El Padre Mío Y Su Familia Maldita, Ryan Ahlrich

In this essay, I interpret the experimental film El padre mío (1985) by Diamela Eltit and Loty. The film explores the symbolic father figure of Dictator Augusto Pinochet. Cinematic techniques are used to emphasize his changing role in Chilean society. I focus on the concept of “family”—that is, as a symbol of Chilean national identity—as it transitions through the chronology found within El padre mío. At first, the elimination of individualism within the Pinochet-headed “family” allows for a clear understanding of its nature and the inherent components of uniformity, conformity, structure, and censorship. Lumpérica: La Teatralización Del Estado, Janine Waranowicz

In the contemporary Chilean novel, Lumpérica, author Diamela Eltit makes a strong statement about the brutality of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile and the effects of this rule over the Chilean people and society. Within the text, Eltit cleverly disguises various components of the dictatorship into theatrical symbols in order to create a sense of theatricality about the “production” put on by the dictatorship. The imagery and symbolism show the interrogating nature of the dictatorship, as well as the physical and mental constraints placed upon the country’s citizens throughout this era.
