The Motion Of Intellect On The Neoplatonic Reading Of Sophist 248e-249d, Eric D. Perl

This paper defends Plotinus’ reading of Sophist 248e-249d as an expression of the togetherness or unity-in-duality of intellect and intelligible being. Throughout the dialogues Plato consistently presents knowledge as a togetherness of knower and known, expressing this through the myth of recollection and through metaphors of grasping, eating, and sexual union. He indicates that an intelligible paradigm is in the thought that apprehends it, and regularly regards the forms not as extrinsic “objects” but as the contents of living intelligence. A freshman major in business marketing from Temecula, California, Max Lyons defends German philosopher E.F. Schumacher’s criticism of modern philosophy and his theory of philosophical mapmaking. Lyons fluently synthesizes Schumacher and modern philosopher David Hume’s work to address the philosophical approaches to climate change, while simultaneously navigating the complicated divergence between modern and post-modern philosophical discourse. The document Justice in the World, released in 1971 by the World Synod of Bishops, is an excellent basis for thinking about pedagogical practice in Ignatian higher education as a constellation of acts of justice. I describe here my personal experience (as an ambiguously Catholic faculty member) of teaching an upper division ethics course in the core curriculum and contextualize it in terms both of Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and the 1971 Synod document.

This essay outlines a view of practical wisdom drawing on the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. In it, I discuss the presuppositions of practical wisdom, namely the ordering to the end of true human happiness. Next, the focus shifts to the “parts” or elements of practical wisdom in order to highlight the intellectual aspects of practical wisdom as a cognitive perfection. Finally, the essay addresses prudence as practical, the actual carrying out of the right deed, at the right time and in the right way. The concept of wisdom is largely ignored by contemporary philosophers. But given recent movements in the fields of ethics and epistemology, the time is ripe for a return to this concept. This article lays some groundwork for further philosophical work in ethics and epistemology on wisdom. Its focus is the distinction between practical wisdom and theoretical wisdom or between phronesis and sophia. Several accounts of this distinction are considered and rejected. A more plausible, but also considerably more complex, account is offered. The discussion sheds light on the relation between practical wisdom and theoretical wisdom, and on the positive …

The article discusses the conditions to which an action with two effects or double-effect, one good and the other evil, can be considered ethically permissible. It cites hypothetical cases describing the conditions which include that the action itself, its object is not intrinsically evil; the evil effect is not a means to the good effect; the evil effect is not intended as an end and there is a morally serious reason justifying allowing the evil effect.

This paper is a preliminary attempt at theory building by exploring the use of art and language in art therapy through a theoretical inquiry model. Inductive and deductive processes are used to explore literature from the fields of psychology, art philosophy (particularly aesthetics), and linguistics. Concepts common to each of these disciplines are then further explored through the lens of bilingual therapy. Practical applications are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.

The article reviews reports on the philosophy and theology of bio ethics, including "Is Conscientious Objection Incompatible with a Physician's Professional Obligations?" and "Negative and Positive Claims of Conscience," both by Mark R. Wicclair, published in the January 2009 issue of "Cambridge Quarterly of Health Care Ethics." Wicclair discusses the incompatibility thesis. The article also observes that the contemporary debate on conscience protection has intensified.
