Steel Samba:A Tale Of Four Bridges Connecting A City, Ruqayyah Jaami’ Mccallum

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Steel Samba is a photographic mosaic exploration of four lift bridges connecting the east and west sides of Joliet, Illinois. Using the artist influence of Claude Monet’s 1872 image Le Pont de bois (the wooden bridge), I have created digital images of these bridges from many different views. The purpose of this series is to focus on these bridges: their history; their beauty; and how they move in sync to raise for waterway traffic almost in a dance formation.

The research I have conducted for my French Major Senior Thesis is a culmination of my passion for and studies of both French language and culture and the history and practice of Visual Arts. I have examined, across the history of art, the representation of women, and concluded that until the 20^th century, these representations have been tools employed by the makers of history and those at the top of the patriarchal system, used to control women’s images and thus women themselves. Painted from the lost snapshot photograph collections of strangers, the Testimonial paintings represent both the mythical potential of earlier times and the maddening reality that no matter what details are revealed, they can only ever be ghosts of the glories and tragedies that preceded our own. In the search for their stories, for their truths, for their absent memories, everything and everyone that we could have known lies dormant. Female First year medical students celebrate Black History month on the osteopathic campus of NSU as the backdrop. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, I wanted to give this picture a strong perspective that would provide a solid foundation to the African American female students who would one day be future doctors of this country. I tried to contrast the man-made pillars on the left that appear to be steady but are temporary while on the right there is nature, often considered a female form, highlighted by branches of the tree; uncertain yet permanent.

This picture was taken on a medical mission trip to India in the winter of 2015. The steep hills of Saputara, Gujarat in the background represent the long and treacherous path to medical school. In the center, first year medical student, Rachel Salveson (pictured) is willing to accept these challenges with commitment reflected by her calm and steady posture.

This picture represents their commitment to a better future and my commitment to the people of the country of my birth as I continue my training.

This picture is also taken during the medical mission trip and first year medical student, Rachel Salveson and other aspiring ophthalmologists visit a school for the blind community in India. It represents a commitment made by future doctors to acquire the powerful knowledge of medical science, so that one day they can take care of the sick and most vulnerable.

In the outdated traditional view of women, spiders are associated with certain qualities and attributes. Beauty. Grace. Cunning. Homemakers. Skill with crafts. I tried to imagine these over-generalized features in another form that can be juxtaposed with this antiquated view. And I came up with the spider from the story of Arachne.

The thesis exhibition Stories of Otherness is an interactive installation created using dance, music, photography, video, ceramic figurative sculptures, and armatures of found objects to create a voyeuristic and physically participatory experience of situational art. Many artists from various art and literary genres influence my research and art, including Petah Coyne, Mona Hatoum, Pina Bausch, Mia Michaels, and Jeanette Winterson. The multi-faceted combination of art mediums and artists inspires me to create a mixed media, multi-dimensional installation for an immersive participant’s experience as a source for awareness, empathy, reflection, and ultimately as a “call to action” evoking change.
