Many Hispanic adults in the U.S. do not receive adequate healthcare. This study seeks to explore the causes of this phenomenon: is it due to a language or educational barrier, the cost prohibitive nature of proper healthcare, undocumented status, or myths and false rumors that have spread throughout the Hispanic community regarding health insurance? Data will be collected and analyzed from the Pew Hispanic Center and from the 2009 U.S. Census, which will contain information regarding a variety of factors that could possibly explain the underlying reasons why Hispanics do not receive adequate healthcare. This study examines the differences in attitudes of teachers and university students towards bilingual education, with an emphasis on how each group defines bilingual education and what role they believe bilingual education should play. This descriptive study investigates the opinions of proposed English-Only legislation and how the opinions of the current college generation will affect the future of this country's language laws. The English-Only Movement, also known as the Official English movement, refers to a political movement to establish the English language as the only official language in the United States and in government operations. This study, describes the perception heritage Spanish-speakers have of their language abilities after they have studied abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. Research has shown that many heritage speakers struggle with their confidence in their heritage language, but that after studying abroad, the student's confidence in their language capabilities increases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the levels of educational attainment for Hispanics in Illinois and to gain an understanding of why possible trends occur. The research question is: What is the correlation between English proficiency, nativity and educational attainment for Hispanics as compared with the overall population in Cook and McLean counties? In order to determine the correlation between these variables, data from the 2000 US Census were analyzed for the two population groups. Since that time, there has been an increase in the number of intrastate conflicts, and these conflicts have become more violent and deadly. Since many of them involve questions of identity, the traditional methods of conflict resolution typically cannot be applied. I chose an alternative ISP of doing batik because it incorporated all of the facets of my interests: anthropology, international development, and art. As an artist, creating my own batik satisfied my love for expressing how I see the world through art. As an anthropologist, I was able to gain insight on a new culture. As an international activist, I was able to explore how batik can be used as a mechanism to improve the quality of life for people in Senegal. English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing group of students in the United States. The purpose of this research is to help better understand the personal experiences of these students in their journey to learn English while still maintaining their Spanish roots. Much research has been done on a large scale to identify the successes and shortcomings of the American education system in supporting these immigrant ELLs. This project explores the intersection between vendors and tourists in Greenmarket Square, a popular arts and crafts market in Cape Town. I examine the way in which the identities of the vendors and tourists are co-constructed in this market setting. I focus, in particular, on how vendors articulate and negotiate their identity through the tourist gaze. In addition, I consider the role of the objects in the co-construction of the tourists and toured identities. My findings are based on data gathered through participant observation with vendors, interviews with vendors and tourists, and content analysis of objects and tourist guidebooks. My …

Tibetan Buddhism has numerous detailed and diverse traditions of ritual music that play an integral part in religious practices. Despite the prominence of such performances in Tibetan Buddhist life, spectators and researchers alike have frequently misunderstood them based purely on physical observation. As a religion that focuses on the cultivation and development of the mind, any analysis focusing only on physical description is significantly flawed. The term anamorphosis, from the greek ana (again) and morphe (shape), designates a variety of perspective experiments that can be traced back to the artistic developments of the 1500's and 1600's. Anamorphic devices challenge viewers to experience different forms of perceptual oscillation and uncertainty. Images shift in front of the eyes of puzzled spectators as they move from the center of the representation to the margins, or from one side to the other. (A) Wry Views demonstrates that much of the literature of the Spanish Golden Age is susceptible, and indeed requires, oblique readings (as in anamorphosis).

Argument Encoding And Pragmatic Marking Of The Transitive Subject In Shiwilu (Kawapanan), Pilar Valenzuela

Shiwilu (a.k.a. Jebero) is a nearly extinct Kawapanan language from Peruvian Amazonia. The goal of this article is twofold. First, it investigates the obligatory cross-referencing of arguments in the complex Shiwilu verb. This system is predominantly nominative accusative, with the caveat that main clause object markers coincide with those conveying subject in one type of clause involving nominal predicates, as well as subject and object of dependent clauses. Second, this article provides a first analysis of the enclitic =ler, which may attach to transitive subjects and thus exhibits an ergative-like distribution. An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Numerous studies have examined the development of body image among people, especially girls and young women. Many factors have been associated with the development of body image dissatisfaction. Especially important are exposure to mass media and its relationship with three theoretical constructs: Awareness of a thin ideal, internalization of a thin ideal, and perceived pressures to be thin. Extending existing research, this study examined through experimentation the relationships among exposure to American media content and the awareness and internalization of the American norms and expectations for thinness, pressures to adopt these norms, and Trinidadian female adolescents' body image satisfaction.
