Cosmic Periods In The Philosophy Of Empedocles, Edwin L. Minar Jr.

The highest human types or "lives", which one may go through before attaining the divinity and immortality of fr. 147, are those of benefactors of their fellow man: "and finally they come as seers and bards and physicians and leaders among men on earth.1133 The humanistic motive that led Empedocles to see as the ruling forces in nature Love and Strife, which are most familiar to us as forces in the life of man, is also the leading spirit of his physical philosophy.

Body And Soul In The Philosophy Of Plotinus, Audrey N. M. Rich
Body And Soul In The Philosophy Of Plotinus, Audrey N. M. Rich
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
How did Plotinus conceive of the relation existing between the human soul and the human body? Plato did not give the impression of being vitally concerned about this question. Although Plotinus professes to be a follower of Plato, he is much more profoundly influenced in this instance by Aristotle. Besides owing much to Aristotle, Plotinus' account of sensation, pleasure and pain, and the emotions in general clearly shows the influence of the medical theories of Galen.
Plotinus' belief in reincarnation shows the more Platonic strain in his approach to the body-soul problem.
Xenophanes And The Axiomatization Of The God-Concept, Harald A.T. Reiche
Xenophanes And The Axiomatization Of The God-Concept, Harald A.T. Reiche
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Inasmuch as Xenophanes rests his axiomatization of the god-concept on the logic of "likeness" (prepein), implicit in the Greek correlation of arete and time, he rests his case for an idealistic, nomomorphic revision of theology and human society on a correspondence-theory of truth, whose referent is periodically verifiable as superlatively powerful and universally binding.

The Two States In Plato's Republic, Martin Ostwald
The Two States In Plato's Republic, Martin Ostwald
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Unlike the state of the Guardians which remains "set up as a model in heaven," there is, in Plato's view in the Republic, the faint hope that the state of the Philosopher may be possible.
Reason And Eros In The Ascent Passage Of The Symposium, Julius M.E. Moravcsik
Reason And Eros In The Ascent Passage Of The Symposium, Julius M.E. Moravcsik
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The purpose of this paper is limited to examining the roles which reason and eros play in the ascent, and to deal with some related ontological issues. The final vision is not an act of integration and coordination, but the intuiting of an entity not comprehended previously.
The Problem Of Anaxagoras, Margaret Reesor
The Problem Of Anaxagoras, Margaret Reesor
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Anaxagoras held that the objects of sense perception, both entities and qualities, were existents, and not relative to the percipient, and that they formed a continuum which observed the criteria of Parmenides' being. Birth, dissolution, growth and change of quality were explained in terms of combination and separation. the opposites were inseparable and infinite in degree, and the parts of the spectrum were one. the opposites were used to account for sense perception as well as for pleasure and pain. Since animals and plants are all product of the same natural process, they are essentially alike. Man lives in a …

Plato's Political Philosophy (Abstract), Ludwig Edelstein
Plato's Political Philosophy (Abstract), Ludwig Edelstein
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Plato had one consistent theory of politics; the Republic, Politicus, and Laws form a unity, complementary rather than contradictory. These dialogues are all theoretical, none provides a blueprint for political action. Political theory establishes the standard by which we must judge and thus allows us to act according to an aim.

A Critical Study Of Hu Shih's Thought, Kei Tin Wong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an attempt to study Hu Shih's thought with a critical analysis of his intellectual 11fe and an evaluation of his contribution to modern Chinese mind. Hu, an outstanding Chinese scholar, is held in high esteem as a statesman, philosopher, liberal, and poet, both in his own country and abroad. In the early twenties he initiated China's "Literary Revolution," which brought about radical reforms in Chinese writings which, up to then, formed the basis of …

Some Active Techniques Of Whole Functioning, William Moyer Swartley
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The following 18 best described as a comparative survey. It was written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the American Academy of Asian Studies, a graduate school of the College of the Pacific. Since Its formation 1n 1951, the Academy has sponsored an almost unique approach to Asian Studies. The emphasis has been on what the people of the contemporary Western world have to learn from, rather than about, the cultures of the Near and Far East. Until recently, most oriental scholars have accepted a scholarly taboo against "getting too close" to …
