To make straight the paths for the poets, and the critics, the terms literature and character shall be defined, the extent, as well as the limitation, of the influence of literature on character outlined, and a method of approach to the study of literature discussed. First, then, there will be a discussion of terms, then the opinions of writers on the moral values of literature, and finally, in the light of this discussion, this paper will attempt to show whether these writers claim more for literature than it actually can and does accomplish, and just how literature can be made …

Before endeavoring to formulate certain decisions of the Neo-Stoicism of Seneca it will be most advantageous to discuss fundamental Stoicism. Stoicism was that system of philosophy which gripped the worlds of Greece and Rome for a number of centuries and claimed many eminent men among its followers. The doctrine set forth by the Stoics was essentially a practical one since it laid most stress on a proper mode of life.
