The photographer discusses the work in Exegesis, his Master of Fine Arts exhibition held at Slocumb Galleries, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee from October 29 through November 2, 2007. The exhibition consists of 19 large format color photographs representing and edited from a body of work that visually negotiates the photographer's home in East Tennessee.
The formulation of a web of influence is explored with a focus on artists who continue to pertain to Brown's work formally and conceptually. Included are photographers Eugene Atget, Walker Evans, William Eggleston, and Mike Smith as well as the artist Joseph …

This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen

This essay examines the benefits and disadvantages of using imagination as a method of historical research in the archive. Employing Jean-Paul Sartre's notion of “image-consciousness” in The Psychology of Imagination, imagination is defined and explored as a form of perception based upon temporal absence or suspension. This method is then discussed in relation to the exhibition “Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women” (2006), curated by the author with artist Isabelle Massu. The installation was assembled with the cooperation of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and traveled from Marseille (2005-06) to San Francisco (2007). The author …

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese

A number of policymakers have attributed America’s defeat in Vietnam, the first “television war,” to a collapse of public support caused by nightly news coverage of combat with associated iconic photographs and moving images. The assumptions underlying this opinion are that photographs and video footage of war have an inherent pacifistic bias, that the emotional impact of visual images can override reason, and that powerful images can drive or overturn foreign policy. This has led subsequent administrations to increase their control over the media’s coverage of war. During the Vietnam War, the press was relatively uncensored. As a response to …

The problem was funding. I wanted it but was denied it. And so my Honors Capstone Project Part III took the form of a senior show on sports photography. I endeavored to recreate the standard photography show by encorporating various media into one collaborative project.
Sports photography is usually to be the bottom of the food chain when it comes to field. It is just like sports in general are considered to be lower class, lower culture than theater and opera and ballet. Much of the document remained in the realm of words until the mid-19th century invention of photography. Raising Girls’ Self-Esteem: An Art Therapy Approach Using Photography, Alison Mcallister
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
American girls’ self-esteem plummets around age 12, negatively affecting various aspects of their lives. This group art therapy research study explored the effectiveness of the use of photography in raising girls’ self-esteem. The study included seven girls between the ages of 10 and 12 in their fifth grade year. The participants attended six group sessions over an 8 week period. The study utilized a mixed methods design and data collection came from the Coopersmith Self-Esteem inventory, taped interviews, and analysis of artwork. Comparison of Coopersmith pretest and posttest scores indicates that the majority of participants made gains in the total …
