Many nonprofit organizations are founded with passion and energy, rather than with expertise. Meanwhile, theorists and researchers write about that sector with distance from the day-to-day practice. This article relies on the analogy of a bicycle wheel to understand the inter-workings of the nonprofit sector, as a whole. The analogy is understood and interpreted through the philosophical lens of Feminist Pragmatism and aims to begin a conversation among and between nonprofit researchers, practitioners, educators, and recipients of services. When all are in communion, the wheel functions perfectly.

Artist Statement

I began exploring manipulation and fabrication in the darkroom after a workshop in Alexander Diaz’s Introduction to Photography course. I have always had an affinity for nature, especially trees. I was especially moved by the barren trees seen during a cold North Florida winter. Growing up in Florida, I’m used to seeing the vast greenery brought by these trees, but there was just something about their emptiness during winter that really struck me. Nassau Hall Stair by photographer Elizabeth G.C. Menzies, was brought into the Buffalo State College’s Garman Art Conservation Department for examination and treatment. Conservation imaging was utilized during examination and documentation. Nassau Hall Stair was attached to a window mat which was found to be significant due to graphite and ink inscriptions. The photograph exhibited puncture-like damage and undulations while the window mat showed similar undulations and brown tidelines. Nassau Hall Stair was identified as a gelatin silver developed-out-paper (DOP) print with X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and went through a series of solvent and aqueous baths which reduced tape adhesive …
