by sophomore English majors during five academic years between 2017 and 2021, containing 190,506 words in total. The results from VocabProfile program showed that these students used words contained in the academic word list (AWL) at lower rates than what has been suggested by experts. This is probably because they were in their second year studying their first writing course. With less exposure to higherlevel English, they might not have developed an advanced vocabulary repertoire. However, when considering the AWL …

Effects Of Data-Driven Learning On Writing Complexity, Accuracy, And Fluency (Caf) Of Thai Efl Learners, Punyapa Boontam, Supakorn Phoocharoensil
PASAA
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of data-driven learning (DDL) in L2 writing instruction. This paper examined whether and to what extent DDL activities could enhance the writing complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) of 30 Thai EFL learners. The presentation of DDL in this study was hands-on concordancing with the assistance of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The study was held in the context of an English writing workshop focusing on opinion paragraphs, divided into two phases: four weeks for the patternhunting activities and two weeks for the pattern-refining activities. Applying the CAF …
The Role Of Morphological Awareness And Background Knowledge In Turkish Efl Learners’ Writing Ability, Peri Aslan
The Role Of Morphological Awareness And Background Knowledge In Turkish Efl Learners’ Writing Ability, Peri Aslan
PASAA
Morphological awareness is the metalinguistic realization that words consist of meaningful roots and affixes that can be isolated and manipulated. Learners at different proficiency levels use various forms of background knowledge such as cultural knowledge, technical knowledge, religious knowledge, vocabulary knowledge, and contextual visuals. The purpose of this research was to see whether morphological awareness and background knowledge affected the fluency and accuracy of Turkish EFL learners. The participants consisted of 80 Turkish EFL students. At first, participants were homogenized to select samples and eliminate outliers, then a pretest was used to assess participants’ writing fluency and accuracy prior to …

The Development Of A Full Online Flipped Classroom Instructional Model For Enhancement Of Engineering Students’ English Meeting Skills And Learning Engagement, Piyatida Changpueng, Fasawang Pattanapichet
PASAA
The flipped classroom instructional approach gained popularity after the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly disrupted language instruction. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a full online flipped classroom instructional model to enhance students’ meeting skills and their engagement. The model consisted of two lessons: group meeting skills and writing the minutes of meetings. The participants comprised 48 third-year undergraduate engineering students from a public university in Thailand. The study utilized the KW#4 principle to compare average scores of passing students in formative and summative assessments, and to analyze pre-test and post-test scores, aiming to evaluate the model's impact on …

The Effects Of Flipped Learning Integrated With Role-Play On Efl Business English Undergraduates’ Oral Communication Performance, Pallapa Lertcharoenwanich, Kittitouch Soontornwipast

English oral communication becomes essential, especially for business English students since their future careers require a good command of English. The purposes of this study were to determine if the integration of flipped learning and three types of role-plays (i.e., scripted, semi-scripted, and non-scripted) could enhance English oral communication performance of business English students and to investigate the students’ perceptions towards the approach. This quasi-experimental mixed-methods research with a two-group pre-test-post-test design was conducted with 68 fourth-year business English undergraduates at a public university in Thailand. The participants were divided into a control group (n = 38) and an experimental …

Integrating Reflective Practice Into Undergraduate Teacher Education Programmes In Elt: A No-Lose Deal For Thai University, Andrzej Cirocki, Pariwat Imsa-Ard

The concept of reflection is probably as old as educational discourse itself. It is an inextricable element of teaching and learning that enables teachers to identify and solve problems related to their teaching practice or learn more about various aspects of their profession. Therefore, to fully prepare reflective language practitioners, it is essential for reflection to be embedded in teacher education programmes in English Language Teaching (ELT). With this in mind, the current contribution begins by operationalising the concept of reflective practice and describing reflective practitioners. It then presents models of reflective teaching, synthesises previous research on reflective practice, and …
