Internationalization, Internalization, And Intersectionality Of Identity: A Critical Race Feminist Re-Images Curriculum, Theodorea Regina Berry

This poetry/paper article is a re-accounting, a poetic counterstory in curriculum, of the praxis of an African American female teacher-educator working against internalized notions of curriculum as standards by re-imagining curriculum through the lives of third grade students and her teacher education colleagues. Using critical race feminism (Berry, 2010; Berry & Mizelle, 2006; Wing, 2003) as her framework, the author will describe how she moves curriculum from internalized to connected, collective, and introspective. On April 24, 2013 Joel Franks spoke in the University Scholar Series hosted by Provost Ellen Junn at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. Dr. Joel Franks spoke about race, colonization, and baseball in the twentieth century. Dr. Franks teaches Asian American Studies and American Studies. He has done extensive research and writing in the area of Asian Pacific American sports. Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Racial minorities in the U.S. are often tormented by the tension between the corporeal and the ontological, with the former experienced as confining and the latter expansive. Such ambivalence often expresses itself in one's relationship with food. Here I propose to illustrate how Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytical theory on desire can assist us in understanding ethnicity as a bodily performance, which I venture to call an embodied ontology, applying this concept to Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner (2007).

Master's Projects

Traditional U.S. historical scholars, as a matter of practice, carelessly push the history of the Mexican American community to the fringes of the collective historical consciousness of this country by selecting the common stories that students of all races learn. This study examines the problem of insufficient and inadequate historical scholarship pertaining to people of Mexican ancestry of the United States. By providing a local history of Mexican Americans in the Sacramento Valley this project provides a challenge to the legacy of historical exclusion by documenting the contributions and experiences of the Mexican American World War II generation and provides …
