Transitioning From Gpa Requirements To Holistic Application Reviews, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D. Jan 2014

Transitioning From Gpa Requirements To Holistic Application Reviews, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

I struggle with fraternities and sororities denying membership solely or greatly based on grade point average. Minimum GPA requirements mean students who do not meet the standard are rejected without consideration. Do members of fraternities and sororities not want students who fall below the GPA minimum to become engaged, find a sense of belonging on college campuses, develop as leaders, persist toward graduation, increase their GPAs, or develop professionally? While I would argue every fraternity and sorority should consider alternatives to relying on GPA as the measure for membership, I particularly find it troubling for historically black fraternities to exclude …

Creating Knowledge

Dear Students, Faculty Colleagues and Friends, It is my great pleasure to introduce the seventh volume of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Creating Knowledge—our undergraduate student scholarship and research journal. First published in 2008, the journal is the outcome of an initiative to enhance and enrich the academic quality of the student experience within the college. Through this publication, the college seeks to encourage students to become actively engaged in creating scholarship and research and gives them a venue for the publication of their essays.

Beginning with the sixth volume of the journal, we instituted a major …

Lorna Simpson, By Joan Simon Et Al., Prestel: Munich, 2013 (Book Review), Vittorio Colaizzi Jan 2014

Lorna Simpson, By Joan Simon Et Al., Prestel: Munich, 2013 (Book Review), Vittorio Colaizzi

Art Faculty Publications

[First paragraph] The images and essays in this catalogue, which documents Lorna Simpson's (b. 1960) first museum exhibition in Europe,1 trace an increasing emphasis on the enigmatically personal at the expense of the linguistic, although her work remains concerned with the discursive behavior of images as they reveal assumptions about race and gender. Simpson, as the author and contributors show, activates looking by short-circuiting the possessive aspects of the gaze.

Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey, By Tevor Schoonmaker, Kristine Stiles, And Greg Tate. Nasher Museum Of Art, Duke University: Durham, 2013 (Book Review), Vittorio Colaizzi

Art Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph] The exhibition for which this book is the catalogue opened at the Nasher Museum at Duke University before travelling to Brooklyn, Miami, and Evanston, Illinois. The show and book feature Wangechi Mutu's (b. 1972) signature collages, in which she places imagery from fashion, porn, mechanics, and "ethnography" alongside drawn and painted elements in order to deconstruct colonialist fantasies of the black female body as a site of exotic sexuality. By juxtaposing accepted signs for nature versus technology (tall grass and motorcycle parts, for example) and performing in her videos the ritualized actions of eating, cleaning, and destruction (most …

An Introduction To African-Centered Sociology: Worldview, Methodology And Social Theory, Karanja Keita Carroll Jan 2014

An Introduction To African-Centered Sociology: Worldview, Methodology And Social Theory, Karanja Keita Carroll

Publications and Research

Current advances in Africana (Black) Studies utilize an African-centered conceptual framework in the study of Africana life, history, and culture. This conceptual framework has been utilized and expanded on by those developing scholarship in the sub-discipline areas of Africana Studies, including African-centered psychology, history, and literature. However, to date the articulation of an African-centered sociology, grounded in an African-centered conceptual framework, has not developed; neither has it occurred for African-centered sociology as a sub-discipline of Africana Studies, a sub-discipline of traditional sociology, or as a stand-alone discipline, itself. After a review of the worldview concept and framework and an analysis …

Typologies Of Black Male Sensitivity In R&B And Hip Hop, Cassandra Chaney, Krista D. Mincey Jan 2014

Typologies Of Black Male Sensitivity In R&B And Hip Hop, Cassandra Chaney, Krista D. Mincey

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

A qualitative content analysis was conducted on the lyrics of 79 R&B and Hip Hop songs from 1956-2013 to identify the ways that these Black male artists expressed sensitivity. The songs were determined by Billboard Chart Research Services, and Phenomenology provided the theoretical foundation on which the themes were identified. Qualitative analysis of the lyrics revealed Black male sensitivity in R&B and Hip Hop to be based on the following four typologies: (a) Private Sensitivity; (b) Partnered Sensitivity; (c) Perceptive Sensitivity; and (d) Public Sensitivity. Private Sensitivity occurred when the Black male is alone; feels lonely; disguises or hides his …

A Narrative Inquiry Of Successful Black Male College Students, Malou Chantal Harrison Jan 2014

A Narrative Inquiry Of Successful Black Male College Students, Malou Chantal Harrison

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite a growing enrollment of Black males in colleges and universities in the U.S., the nationwide college degree completion rate for Black males remains at disproportionately low numbers as compared to other ethnicities and to that of Black females. The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to evoke and promote the voices of successful Black male students and to understand their perspectives on factors that contributed to their college success. Findings from this research provide insight into college experiences and interventions that have positive implications for Black male college student success. Valencia's (2010) work on educational attainment served as …

Factors That Affect The Decision-Making Process Of African American Students, Marcella Genise Dial Jan 2014

