Within the context of discussions regarding the Constitution and its forming, great emphasis is given to the history of the ideas which influenced and/or became a part of that document. The general term given to the line of thought of which our Constitution is a part is "natural law" theory, referring to the rights which the founding fathers, or natural law theorists in general, deemed so basic as to be understood. Such a doctrine manifests as the "inalienable rights ... life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence, but in a more subdued and practical manner …

Such is the rhetorical appeal of the idea of liberty that a variety of political philosophiesclaim to honour it. Republicans and Marxists, no less than libertarians and liberals,maintain that they and they alone are the true defenders of freedom. The literature ofcontemporary political theory is thus replete with rival analyses of the meaning ofliberty, and disputes about its measurement, distribution and institutional requirements. Our aim here is to gain some understanding of the meaning and the conditionsof liberty by working through the thicket of contemporary argument, though we mayhave to rest content with a better knowledge of the terrain.

During the 1989 democracy demonstrations in China, Americans struggled to understand, and in so doing challenged their own stereotypes about the people of China. PETER SCHECKNER, who with his wife was then teaching American culture in Beijing at a tourist college, had hoped to challenge his Chinese students' stereotypes about American society and found his expectations repeatedly called into question. The child and the fooL as they were presented in wisdom discourse stand for a crisis in the human understanding of self in its relation to whole, or cosmos. This crisis is, in fact, the very crisis represented by philosophy, if philosophy is thought of in that ultimate sense identified by Socrates in the Phaedo "practicing death'. For death is the great, paradigmatic crisis in human understanding. This thesis is an exploration of the way in which David Malouf develops ideas of epistemology and ontology in three of his novels. The novels discussed are Child's Play (1982), The Great World (1990) and Remembering Babylon (1993). Of particular concern here are the different ways in which figures in the text are constructed as having imperfect and sometimes contradictory systems of making sense of their world.
