A family of field mice, who live in a stone wall on an abandoned farm, have been gathering supplies for the winter. Frederick, however, has not lifted a finger. They accuse him of being lazy, but he claims he’s gathering things just as important as food- the sun’s rays, colors, and words. When winter comes, the food runs out, but Frederick’s unique supplies and poetic delivery sustain the mice.

In the story a young snail learns how to make his shell grow large and sprout cone-shaped domes in all colors. When the other snails move on to find more food, the snail with the biggest house in the world is left alone and finally fades away. This is the story of a chameleon who is sad that he does not have a color of his own. He changes color wherever he goes. He tries to remain one color by staying on a leaf – but the leaf changes color with the seasons. He meets another chameleon who suggests they travel together. So they were green together, and yellow together and violet together and lived happily ever after.

"Pierre Desproges was a French humorist, whose successful career took off in the late 70s and ended abruptly with his death from cancer in 1988 (he was 48). Cynical about life, his favorite themes involved the holocaust, racism, religion, death, small-town France, chauvinism, all treated in a quite light-hearted fashion. A stand-up comedian, radio host and fake TV journalist, Desproges would write pieces celebrated by both the people and the critics, prompting him also to write short stories and a book. The following translation is from Le doute m'habite, a series of writings collected by Christian Gonon."
