This article is a literary analysis on Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai' Vasilisa Maligina (1923) by using a feminist approach. Issues on masculinity are the focus of the analysis. The main argument of this article is that through the main character of this story - Vasilisa Maligina - Kollontai tried to expose the new image of Russian women by reconstructing the concept of Russian traditional masculinity in Russian society under former Uni Soviet communist government based on patriarchal culture.

Walaupun hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa manfaat koreksi kesalahan pada tulisan siswa bertentangan satu dengan yang lain, pengajar bahasa tidak dapat berhenti mengoreksi kesalahan-keslahan karena siswa sendiri menginginkan pengajar mengoreksi kesalahan-kesalahan mereka (Walz 1982). Masalahnya adalah harapan siswa kerap kali berbeda dengan keyakinan pengajar tentang koreksi kesalahan (Diab 2006). Dialek Melayu yang dipakai para pendatang asal Maluku Selatan di Belanda ini memperlihatkan rangkaian demonstrativa dan endofora yang tidak ditemukan dalam bahasa Indonesia baku. Makalah ini mengkaji semantik dari rangkaian unsur deiktik tersebut dalam kerangka linguistik kognitif dan menjelaskannya sebagai sesuatu yang muncul dari bahasa ibu penutur, dengan mencontohkan bahasa Meher dan Leti. Makalah ini ditutup dengan mengaitkan penemuannya dengan bahasa Melayu Tangsi yang diduga adalah nenek moyang dari dialek Melayu yang digunakan pendatang Maluku di Belanda. Dinyatakan bahwa pencarian asal-usul dialek turunan Melayu Pijin sejenis ini hanya bisa dilakukan dengan berfokus pada makna yang disampaikan lewat konstruksikonstruksinya.

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) has become a very influential interdisciplinary approach, which views a discourse as a form of social practice. Antipoligamy discourse, as a social practice persisted for a long time ago in Indonesia, offers chalenging discussions in the perspective of CDA. Teun van Dijk, as one of the pioneers of CDA, articulates ideology as the basis of the social representations of groups. R.M. Noto Soeroto was one of the Indonesian writers who wrote in Dutch. His poems and essays in Dutch were well appreciated by both the Dutch and the Indonesian society in the Netherlands. He published his works in Oedaya: Majalah bergambar untuk Indonesia, a magazine (1923-1931) that was founded by him. His works can be categorized as Dutch-East Indies literature. This correlational study is to show the role of deductive and inductive reasoning abilities as aspects of cognitive development on expository text comprehension among high school students who already have a capacity to think in conceptual and hyphotetical ways and to examine how they correlate and influence the text comprehension process. This study has broaden our knowledge of language and thinking, as it is different from other previous studies that focused on comprehension process among elementary students, narrative, reading strategies, and comprehension difficulties. It is found that deductive reasoning is more significantly correlated to expository text comprehension than inductive reasoning. …

Urak Lawoi' yang berarti 'orang laut' adalah nama suku nelayan pengembara laut yang tersebar di Pulau Phuket (Thailand) dan Kepulauan Adang di sebelah selatannya. Bahasa mereka yang juga dikenal dengan nama Urak Lawoi' merupakan sebuah varietas Melayu yang khas. Dari pemeriannya yang ada tampaklah bahwa bahasa itu menyimpang dari varietas Melayu di daratan Thailand Selatan dan di semenanjung Malaysia. Languages such as Turkish, Korean, and Japanese exhibit evidential morphemes encoding information source as direct or indirect evidence. Investigations of child acquisition of evidential systems (notably, Aksu-Koc, 1988; Choi, 1995; Matsui, Yamamoto & McCagg, 2006) reveal that development of evidential meaning is a protracted process, relying on children’s incremental understanding of mental states. This study examines child production of five Quechua suffixes, including three evidential enclitics (direct evidence, hearsay, report), and two verb inflections that differentiate perceived and unperceived events in past time. The current study set out to replicate and expand the results of a study by Pruss (2007) which found that information is lost when interviews are conducted through interpreters. In the present study, Viewers (i.e., mock eyewitnesses) fluent in Spanish watched a video of a burglary and then were interviewed in Spanish about what they had seen. Half of Viewers were randomly assigned to be interviewed by an English-speaking Interviewer through a bilingual Interpreter (Interpreter condition), and the other half were randomly assigned to be interviewed directly by a Spanish speaking Interviewer with no Interpreter (No Interpreter condition). Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Teachers in two multi-grade study groups in elementary schools with large populations of Latino students reflect on the implementation of an open-ended mathematical task. IN this research, interviews and study group discussions provide the teachers’ reflections on the implementation of the task and on their practices in general that create learning environments for their Latino students. Multiple categories representing the teacher reflections were developed and our focus is on those practices that teachers consider effective and specific factors that impact practice. The design of this study proved to be especially useful in promoting teacher reflective conversation.

Pond-Women Revelations: The Subaltern Registers In Maithil Women's Expressive Forms, Coralynn V. Davis

Ponds are ubiquitous in the Maithil region of Nepal, and they figure prominently in folk narratives and ceremonial paintings produced by women there. I argue that in Maithil women's folktales, as in their paintings, the trope of ponds shifts the imaginative register toward women's perspectives and the importance of women's knowledge and influence in shaping Maithil society, even as this register shift occurs within plots featuring male protagonists. I argue further that in the absence of a habit of exegesis in their expressive arts, and given the cross-referential, dialogic nature of expressive practices, a methodology that draws into interpretive conversation …
