Cinempathy: Phenomenology, Cognitivism, And Moving Images, Robert Sinnerbrink
Cinempathy: Phenomenology, Cognitivism, And Moving Images, Robert Sinnerbrink
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Some of the most innovative philosophical engagement with cinema and ethics in recent years has come from phenomenological and cognitivist perspectives. This trend reflects a welcome re-engagement with cinema as a medium with the potential for ethical transformation, that is, with the idea of cinema as a medium of ethical experience. This paper explores the phenomenological turn in film theory, emphasizing the ethical implications of phenomenological approaches to affect and empathy, emotion, and evaluation. I argue that the oft-criticized subjectivism of phenomenological theories can be supplemented by cognitivist approaches that highlight the complex forms of affective response, emotional engagement, and …

Edward Yang's Confusion, Law Nga-Chun, Lo Chun-Cheong
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Edward Yang (in Chinese 楊德昌, 1947-2007) is one of the most renowned Taiwanese directors, whose works raise criticisms of modernity. Since the New Culture Movement in the 1910s and 1920s, Chinese literati have queried the place of traditional Chinese culture, especially Confucianism, on the road to modernization. This paper gives an account of Yang’s understanding of modernization and the Confucian tradition as illustrated in his work, A Confucian Confusion (1994). We argue that, though he despised politically endorsed Confucianism as ideology, without sufficient justification Yang nonetheless reserves the possibility of taking Confucianism as a supplement to modernity.
"Can The Audience Want?" On The Artistic Status Of Contemporary Tv-Series, Angela Keppler
"Can The Audience Want?" On The Artistic Status Of Contemporary Tv-Series, Angela Keppler
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This paper takes up a question that Theodor W. Adorno posed in 1963 relating to television. The aim is to situate the new TV series, which are part of so-called Quality TV, against the backdrop of the tradition, and to analyze the forms in which the medium is being used. An inspection of pertinent sequences leads to the conclusion that the enjoyment we experience when watching these series stems from the very type of active-passive involvement that Adorno described as being essential only for objects of high culture.
The Aesthetic Experience, Flow, And Smart Technology: Viewing Art In A Virtual Environment, Carol Ikard
The Aesthetic Experience, Flow, And Smart Technology: Viewing Art In A Virtual Environment, Carol Ikard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Smart technology can support art educators and museum professionals in mediating the aesthetic experience. It can also increase museum attendance, enrich the viewer's delight and engagement with artworks and art collections, and provide an avenue for extending art on a global level. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a mobile art app with text-based narrative influences scores on an aesthetic experience questionnaire. This quantitative research measured the difference in pretest and posttest human-computer interaction scores on the Aesthetic Experience Questionnaire Form after participants used two versions of a mobile art app. Csikszentmihalyi's flow was …
Philosophy With A Twist: La Rivière Du Hibou, Paisley Livingston, Trevor Ponech
Philosophy With A Twist: La Rivière Du Hibou, Paisley Livingston, Trevor Ponech
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This paper explores the category of films known as “twist films” in relation to distinctions between different modes of epistemic access to works. With reference to the case of Robert Enrico’s short film, La rivière du hibou (1961), the philosophical significance of different sorts of twist films is explored. Twists are also discussed in relation to emotive responses, with special attention to the paradox of suspense
The Ethos Of Cinema, Martin Seel
The Ethos Of Cinema, Martin Seel
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
The history of film has always been accompanied by a theoretical debate over its artistic potential. In the works of many theoreticians, more or less explicit anthropological speculations have played a significant role, focusing on the relation between cinema and formerly dominant modes of perception and living. Against this background, this paper addresses the position of film within the arts, and thus also the position of this art form vis-à-vis the role of art in relation to the human condition. One essential characteristic of films is that they are capable of bringing their audience into a specific state of being …
New Grand Narratives—The Metaphysical Worldview Of Avatar And Cloud Atlas, Josef Früchtl
New Grand Narratives—The Metaphysical Worldview Of Avatar And Cloud Atlas, Josef Früchtl
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Referring to the films Avatar (2009) and Cloud Atlas (2012), the author will demonstrate that a new era of metaphysical holism follows Postmodernism. These films celebrate a resurrection of the flesh with 3-D technology and a reincarnation of souls with the aesthetic technique of morphing. However apocalyptic their visions of the future might be, and however much they might seem to worship technical megalomania, they are also and again conveying a resounding ethical message and a taste of Utopia.
Ontology And The Aesthetics Of Cinematographic Bodies, Jean-Yves Heurtebise
Ontology And The Aesthetics Of Cinematographic Bodies, Jean-Yves Heurtebise
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
If it is true, as Bergson claimed, that the universe is the sum of images (less than “objective” things but more than “subjective” representations), and if it is correct, as Deleuze said, that this hypothesis bears direct consequences for our understanding of the cinematographic art, then the analysis of cinematographic images and, especially, of the cinematographic images of the body (this living part of matter, this incarnated form of consciousness) can provide not only interesting aesthetic comments about specific directors and films, but also a philosophical understanding of the diverse modes of the sensible incarnation of human bodies. Interestingly enough, …
The Aesthetic Experiences Of Aura, Awe, And Wonder: Reflections On Their Nature And Relationships, Russell Quacchia
The Aesthetic Experiences Of Aura, Awe, And Wonder: Reflections On Their Nature And Relationships, Russell Quacchia
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
The aim of this essay is to examine the semantic nature and linkage between the experiential phenomena of aura, awe, and wonder, central to matters of the aesthetic experience. In aesthetic commentary these terms are generally used rather loosely, often independently of each other and, most often, without regard to the connections between them. It would seem worthwhile to examine the nature of each of these terms to move toward understanding them and their mutual relationships. The conclusions drawn are that the aura effect appears to operate universally at the cognitive level of the aesthetic experience while those of awe …
Aesthetics And Autobiography: Emotion And Style In The Book Of Disquiet By Fernando Pessoa / Bernardo Soars, Mikel Iriondo Aranguren
Aesthetics And Autobiography: Emotion And Style In The Book Of Disquiet By Fernando Pessoa / Bernardo Soars, Mikel Iriondo Aranguren
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
At the beginning of The Book of Disquiet, Bernardo Soares writes: “In these random impressions, and with no desire to be other than random, I indifferently narrate my factless autobiography, my lifeless history. These are my Confessions, and if in them I say nothing, it’s because I have nothing to say.”
Written a century ago, these words illustrate a great distance from the traditional way of writing an autobiography. They confront, however, the same paradox, which is how can any of our lives, constituted by different and unrelated events, be structured as a linear story looking for a meaning, …

Absolute Pitch And Tone Identification, Gilead Bar-Elli
Absolute Pitch And Tone Identification, Gilead Bar-Elli
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Absolute pitch (AP), besides the psychological and neurological interests it has, raises some conceptual difficulties that can teach us about the richness of our notion of musical tone and various aspects of its identification. It is argued that when AP is conceived under a slim notion of identifying the pitch of a crude sound, it is hardly meaningful and has no significance in music comprehension. The rich notion, which is the meaningful and important one, involves knowing the position of a tone in a tone-space and its relations. This is presented as experiential: hearing and identifying tones under concepts and …
Humor And Enlightenment, Part I: The Theory, Peter H. Karlen
Humor And Enlightenment, Part I: The Theory, Peter H. Karlen
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Part I of this article advances a new theory of humor, the Enlightenment Theory, while contrasting it with other main theories, including the Incongruity, Repression/Relief/Release, and Superiority Theories. The Enlightenment Theory does not contradict these other theories but rather subsumes them. As argued, each of the other theories cannot account for all the aspects of humor explained by the Enlightenment Theory. The discussion is illustrated with examples of humor and explores the acts and circumstances of humor, its literary and artistic expressions, and its physical reactions. Part II shows how the Enlightenment Theory meets challenging issues in humor theory where …

Part I of this article advanced a new theory of humor, the Enlightenment Theory, while contrasting it with other main theories, including the Incongruity, Repression/Relief/Release, and Superiority Theories. The Enlightenment Theory does not contradict these other theories but rather subsumes them. As argued, each of the other theories cannot account for all the aspects of humor explained by the Enlightenment Theory. Part II shows how the Enlightenment Theory meets challenging issues in humor theory where other theories falter, including failed humor, motivation for humor, tickling, laughing gas, and sadistic humor. Also mentioned are the Enlightenment Theory's application to literary and …
The Plight Of Aesthetics In Iran, Majid Heidari
The Plight Of Aesthetics In Iran, Majid Heidari
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Richard Rorty believes that philosophy in the West is the result of a conflict between religion and science. In fact, philosophy seeks to clarify the border between religion and science, so neither of them would be able to overstep its explanatory or predictive potentialities. He remarks that we do not have such a thing as philosophy in the East. This paper intends to ask two questions: what is the nature of the comparable conflict in an Eastern country, Iran, and what are its effects on aesthetic studies? I will draw on the idea of the conflict between theology and mysticism. …

Surviving The Anthropocene Through The Arts, Virgilio Rivas, Jeffrey Bartilet, Jayson Jimenez
Mabini Review
We are in the age of disasters, an era of climate change, of extreme and life-threatening weather disturbances, of flash floods and super-typhoons. But we are also in an age of voracious consumption of resources, an era of massive oil and nuclear energy use, an age of wastelands and carbon emissions, an age of steel, of plastic, and concrete, the age of GMOs, of soil alteration and water depletion. This is the age of what recent scholars call the Anthropocene, the era of how the human being becomes a geological agent changing the planet. This is where the project hopes …
Barthes On Writing And Authorship: A Polemical Précis, Virgilio Rivas
Barthes On Writing And Authorship: A Polemical Précis, Virgilio Rivas
Mabini Review
In this paper we will try to revisit Barthes’ brief essay ‘Authors and Writers’ by way of reopening the essay’s proximity to some of the most important theorists of our time, such as Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida, and most especially, Mikhail Bakhtin whose individual writings on issues of language, translation, etc., to cite a few, mesh without conceptual and analytical difficulty. Their insightful provocations are known for their shared intuitive trajectories which altogether radicalize the concept of the writing craft and its complicated relation to the traditional conception of the author. Their writings carve out a common …
The City As A Spectacular Monster And The Hysterical Baudrillardian Flâneur, Gian Carla Agbisit
The City As A Spectacular Monster And The Hysterical Baudrillardian Flâneur, Gian Carla Agbisit
Mabini Review
Propelled by the new kind of capitalism, and aided by a scientific and technological progress that culminates in virtual perfection, the city has now become both the producer and the consumer of spectacle. Caught in a tangle of means and ends, the spectacle that used to be merely an icing of the cake, a tiny ribbon of the dress, a glitter, or a slight shimmer, has become the product to be consumed.

Conference papers
Over the past twenty-five years aesthetic practice, theory and Arts policy in Europe and North America has been subject to three different yet interrelated and international “turns”: creative, social and ethical this has been exemplified by Arts funding policy in Ireland. Combined, these three turns produce a tone of cultural production that is pitched toward a more measurable and overtly instrumental direction. This paper explores the trends regarding the critical terms of instrumentality and autonomy and their relevance to arguments relating to criteria employed in current Irish Arts funding policy. We argue that that existing Arts funding criteria relegates the …

Abstract
The writing that follows is intended to provide a theoretical framework for the motives behind my practice. The primary concerns addressed are the reception, transmission, and physical shape of knowledge. I will discuss a human condition that exists as a byproduct of both the legacy of representation as well as the innate biology of the brain. I will argue that as a society we are governed by the residue of an extreme logic, and that this condition places severe margins on our potential for creative solutions. I will propose that our ability to create meaning is stifled by the …
Considering Triple Self-Portraiture In The Work Of María Izquierdo, Brooke Lashley
Considering Triple Self-Portraiture In The Work Of María Izquierdo, Brooke Lashley
The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal
This paper looks to María Izquierdo’s paintings, Prisioneras (Prisoners) of 1936 and Sueño y presentimiento (Dream and Premonition) of 1947, as case studies for activating a theory of triple self-portraiture. The theory reflects how plurality arises in the singular or in single significations of the self and disrupts homogeneity in thinking about identities for the self and others within the genre of self-portraiture. In activating a theory of triple self-portraiture, I found three forms of the self in Izquierdo's works: the self as oppressed (the past); the self as oppressing (the current); and the self as an emancipator (future). Although …

The Finales Of Robert Shumann's Piano Sonatas And Fantasie, Emiko Sato
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation sets out to examine the finales of Robert Schumann's Piano Sonatas (opp. 11, 14, 22 [original finale]), and Fantasie (op. 17), with an especial focus on their form, which can be broadly categorized as parallel form. The introduction examines historical criticisms of Schumann's large-scale works, pointing out some of the idiosyncratic features found in Schumann's finales. Each chapter will present a comprehensive analysis of one of the finales. I make use of color diagrams in the formal analyses, which expeditiously and efficiently elucidate the repeating patterns of thematic and transitional materials; they also visually reflect the actual …
The Philosophical Side Of Contemporary Art Forms, Kristina Bodetti
The Philosophical Side Of Contemporary Art Forms, Kristina Bodetti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this project is to show that contemporary art forms, specifically popular music, film and comics/graphic novels, are capable of, and do in many cases work as philosophical pieces. I believe that an analysis of these mediums will reveal instances in which the works of art explicate established philosophical theories, expand upon them, and in some cases invent new theories.
Each new medium of art gets examined by philosophy in its turn and its merits as a unique art form are debated. From these arguments it is possible to extrapolate the ways in which these works can become …
