Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The first appearance of photographs in class albums at Harvard University occurred in 1852, beginning a tradition that has continued to the present day. The albums include photographic portraits of the graduating college classes, faculty, and staff as well as views of the campus. The class photographers, including John Adams Whipple, James Wallace Black, and George Kendall Warren, created salted paper prints for the albums from 1852 until 1864. My photographs are almost always self-portraits, which has created a unique bond between me and the machine with which I will eventually make art. The camera becomes not just a tool, but a source to which I show myself completely with no inhibitions. In my work, my main concern is my physical appearance and its relationship to interior emotion (the outward vs. the inward). It is my hope that I communicate emotion through images of my body and, in turn, create a dialogue between me and my audience. This collection consists of thirty cabinet cards, mostly unidentified, of individuals taken by photographers in the Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri area. Subject matter is primarily portraits, but also includes a small number of group and couple photographs. Also included are two small photographs that are not cabinet cards, but date to the same time period

That the lives of saints constitute an unmediated appeal suggests both a call to imitate what cannot be imitated (thus can result in no mimesis of sameness) and a call to respond to the extremity of the saint's vulnerability; and I would suggest that the two calls turn out to be the same. Because the saint is radically open to the need of others, she is endlessly vulnerable to need herself (she will give everything, again and again); and because she is endlessly vulnerable to need herself, she is radically open to the need of others.

This album was created by Willett Douglas Kirkpatrick Bowling Green Businss University Class of 1951 and member of Pi Tau Nu fraternity. Some photos were removed prior to being donated to WKU. Half of the images are of a Sadie Hawkins day celebration. The rest are snapshots of Pi Tau Nu fraternity events. The album has been disassembled with the original order maintained.
