12. Ліля (Lilya: Ukrainian Translation Of Elfie Novel), Matthew Lipman
Early Elementary School Curriculum

21. Руся (Rusya: Ukrainian Translation Of Pixie Novel), Matthew Lipman
Early Elementary School Curriculum

The Cyborgian Self: Toward A Critical Social Theory Of Cyberspace, Michael Ian Borer
The Cyborgian Self: Toward A Critical Social Theory Of Cyberspace, Michael Ian Borer
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Contemporary social theory currently remains at a virtual standstill, quivering over the decision to radically leave the past behind or to continue within the historical narrative of the Enlightenment. Postmodern social theorists, advocating the position that we have, in fact, entered a new historical epoch, pose serious challenges to our perception of modernity and cultural identity. As an influential strategy that has infiltrated both the humanities and the social sciences for more than thirty years, postmodernism can no longer be dismissed as merely a fad or trend. In a world where the use of complex, and often mobile, …

Rorty's Complicit American Neo-Pragmatism, Haidar Eid
Rorty's Complicit American Neo-Pragmatism, Haidar Eid
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Despite the obvious French origin of poststructuralism, its paradigmatic resonance can be found in the American philosophical scene, an essential part of which is Richard Rorty's neo-pragmatism -- the theoretical basis of American (post)modernism. However, different from poststructuralism's apparent antagonism to the authoritarian establishments, Rorty adopts the Derridean poststructuralist motifs of the decentering of the subject, and the disappearance of meaning and truth in order to defend the establishment -- or rather, the status quo.

Live To Tell, Brad Kallenberg
Live To Tell, Brad Kallenberg
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
In recent years, countless Christians have found evangelism a difficult and even baffling scriptural mandate. Those we encounter, particularly young people, are often entirely unfamiliar with the basics of the Gospel. Traditional means of communicating the faith, from cold-calling to mass-mailings, simply no longer speak the language of the culture.
Brad Kallenberg recognizes that evangelism, even in our own backyard, has become a cross-cultural task. Like missionaries serving in foreign countries, we must become "students of the host culture." Much more than a "sinner's prayer," conversion requires a change of social identity.
Indeed, becoming a follower of Christ involves gaining …
Review: 'Immovable Laws, Irresistible Rights: Natural Law, Moral Rights, And Feminist Ethics', Rebecca Whisnant
Review: 'Immovable Laws, Irresistible Rights: Natural Law, Moral Rights, And Feminist Ethics', Rebecca Whisnant
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This collection of Pierce's essays traces the evolution of her thinking about natural law theory--and, more broadly, about talk of "natures" as normatively significant--over a period of 30 years. We see her move from a wholesale rejection of such talk, in her influential 1971 piece "Natural Law Language and Women," to a qualified admission that it can have its liberatory uses. Yet she maintains throughout that, progressive potential or no, natural law is far inferior to Kantian notions of rights and autonomy as a foundation for ethical thought.

Dante's Thomistic Vision: The Commedia, Frank Muller
Dante's Thomistic Vision: The Commedia, Frank Muller
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Dante's Commedia derives its form and content from the philosophy of St.Thomas Aquinas. It is a philosophical poemthat allegorically examines medieval moral theory, articulated in Aquinas' Summa Theologiae, in order to morally instruct the medieval layperson. This paper focuses mostly around the capital sin of pride due to its important place throughout the work and its efficacy in illustrating the link between Aquinas and Alighieri. The discussion of the sin involves providing Thomas' definition of pride and its opposite virtue, humility, in comparison with Dante's artistic representations. The overall goal is to present Dante's Commedia as an intricately philosophical work …
A Critical Examination Of The Philosophy Of Charles S. Peirce: A Defence Of The Claim That His Pragmatism Is Founded On His Theory Of Categories, Siosifa Ika
Theses
This thesis explores the relation in Peirce’s philosophy between his theory of categories and his pragmatism. My most central claim is that the possibility and validity of metaphysics as a philosophical science depend on the appropriateness of its method. I argue that an appropriate method for metaphysics is possible, and that in Peirce’s pragmatism as founded on his theory of categories we find such a method. In developing this thesis I seek to demonstrate four key propositions: 1. Peirce’s ‘pragmatism’ is fundamentally a form of metaphysical and epistemological realism and in this respect differs from logical positivism and other types …
Analisis Pemikiran Islam Dalam Karya Joesoef Sou'yb, Tirmizi
Analisis Pemikiran Islam Dalam Karya Joesoef Sou'yb, Tirmizi
Student Works (2000-2009)
Islamic thought in the works of Joesoef Sou'yb is a continuation of Islamic thought which have ever developed since the Mu'tazilite, Syeikh Muhammad bin 'Abdul Wahhab and Syeih Jamaluddin al- Afghan,, Syeikh Muhammad 'Abduh with his disciple Muhammad Rasyld Rida. His thought is a combination of Mu'tazilite rationalism, Syeikh 'Abdul Wahaib's spirit of reformism one of the signal thought salaif Muhammad 'Abduh's Islamic reformism-modernism. All ideas have taken place in Joesoefs thought completely. The main reason for such difficult identification is mainly due to the fact that Joesoef has inadequate relevant knowledge to the issues discussed by him. His interest …
[Introduction To] On The Epistemology Of The Senses In Early Chinese Thought, Jane Geaney
[Introduction To] On The Epistemology Of The Senses In Early Chinese Thought, Jane Geaney
Bookshelf
Sense perception, which is of enormous importance in Western philosophical traditions, has scarcely attracted the notice of scholars of early China. As a result of little direct comment on the senses in the Chinese philosophical classics, sinologists have generally interpreted their occasional references to sense functions in familiar Western philosophical terms. This original work challenges this tradition, arguing that despite the scarcity of direct comment on the senses in these sources, it is possible to discern early Chinese views of sensory functions from a close reading of the texts. Working with metaphorical and structural analysis, the author reconstructs an understanding …

