The Gladys Boen Scholarship is awarded “for the best short story, poem or collection of poems, or essay submitted by an undergraduate currently enrolled in the university.” The Creative Writing Scholarship Committee had this to say on Maren Schettler’s “The History of Hurry”: “With its fragmented form and its melding of criticism with the personal essay, Maren Schettler’s essay enacts the very principle defended in her essay’s argument: that we must slow down, resist the urge to hurry, and break free from the rule of clocks and calendars.”

This study aims to create a photopoetry e-book about the lived experiences of being a widowed elderly in the COVID-19 pandemic, and to also answer the primary question: “How can photopoetry be used to convey both social awareness and hope in showing the lived experiences of a Filipino widowed elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic?” To help the researchers achieve their objectives, they related it to theories such as Marxism which explained that because of the unjust system, the elderly are forced to live through inequality and prejudice, and the Ethics of Care theory's explanation of the selfless desire to help …

Honors Program Theses

Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …
