Past The Ravening Lion Of Presentism: C.S. Lewis In The Next Century, Richard Hill
Past The Ravening Lion Of Presentism: C.S. Lewis In The Next Century, Richard Hill
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
One of C.S. Lewis’s pet peeves was the phenomenon he called “chronological snobbery,” a concept other writers have termed “presentism.” The notion involves the smug certainty that today’s idea on anything are automatically improvements on what people in the past thought on the same subjects. This paper examines the concepts of presentism and how it relates to Lewis and current culture.

C.S. Lewis: The Abolition Of Man, Christopher Horton
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
In The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis calls the natural, moral law of the universe by the name Tao. This essay seeks to define Lewis’s idea of the Tao, demonstrate where the principle of the Tao is reinforced in Lewis’s fictional works, and conclude with Lewis’s ‘prophetical’ warnings to modern humanity’s rebellion against the Tao.

The Necessity Of Doubt In George Macdonald's Within And Without, James Washick
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
While the Scottish author George MacDonald is currently remembered as a writer of fiction and fantasy, in his own time he was well known for his poetry as well, even preferring to think of himself as a poet rather than a novelist. This paper examines his poetry, focusing on the theme of doubt and its role in the life of a Christian.
Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney
Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell, Eber, & Tatsuoka, 1970, 5th Edition). Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests. Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. …
Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves
Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Since a public health crisis calls upon communication that thwarts misunderstandings, scientists should understand the …

Dorothy L. Sayers And The Passionate Intellect, Roger Phillips
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Dorothy L. Sayers wrote, “[W]here the intellect is dominant it becomes the channel of all other feelings. The ‘passionate intellect’ is really passionate. It is the only point at which ecstasy can enter.” While a phrase that is often used by biographers, the actual meaning of ‘passionate intellect’ is up for discussion. In exploring the life of Sayers one can see how she came to use this term and its meaning in the context of her life.

C.S. Lewis: Past Watchful Dragons, Stephanie Jones
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Through his many stories C.S. Lewis has a unique way in which he engages the reader, first catching them with an idea, then slipping past the “watchful dragons” of our intellect to speak to our deepest parts. These stories are often discussed intellectually, but it is also important to know how these stories impact readers on a personal level.

Till We Have Faces: A Restoration Of Perspective On The Condition Of Man, Joan Alexander
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Man’s relationship to a Divine Being is one of the persisting concerns of literature, with modern leanings contending that God does not exist or does not involve himself with man. C.S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces concerns itself with this approach to God, proposing that it might not be God who is the problem but man’s perception of him.

Human Destiny In That Hideous Strength, Wilfred Martens
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Though the most different book from his space trilogy, That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis is an important part of the narrative within the trilogy. Whereas Out of the Silent Plant and Paralandra spoke of the battle of good and evil in distant space, That Hideous Strength presents the same battle happening on earth. This narrative poses a question of readers in a way that the others did not, asking them how they will respond to the battle happening in their home world. In doing so, Lewis presents a case on the nature of man and his influence over destiny. …

Some Shattering Simplicity: Suffering, Love, And Faith In The Thought Of C.S. Lewis, Jennifer Woodruff
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
A repeated theme in the works of C.S. Lewis is the tension inherent in why and how we believe and accept Christianity. Christianity makes sense of reality, but at the same time shatters all our expectations of reality. Examining Lewis’s writings about the nature of suffering, faith, and love we learn how this is not a contradiction but a shattering simplicity that reveals the truth about reality.

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
There are many diverse understandings of the futuristic passages of scriptures and how to interpret their terms and symbols. Two eschatological perspectives on the “Omega Point” (the end of time when God would re-unite the church with himself) can be found in the writings of French Jesuit anthropologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and British Scholar C.S. Lewis.
