Studentsʼ Perspective On The Importance Of Efl Teachersʼ Tpack (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) And Xk (Contextual Knowledge) For Learning English During The Pandemic, Imelda Gozali, Bambang Yudi Cahyono
PASAA
To date, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) seems to be the most widely-used framework for informing teachersʼ interplay of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge. Mishra (2019) formally included Contextual Knowledge (XK), which has subsequently been conceptualized by scholars as Knowledge of Teachers and Knowledge of Students. While numerous research has been devoted to teachersʼ TPACK competence, scant attention has been given to which of the seven known TPACK subdomains (TK, PK, CK, TPK, TCK, PCK, and TPACK) are more important for students when it comes to learning a particular subject. Besides, insight into the nature of XK, more specifically Knowledge …

MasterʼS Thesis Defense Presentation Slides In Applied Linguistics: Move Analysis Of The Introduction By Chinese Students, Mei He, Issra Pramoolsook
PASAA
Thesis defense presentation slides (TDPS) are a significant and unique genre in the final ritual of master’s students’ learning journey. However, few studies have explored this genre, especially its rhetorical structure, so students have scant knowledge of it. This study investigates the moves and steps of this genre focusing on their Introduction section. A move analysis was conducted of 20 TDPS introductions produced by Chinese master’s students in Applied Linguistics. Adopting Chen and Kuo’s (2012) framework, interviews with the TDPS authors were then conducted. This study confirms that the framework for M.A. theses, i.e., the source genre of TDPS, is …

A Systemic Review Of Thai-Accented English Phonology, Jirada Suntornsawet
A Systemic Review Of Thai-Accented English Phonology, Jirada Suntornsawet
PASAA
The expansion of the English language produced by non-native speakers has, in recent decades, been discussed by applied linguists from various theoretical perspectives. The discussion has highlighted evidence showing that the multiplicity and diversity of English uses have given rise to an acceleration in the rate of inter variety contacts where pronunciation, as it is claimed, is the principle factor in international intelligibility. Further, it has been demonstrated that difficulty in intelligibility increases with the typological distance between interlocutors’ first languages, referring to the distinct way that English pronunciation is strongly shaped by the phonetics of speakers’ first language. Consequently, …

Exploring And Analysis Of Student Engagement In English Writing Grammar Accuracy Based On Teacher Written Corrective Feedback, Thanakorn Santanatanon, Sumalee Chinoku
PASAA
Whether students benefit from written corrective feedback (WCF) may depend on their level of engagement with the feedback. To date, student engagement with written corrective feedback has been investigated qualitatively. However, the association between student engagement with feedback and learning outcomes that result from that engagement has not been thoroughly examined. Moreover, little attention has been paid to secondary students’ engagement with written corrective feedback because most studies have focused on university students. Therefore, this mixed-method experimental study was conducted to discern if there was an association between student engagement with feedback and English writing grammar accuracy and to explore …

English language education policy is deployed strategically as an instrument to address wider national policy objectives in most emerging nations. In universities, policy enactment at institutional and classroom levels hinges on the development of a qualified and skilled English teaching workforce. The continued dominance of linear discourses of the relation of learning and practice and reliance on individual teacher agency to achieve policy objectives, however, risk policy failure. This paper reports the ‘bottom-up’ enactments of teacher professional learning and development (PLD) policy using reflections of three Thai university English teachers who individually completed PLD in overseas English-dominant settings. We found …
