Out-Of- School Time Use In Pakistan: A Qualitative Study Featuring Youth's Voices, Salima Kerai, Marium Ibrahim, Tonje M. Molyneux, Uzma Hussain, Anne Gadermann, Rosemin Kassam, Almina Pardhan Dr., Eva Oberle

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The current study addresses the lack of out-of-school time (OST) research in low- and middle-income countries by exploring OST use in the context of Pakistan and incorporating youth's voices. Using a qualitative descriptive design with focus-group discussions, we conducted a study in three middle schools set in low- to middle-income neighborhoods in urban and rural areas of Karachi, Pakistan. We engaged 86 youth (50% girls; aged 10–15 years) that were purposefully selected from grade six (31.4%), seven (44.2%) and eight (24.4%) classrooms, balancing gender and locality. In each focus group, we asked participants to describe their afterschool activity routine on …

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

At a particularly critical moment in the novels, the central character, Elena Greco, a poor girl from Naples who rises to the position of a successful novelist, is told by her more politically radical friends that she is not doing enough, that “this, objectively, is not the moment for writing novels.” But then, when is? The current political climate in Italy is …

Language Was My Home: I Had It In My Mind - But Not On My Tongue (Grappling With Aphasia), Corinne Othenin-Girard Jul 2023

Language Was My Home: I Had It In My Mind - But Not On My Tongue (Grappling With Aphasia), Corinne Othenin-Girard

Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism

Language was my home. I had a prolonged aphasic speech and writing block. Felt as if I was in exile. I slowly fought my way back amongst the ‘language owners’. Because of my funny stroke-induced accent, people tend to treat me like a foreigner. I began to write lyrics and prose to improve my language ability and also to show ‘them’, as well as myself, that I can do it. And that I can say again: language is my home.
