In a symphonic literary work such as Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain, the individual themes which interweave to produce the complex counterpoint of the whole unit can hardly be sufficiently treated in one essay. To avoid such confusion we shall, then, consider only the musical themes and references as they parallel the personality development of Hans Castorp. Through this chronological presentation of references we may observe the evolution of character in musical symbols carefully chosen to express the first simplicity and final complexity of the novel's central character.

A Comparison Of Milton's Treatment Of Death In "Death Of A Fair Infant" And "Marchioness Of Winchester", Barbara Sims

It is a tribute to Milton's genius to study his delicate line of demarcation between the treatment of death in "Marchioness of Winchester" and "Death of a Fair Infant." In the latter poem, Mi.lton imbues his work with a tone of comfort and hope-a tone which we do not find in the former poem. Of course, we must keep in mind the fact that in "Death of a Fair Infant," Milton was emotionally connected with the deceased, and would naturally inject his lines with a note of personal grief and sympathy for the bereaved. When Milton wrote his great sonnet, "On the Late Massacre in Piedmont," he had just been engaged in one of the most bitter Controversies in his life. In an anonymous pamphlet he had been attacked as a "monster, ugly, huge, bereft of sight," and he answered these charges in even more violent language. After this bitterness had passed, Milton brought forth the eloquent eighteenth sonnet, believed by many critics to be his greatest.

This series is a contemporary interpretation of post-mortem photography, depicting the relationship between the physical and metaphysical remnants of life. The scenes are absent of a resident, showing only what remains, while the fabric portraits represent the ethereal vestige, the intangible memory friends and family hold on to. The corresponding paper reviews my photographic journey and details my processes necessary to create this body of work. Death is not always an easy subject to confront; with this project, I ask viewers to examine their own mortality and accept death’s inevitability.

This book shows the creative process and final product of my Independent Study Project, conducted in Prague as part of a semester study abroad program. The project started with interviewing four Czech graphic designers who described places in Prague that are especially meaningful to them. After collecting and transcribing their stories related to their places of inspiration, I visited the locations myself and photographed the locations with sensitivity to the details the artists had emphasized as unique to their experience of the place.