Dreams Of Interpretation: Psychoanalysis And The Literature Of Vienna, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
Dreams Of Interpretation: Psychoanalysis And The Literature Of Vienna, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The first edition of Die Traumdeutung (translated as The Interpretation of Dreams, 1913) bears a publication date of 1900, although it actually appeared in Vienna in November 1899. This is consistent with the pivotal temporality of a work that looks retrospectively into the nineteenth century and prospectively into the twentieth. In 1931, Freud said of his first and arguably most important book, "It contains, even according to my present-day judgement, the most valuable of all the discoveries it has been my good fortune to make. " In terms of the influence not only on his later publications, but also …

(2002) Philosophy For Children In China: A Late Preliminary Anti-Report, David K. Kennedy, Walter Omar Kohan
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
We were part of a group of five academics visiting China in July 2000, in order to conduct two workshops in Philosophy for Children in two widely disparate cities - Kunming, in the ethnically diverse, far-from-Beijing southeastern province of Yunnan; and Shanghai, long known as the city where East meets West. Although we could not even read street signs, much less speak at all except through the kindness of interpreters, yet we sensed that Kunming and Shanghai were two different realities of contemporary China. The workshop in Kunming was conducted at the Southern Railway School, where P4C is being spearheaded …
Holism, Hermeneutics, And Heterophenomenology: A Critique Of Daniel Dennett's Intentional Stance, George Fletcher
Holism, Hermeneutics, And Heterophenomenology: A Critique Of Daniel Dennett's Intentional Stance, George Fletcher
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Heterophenomenology downplays the reality of the internal experiential aspects of consciousness in deference to an intentional, language-based model of consciousness that places emphasis on the neutral acceptance of the speech reports of subjects as the basis for understanding consciousness – thus placing the foundations of consciousness in a physical, monistic (physical sans soul), computational device (the brain). I shall argue that this methodology can be seen as a form of empathic extrapolation of self-understanding onto the other in dialogue, akin to the work of early hermeneutics. 11 This methodology is closely tied in with a contemporary connectionist conception of computability …

There's Got To Be A Better Way: Retribution Vs. Restoration, Jenna Lopes
All Volumes (2001-2008)
By examining the historical treatment of punishment and the results of those practices, we can more accurately diagnose the problems and prescribe the proper remedies. It is time that we focus on healing instead of simply treating the symptoms with catastrophic intervention. As with medicine, if a problem is detected and treated early the probability of recovery and a healthy life are much higher than beginning treatment after the body has become critically ill. I propose a holistic approach to the problem of crime and punishment and here, specifically, focus on the alternative to current correctional practices. The practice of …
Framing Intelligibility, Identity And Selfhood: A Reconsideration Of Spatio-Temporal Models, Sally Munt
Framing Intelligibility, Identity And Selfhood: A Reconsideration Of Spatio-Temporal Models, Sally Munt
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The relationship between intelligibility and identity over the past thirty years has largely been approached through the linguistic construct of the subject. Proposing that our subjectivities be theoretically comprehended (made intelligible) as discursive effects is now common sense. Poststructuralism, following particularly Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Jacques Lacan, has ensured that the subject is a cardinal category of contemporary thought; in any number of disciplines, it is one of the first concepts we teach to our undergraduates. But are we best served by continuing to insist on the intellectual primacy of the subject, formulated as it has been …
