Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The first volume of the long-awaited Papers of James Monroe uses mostly ·1 newspaper accounts, supplemented with correspondence and a few memoirs, to record President Monroe's tour of the northern states in 1817, his short tour of the Chesapeake Bay region in 1818, and his tour of the southern and western states in 1819. According to the introduction, these tours were particularly important because they became political events that "allowed the president to take his ideas directly to the people" (xxvii) and thus contributed, somewhat contrary to Monroe's desire to unify the nation, to the emerging shift of American politics …

An Awakened Spirit: Review Of The Selected Papers Of Jane Addams: Volume 7, Preparing To Lead. Edited By Mary Lynn Mccree Bryan, Barbara Bair, And Maree De Angury., Kate Culkin

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The popular image of Jane Addams is "The Angel of Hull House," a -1 matronly woman selflessly devoting herself to helping the nation's immigrants. The Selected Papers of Jane Addams: Volume 7, Preparing to Lead, 7860-7887, edited by Mary Lynn McCree Bryan, Barbara Bair, and Maree de Angury, illuminates a more complex, and more interesting, woman behind the angelic image. The book, the first of several planned volumes, covers the early years of Addams's life, from her childhood through her graduation from the Rockford Female Seminary. Letters, diary entries, speeches, school essays, poetry, and debates illustrate Addams's intellectual and emotional …

Documentary Editing--Cumulative Index, Twenty-Fifth Anniversary 1979-2003

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The following cumulative index (Documentary Editing 25:4 [Winter 2003]) reflects theories and practices that have changed in the past couple of decades as represented in the annual indexes of the journal (1979-2003) and also the 10th anniversary cumulative index in the December issue of 1989. Major inconsistencies and omissions have been corrected in the current version; differences in indexing decisions remain.

Editing Bill Gates's E-Mail, Beth Luey

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Although there has been a great deal of discussion about preserving electronic documents, editors have given little thought to how these would be edited once preserved, and no one has yet proposed an edition of electronic correspondence. Many argue that "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof," but I think we need to get our collective head out of the sand and grapple with the relevant issues. Toward that end, I offer a plan for an edition of the e-mail of Bill Gates. It is, at the moment, purely hypothetical, but that could change at any moment.

Ade Treasurer's Report, Fiscal Year, September 1, 2002-August 31, 2003, Gary E. Moulton

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. 91 There has been a decrease in the general budget of $377, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $59,706. This year's slight reduction is mitigated by the large increase from last year ($7,401), and that large overage partly explains the present showing. A portion of the money for last year's conference in Washington, D.C., was received before the fiscal year began, so those monies were reported for the year in which they were received rather than across two years. In the present single-page report the Washington conference looks to have a …
