Presentation made on June 30, 2021 to UConn Library staff as part of a library strategic framework implementation working group final report. The overall aim of the project was to lead an interdisciplinary, cross-campus working group made up of faculty from the Anthropology Department, and staff from the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, Office of the State Archaeologist, and the UConn Library. More specifically, the project's goal was to run 10 - 20 stone artifacts from the State Museum's Caldwell Collection through a newly developed, highly refined 3D digitization workflow that would produce 3D assets for eventual online classroom …

In this project from our Introduction to Hispanic Literature class titled “Cartas a Héctor” (Letters to Hector), students wrote three essays following the example of the contemporary Colombian writer Héctor Abad Faciolince. His short compositions in the collection “Palabras sueltas,” cover a number of observations from daily life. From the morbid topic of euthanasia to the simple joys of a hug, Abad Faciolince tackles everyday themes in uncommon ways, shedding new light on once thought simple ideas.

When I wrote, “Decepción,” I was thinking about a friend of mine who unexpectedly stopped talking to me. I was very disheartened and was feeling as though this friendship had been a waste of my time. The plane in the essay refers to the sensation of excitement that happens when you first meet a person, you cannot wait to get to know them better. If, as you invest time and yourself in a relationship, you realize that it is a fruitless paradise, you wish you had never met the person. “Decepción,” or disappointment, is a state where expectations are lowered …

Because the Islamic faith prohibits the pictorial representation of the created world, calligraphy has long been an important art form among those who adhere to Islam. Islamic calligraphy then employs the Arabic script, which is comprised of twenty-eight letters, as well as a number of diacritical marks. This art form was originally conceived to preserve the Qur’an, the Muslim Holy book.

Islamic calligraphy has since evolved into eighteen different forms of writing. The most common styles are Kufic, Naskh, Riq’a, Thuluth, Persian, Taliq, and Nastaliq. Kufic is very angular, and is composed of squares and horizontal strokes. Naskh consists of …
