Behaviorist Ethics In A Polynesian Community: Anuta, Solomon Islands, Richard Feinberg, Gina Zavota Dec 2023

Behaviorist Ethics In A Polynesian Community: Anuta, Solomon Islands, Richard Feinberg, Gina Zavota

Pacific Studies

In this essay, we explore the ethical system of Anuta, a remote Polynesian community in the Solomon Islands. We discuss the system’s underlying premises, the way in which the elements fit together into a coherent whole, and how the system might be characterized in terms familiar to Western philosophers and social scientists. In particular, Anutans draw a connection between happiness, as expressed in overt laughter, and moral virtue. Thus, we argue, Anutan ethics can reasonably be described as “utilitarian” and “behaviorist” and, on that basis, be compared with ethical systems found in other cultural and geographic regions.

Land Groups, Land Registration, And Economic Development Projects On Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Tarcisius Kabutaulaka Dec 2019

Land Groups, Land Registration, And Economic Development Projects On Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Tarcisius Kabutaulaka

Pacific Studies

Neoliberal economic development requires that land boundaries and land groups be identified and registered, creating property rights and titles that can be bought, sold, and transferred. Registration makes land and land groups legible, thereby allowing states to exercise control and make land accessible to potential investors. This process of commodification creates changes that are often socially traumatic. In many Melanesian societies, individual and group rights to land are traditionally fluid and dynamic. Registration, however, freezes them. This paper examines how the process of land registration not only identify but also create land groups and influences how they respond to economic …

Pacific Studies

Over the past three decades, there has been a growing scholarly interest in indigenous epistemology, methodology, and pedagogy. This article examines how Kwara'ae parents in the Solomon Islands engage in the direct teaching and modeling of indigenous epistemological strategies through formal counseling sessions known as fa'amanata'anga. Drawing on sociocultural education theory and Kwara'ae indigenous knowledge frameworks, the research highlights how these sessions serve as dynamic sites for the enactment and transmission of social ontology and cultural values, emphasizing the lifelong nature of indigenous learning practices.

Rice And Tea, Fish And Taro: Sikaiana Migration To Honiara, William W. Donner Mar 2002

Rice And Tea, Fish And Taro: Sikaiana Migration To Honiara, William W. Donner

Pacific Studies

For the past seventy years, the people from Sikaiana in the Solomon Islands have been migrating away from their atoll. After World War II, most Sikaiana migrants settled in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, located on Guadalcanal Island. Several generations of Sikaiana people have matured in Honiara, and, during my stays in the 1980s, the Sikaiana population in Honiara outnumbered the population on Sikaiana. In Honiara, Sikaiana migrants have developed many activities that bring them together as a community, including a residential settlement, funerals, wedding exchanges, and fund-raising events. Sikaiana people living on the atoll form a small …

Anutans In Honiara: A Polynesian People’S Struggle To Maintain Community In The Solomon Islands, Richard Feinberg Mar 2002

Anutans In Honiara: A Polynesian People’S Struggle To Maintain Community In The Solomon Islands, Richard Feinberg

Pacific Studies

As formerly isolated peoples are brought under the umbrella of a new international political system and the world market economy, the moral order that underpins their old communities is inevitably challenged. In an attempt to meet this challenge, they may look to common origin, distinctive genealogical characteristics, shared connections to a special place, or their unique beliefs and customs. This essay examines people of Anuta, a remote Polynesian outpost in the Solomon Islands—the pressures and enticements encouraging Anutans to emigrate to Honiara, the national capital, and the way in which resettlement has created opportunities and problems for both the home …

Righting Wrongs On Anuta, Richard Feinberg Sep 1998

Righting Wrongs On Anuta, Richard Feinberg

Pacific Studies

Apology and compensation are commonly employed to reestablish social harmony when one person causes injury to others, thereby disrupting social order. Here I explore the way in which these mechanisms are utilized by the people of Anuta, a Polynesian outlier in the Solomon Islands. I suggest that compensation and apology need not be counterposed and, in fact, are often intertwined as aspects of a single process. Historical transition from the widespread Polynesian emphasis on rank, respect, collective responsibility, and mutual assistance to a more individualistic and competitive cultural environment has led to changes in Anutan views of right and wrong. …