Factors That Affect The Decision-Making Process Of African American Students, Marcella Genise Dial

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

There is only a 9 % representation of African American students on colleges campuses across the country compared to 72.9% of Caucasian students. There are many reasons that affect African American students' decisions to participate in higher education. Colleges across the country are making strides to recruit minority students. However, in order for colleges to increase their minority enrollment, particularly with African American students, they must understand the factors that affect African Americans students' decisions to participate in higher education. Personal, economic, academic, and social factors were examined to understand African American students' reasons for enrolling or not enrolling in …

Toward Christian-Identity Response Theory : Exploring Identity, Spirituality, And Response To Adversity Among African American Males Placed At Risk, Charity Hannah Garcia Jan 2014

Toward Christian-Identity Response Theory : Exploring Identity, Spirituality, And Response To Adversity Among African American Males Placed At Risk, Charity Hannah Garcia

Dissertations

Problem: A lack of research integrating spiritual development as a central component of human development does not reflect an understanding of the whole person across multiple contexts throughout the life span. Such a limited-capacity view of African American males disproportionately disadvantaged, both historically and currently, has been detrimental. A theoretical model for how a relational journey with Christ may offer insights that lead to transformative practice in various educational settings.

Method: Constructivist grounded theory was utilized throughout this research process. Thirty-four African American males in three age groups (13-17; 18-25; 26+) who were placed at risk during adolescence and connected …

Predictors Of Academic Success Among African American College Students, La Toya Bianca Smith Jan 2014

Predictors Of Academic Success Among African American College Students, La Toya Bianca Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

African American students are graduating from high school and enrolling in higher educational institutions at greater rates than in previous years (U.S. Department of Education, 2009). Yet, they have not achieved the same level of academic success as their racial counterparts (American Council on Education, 2010; Ross, 2012). Ultimately, this disparity has resulted in only 17.7% of the African American population 25 years of age and older having at least a Bachelor’s degree (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2012). Many researchers have employed comparative study designs to explore this disparity. Additionally, researchers commonly study academic success through the exploration of intrapsychic …

From The Pew To The Pulpit - African American Women's Struggle To Gain And Maintain Leadership Positions Within The Church, Charlotte B. Chinn Jan 2014

From The Pew To The Pulpit - African American Women's Struggle To Gain And Maintain Leadership Positions Within The Church, Charlotte B. Chinn

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

This thesis will explore how African-American women adopt a negotiated reading of the Bible and the church in order for reconciliation of their contradictory experiences as ministers. The personal stories of Black women preachers, who were interviewed for this project, will reveal how a negotiated reading allows them to reconcile the sexism within the structure and practices of the Black church with the significance of the church as a site of personal fulfillment and spiritual liberation. In order to explore how African American women adopted this negotiated reading of the Bible and the Church, this essay will examine the significance …

Humanistic Psychology In Selected Plays By Lorraine Hansberry: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Shaimaa M. Saeed

English Language and Literature

Psychoanalysis has long been a breakthrough in the field of literary criticism. This book celebrates the intermarriage between two fields: psychology and literature. It provides a thorough analysis of selected dramatic texts authored by the Afro-American playwright Lorraine Hansberry. Such analysis is achieved through employing the humanistic psychology theories of the leading humanistic psychologists: Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Rollo May to emphasize that features of humanistic psychology are detected in Hansberry's plays. The interdisciplinary nature of the book calls for psychology and literature readers who have a passion for deduction & induction and a desire to navigate through different …

Refocusing And Redefining Hip Hop: An Analysis Of Lecrae's Contribution To Hip Hop, Travis Harris Jan 2014

Refocusing And Redefining Hip Hop: An Analysis Of Lecrae's Contribution To Hip Hop, Travis Harris

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

Hip Hop scholarship has overlooked and separated emcees who publicly identify themselves as Christians who exist to make God famous. This deficiency contributes to an inadequate understanding of Hip Hop and places Hip Hop in a dangerous position of alienating ostracized voices. This paper aims to draw attention to these shortcomings by analyzing Lecrae's contribution to Hip Hop. Influenced by his worldview, Lecrae leads a socially conscious movement and helps to bridge the "sacred" and "secular" gap. Lecrae redirects Hip Hop back to its roots. I will examine Lecrae's lyrics, websites, social media and interviews. Interviews of Lecrae will come …

An Engineering Journey: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of African-American Engineers' Persistence, Kristy Somerville-Midgette

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This transcendental phenomenological research study examined the perspectives and lived experiences of African-American female engineers related to the factors that led to their persistence to enter, persist through, and remain in the field. The study was guided by four research questions: (a) How do K-12 experiences shape African-American female engineers' decisions to enter the STEM field? (b) What persistence factors motivated African-American female engineers to enter the engineering profession? (c) What are the factors that shape African-American female engineers' persistence to progress through postsecondary engineering programs? (d) How do professional experiences shape African-American female engineers' persistence in the field? Cognitive …
