An Alternative Visual Narrative: Latoya Ruby Frazier's The Notion Of Family, Madison Schultz

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

LaToya Ruby Frazier’s body of photographic work titled The Notion of Family (2003-2014) explores the toll the steel industry in Braddock, Pennsylvania, took on the black community there. The history of black Braddock is riddled with social, political, racial, economic and environmental hardship spurred on by the steel industry. Frazier intimately chronicles the lives of three generations of women—herself, her mother, and her grandmother—and their place in that history. The alternative visual narrative that Frazier creates commands viewers’ attention in telling a story that has been largely ignored by the American public. This dissertation examines the evolution of photography in France between the two World Wars by analyzing the seminal graphic art magazine Arts et métiers graphiques (1927-1939). This bi-monthly periodical was founded by Charles Peignot (1897-1983), the artistic director of the largest manufacturer of typefaces in interwar France, Deberny et Peignot. Arts et métiers graphiques has been recognized in previous literature as one of the principal vehicles for the modernization of photography in France, primarily because it functioned as an essential conduit for the radical practices developed outside the country. Artist Bio Born in 1975 in Phnom-Penh, KAI-DUC LUONG fled the oppressive Khmer Rouge regime from Cambodia to Vietnam to France, where his family settled in Paris, in 1978. KAI-DUC operates between Chicago and Paris. His artistic projects include video (art / doc / film), photography, and mixed media installations. Kelvin Burzon is a Filipino-American artist whose work explores intersections of sexuality, race, gender and religion. He was born on March 26, 1989, in Bataan, Philippines. Meztiso is an exploration of the artist’s identity as an individual born and raised in Guatemala; which is a country rich in natural resources where the majority of the population is native Maya yet the ruling class is majority white and poverty is widespread. The artist takes on this stunning contradiction using her own influences and views which were shaped by the political and economic upheaval and instability of her youth in Guatemala. An Interview With Lauren Groff, Matt Del Busto

Author Lauren Groff has written multiple books, most recently Florida (2018), a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Fiction. Groff, who is currently a Suzanne Young Murray Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, has received numerous awards and recognitions, including her novel Fates and Furies (2015) being lauded as then-president Obama’s book of the year in 2015. During her visit to Butler, Groff sat down with Manuscripts staff member Matt Del Busto to discuss the importance of failure, the morality of the sentence, and the dynamic between the writer and the author.
