Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

This photo essay features the journey from the main highway, up a long bush track, to Australian environmental philosopher Val Plumwood's home in a clearing amongst dense, temperate rainforest, on the edge of a steep escarpment. The highway is the contact zone, where humans and other beings collide with one another. The intention of this photo essay is to draw attention to such contact zones, acting as conduits to our urban environments, and to ask us to acknowledge the shadow places along the way that make a different kind of contribution to our lives.

The promise of cognitive innovation as a collaborative project in the sciences, arts and humanities is that we can approach creativity as a bootstrapping cognitive process in which the energies that shape the poem are necessarily indistinguishable from those that shape the poet. For the purposes of this conference the exploration of the idea of cognitive innovation concerns an understanding of creativity that is not exclusively concerned with conscious human thought and action but also as intrinsic to our cognitive development. “The New Reflexivity” tracks two narrative styles of contemporary Hollywood production that have yet to be studied in tandem: the puzzle film and the found footage horror film. In early August 1999, near the end of what D.N. Rodowick refers to as “the summer of digital paranoia,” two films entered the wide-release U.S. theatrical marketplace and enjoyed surprisingly massive financial success, just as news of the “death of film” circulated widely. The members of the Czech avant-garde group Devětsil accorded great importance to photographic illustrations in the magazines they published throughout the 1920’s. Securing photographs from foreign contributors played a key role in the group’s strategy to develop and maintain an international network. This paper examines these photographic reproductions as traces of a transfer of formal and iconographic innovations in photography from abroad to Czechoslovakia.

This body of work is comprised of a series of portraits that the artist photographed during the summer of 2014.

For the project, he questioned each participant before shooting their portrait, asking them what their relationship is to the church and then asking them to describe their relationship with God.

Scorza’s interpretation of their answers to these questions and the conversations that followed informed how he needed to shoot their portrait. The resulting imagery, or portraits, is a visual representation of the inward self-reflection these individuals shared – a selfie.

The Steven Rappaport Collection, Brooklyn College

Finding Aids

Steven Rappaport lived right next to Brooklyn College on Bedford Avenue. His family moved to 2981 Bedford Avenue in 1944 when Steven was three years old and the family lived there until 1970. An avid photographer, Mr. Rappaport took photographs of the Brooklyn College campus from the windows of his family’s home.

This small collection contains material related to Brooklyn College and the development of the surrounding neighborhood. This includes negatives of campus buildings including Ingersoll, Roosevelt, and Boylan Halls. These photographs were taken by Mr. Rappaport from 1969 to 1970, mostly from his home at 2981 Bedford Ave. There …

This research sheds light on the complex artistry of Korean-born photographer Nikki S. Lee. Although Lee's work initially appears straightforward and casual, this essay explores how photographs in "The Hip Hop Project" and "The Tourist Project" actually reinforce and critique specific cultural stereotypes. In performing different ethnic and cultural identities for her photographs, Lee also investigates what it means to one's own identity to be labeled part of a specific community.

His car was shot at, their guesthouse was bombed, and later when they were threatened at gunpoint, they tried to make a new life in India. Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Photographer Edward Weston was famously able to capture unexpected beauty—no matter if his subject was fruit or human. This essay locates Weston's artistic vision within the modernist movement of the first half of the twentieth century and uses two well-known images to illustrate Weston's unique talent for transcending the boundaries between human and nonhuman, animate and inanimate, being and nonbeing in his desire to encourage the experience of introspection and contemplation in viewers.
