In "Kant's Doctrine of Obligatory Ends," Henry Allison offers an interpretation of this central doctrine of the Tugendlehre portion of Kant's Metaphysics of Morals that partly agrees with and partly takes issue with an earlier article of mine on the same topic. The disagreement between us might seem to be on a small point, and yet I think it will tum out that this point has considerable significance for interpreting and understanding Kant's ethical theory. I wish here to explain the issues, and defend my own earlier account.

Kant gives four examples to illustrate the application of the categorical imperative immediately after introducing its “universal law” formulation in Chapter Two his Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. These examples have been much discussed to gain an understanding of how the categorical imperative applies to derive specific duties. It is argued that the discussions found in these examples do not accord well with Kant’s fuller account of that application in his later work The Metaphysics of Morals. This involves, for Husserl, an analysis of modernity as arising from the thought of Descartes and the physical science of Galileo. My thesis is a discussion of Plato's divided line with a special concentration on the fourth level of knowledge. First, the discussion centers on gaining an understanding of the divided line and what Plato says about the method of attaining fourth level knowledge. Second, I show the four levels of the line in two of Plato's dialogues, the Republic and the Phaedrus. The first three levels match the description of them that Plato gives in the divided line, but instead of finding what Plato describes for the fourth level we find a myth. This thesis studied the possible Nietzschean influences upon or parallels within the early works of Mary Daly, radical feminist philosopher. To this end, the thesis first tried encapsulate Nietzschean thought in the discussion of the eternal recurrence, the will-to-power and self-overcoming. Then it proceeded to discuss Mary Daly's self-described project of moving beyond the patriarchal structures of the Catholic church and society as a whole. And finally, while it avoided questions of Nietzsche's alleged misogyny, this study outlined possible points of light between a particular feminist project and the ""lasting"" value of Nietzschean philosophy. Albert Schweitzer’s ethics of reverence for life is more complex and interesting than first appears. It contains themes relevant to contemporary environmental ethics, including a virtue-ethics approach that emphasizes personal responsibility and tolerance, empathy for living organisms, and the fundamental unity of life. Not surprising, then, Schweitzer has recently been acknowledged for pioneering a biocentric (life-centered) ethical theory.

At the same time, Schweitzer’s ethic has four unpalatable features: pantheism, anthropomorphism, excessive subjectivity, and guilt mongering. I trace these features to the metaphysical framework in which Schweitzer develops his ideal of reverence for life. I also show how the framework can …

Feeling good about oneself is, today, a fashionable way of describing self-esteem. Collections of more or less discrete feeling states, whether of happiness, confidence, competence, success, well-being and others, supposedly add up to feeling good about oneself. Accordingly, a villain and a saint might implausibly find themselves in company, as belonging to the class of those enjoying self-esteem. That both may be victims of self-deception, pathological cases, is irrelevant, for to the extent that self-esteem is tied to feeling states, virtually anyone may be a candidate. Sympathy For The Monastery: Monks And Their Stereotypes In The Canterbury Tales, Shiela Pardee

The two monks that appear in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the pilgrim Daun Piers and Daun John in the Shipman's Tale, seem to be everything one would expect from medieval estates satire. They are attractive outdoorsmen with sophisticated appetites, fine clothing, and healthy complexions; in spite of their vows of poverty, they are the very image oof medieval prosperity. Although Chaucer conforms to the image of the worldly monk familiar to his audience, his intentions are more complex than simply to replicate and confirm the stereotype. Divergent Journeys: Devils, Readers, And The Narrator's Art In 'Þe Deuelis Perlament', Gary D. Schmidt

In 1509, Wynkyn de Worde published a five-hundred-line poem that he, in defiance of the poet's own suggestion that the piece be called 'þe Deuelis Perlament' (1 490), entitled 'The Parliment of Fyendys'. It would remain known by that title — if it can be said to have been known at all — for the next three centuries, when the Roxburghe Club reprinted de Worde's text about 1820 for private distribution. A wider audience would wait almost another half-century for Furnivall's EETS edition in 1868. But still another century would pass before 'þe Deuelis Perlament' began to be taken seriously …
