The process of producing a documentary film about the legacy of Emmet Gowin is much like the process, I imagine, of researching and discovering the biographical history of a prominent figure in art. Unlike most documentary films I have made, which largely focus on what is happening presently in the lives of the individuals I am documenting, the Emmet Gowin project has been one fueled by memories of the past. This body of work includes both black and white photographs and a film. In each work, I put my collaborators in an environment consisting of a simple black curtain, to neutralize the space, and a 2 foot by 2 foot glowing orb of light. I asked my subjects to interact with the glowing orb in any way they felt most comfortable. I adjusted my collaborators only to keep them from leaving the frame of my camera. The positions and movements these people produced are both intimate and authentic to themselves. As such, each experience with the orb, captured on film, …

Parallaxis first began with an observation in my hometown. At nighttime, like a moth attracted to a flame, I would notice empty buildings that were closed or never opened for various reasons and relate them to my own inner vacancy. Seeing the lights on in these empty places motivated my curiosity and kept me studiously coming back.

I continued my exploration of empty buildings in Utah. Taking note of how capturing reflections transformed my images from documentary photography to internal forms of expression. It was at this time that reflections became the driving force within my image making. I became …
