Beauty Isn't Always Better: How Salesperson Attractiveness Affects Consumers' Approach Behaviors, Veronica L. Thomas, Stephanie M. Mangus, Dora E. Bock
Beauty Isn't Always Better: How Salesperson Attractiveness Affects Consumers' Approach Behaviors, Veronica L. Thomas, Stephanie M. Mangus, Dora E. Bock

This research examines how a consumer's committed romantic relationship influences their decision to approach an attractive salesperson in a retail environment. To date, the majority of research espouses the benefits of salesperson attractiveness in enhancing consumers' perceptions of the salesperson and the represented retailer. This is problematic because it creates a managerial bias toward attractive salespeople and, as we propose, provides an incomplete view of the effect of salesperson attractiveness on consumers' behavior. Drawing on the interpersonal relationship literature on commitment, we propose that consumers in committed relationships activate relationship-maintenance motives that override the beauty bias when a salesperson's attractiveness …
Bad Actors, Wendell Ward
Bad Actors, Wendell Ward
English Theses & Dissertations
This manuscript contains a collection of short stories. It also includes the first several chapters of a novella. Within are characters who act and suffer consequences without the imposition of supernatural elements to affect outcomes, which is hopefully what makes them seem “real.” But then there are ambiguities and archetypes and symbolic imagery dancing around the edges of their predicaments, too. Think flambéed Flaubert with the saltiness of Hemingway and the peppery tang of Woolf complimented with a sugary pinch of Charlotte Bronte to bring out the flavor of the tomatoes, poured over with a rich, Jungian gravy. If this …

Whistler’S Fog And The Aesthetics Of Place, Bruce Janz
Whistler’S Fog And The Aesthetics Of Place, Bruce Janz
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The concept of place has usually been understood as either a phenomenological, epistemological, or ethical category. An understanding of place as aesthetic or rhetorical, on the other hand, tends to focus on the widely varied uses of the concept. First, I sketch out the wide range of uses of place, that have been drawn from writings on the concept. These uses are not definitions of place, but rather functions that the term performs. Place stands in for other ideas, and allows access to different aspects of human experience. Second, I will draw from this range of uses some ideas about …
Burn The Panopticon: Irigaray's Ethics, Difference, Poetics, Simone Roberts
Burn The Panopticon: Irigaray's Ethics, Difference, Poetics, Simone Roberts
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph of Prologue]
The following essay has a purpose more than a thesis. This essay explains the central tenets of Irigaray's ethics of sexual difference through an understanding her work as that of a symbolist philosopher. Symbolist poetry and French Feminist philosophy like Irigaray's have several qualities in common. One is that the literal level of language is not where the action is. A reader must think associatively on many levels at once in order to gather and interpret the several indirect messages sent by a particular image or metaphor. Another is an acquired comfort with paradox. Paradoxes lie …

Creativity Its Phenomenology In Man And Nature, Margaret L. Mccoy
Creativity Its Phenomenology In Man And Nature, Margaret L. Mccoy
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The phenomenal world comes into being. The act is an autonomous process weaving the abstract world and the concrete world into one reality. We name this process "Creativity." A journey into mind and matter, into the inner subjective realm and the outer objective realm, is required to observe Creativity's grand performance. Western thought may be revolutionized in finding that in exploring Creativity man is exploring himself; Nature has consciousness as he does, and barriers between mind and matter are non-existent in the womb of creation. As ancient philosophies and mystical ideas of the East once proposed: the Many is One. …
Valuing In The Arts, Nonna B. Runner
Valuing In The Arts, Nonna B. Runner
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The topic of this thesis, valuing in the arts, involves the fine and performing arts, cultural values, kinds of education, and the quality of life. The purpose in talking about the value of the arts is to show how and why they have been valued throughout recorded history, to present an approach to art which fosters personal growth and enjoyment in the interaction with the arts, and to present arguments for the continued support by the present society for their encouragement and preservation. I will discuss false impressions about art which have limited the general public's enjoyment of arts, then …
