Performing Modernity In Turkey: Conflicts Of Masculinity, Sexuality, And The Köçek Dancer, Brittany Giselle Haynes Feb 2014

Performing Modernity In Turkey: Conflicts Of Masculinity, Sexuality, And The Köçek Dancer, Brittany Giselle Haynes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis reexamines the history of the köçek dancer in Turkey and thereby opens modern heteronormative constructs of masculinity and sexuality to contestation, particularly as they have been symbolically embodied by the rural population of Anatolia. It traces the evolution of the köçek dancer from the early modern Ottoman Empire when the dancer embodied notions of divine love and the ideal of beauty as a young male object of adult men's desires. In the nineteenth century, perceptions of the köçek began to change, primarily among Ottoman elites, whose modernization efforts were influenced by the European gaze and travelers' Orientalist interpretations …

In depth study of Western media's coverage of the rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt after the fall of former president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. Not only using key events between the West/ United States and the Middle East over the last 40 years to show how current events are reported but also investigating where and how the media receives their information to report. The outside and internal influences put upon western media are also under investigation in this paper and how those influences insure that their own interests supersede that of complete and accurate reporting …

Syrian Arabic Synonyms, Jeremy Leland Palmer, Dr. Dil Parkinson Jan 2014

Syrian Arabic Synonyms, Jeremy Leland Palmer, Dr. Dil Parkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In Arabic there is a fundamental schism between the formal standard language and the scores of dialects spoken throughout Middle Eastern countries. Nearly all newspapers, magazines and television programs throughout the Middle East exclusively utilize the formal standard language. In contrast, the spoken dialects are rarely recorded in a written or audio format, even though they are what the people of the Middle East actually use in daily communication. Unfortunately, most grammar books and dictionaries are only available in the formal variant. The dearth of colloquial language-learning materials causes extreme difficulty for students who want to become more familiar with …

The Quintessence Of Tian In Classical Chinese Literature, Richard Torgerson, Dr. David Honey Jan 2014

The Quintessence Of Tian In Classical Chinese Literature, Richard Torgerson, Dr. David Honey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Tian, commonly translated as Heaven, was the core of religious and political ideology during the beginning of the Zhou dynasty.i The Zhou dynasty (1027- 221 BC) was a period started and shaped by a belief in Tian, Tianming (the right to rule bestowed by Heaven), and the Tianzi (the emperor – or son of Heaven). But just what, or who, was Tian to the Chinese during the Zhou dynasty? During this study I examined five modern and five ancient scholars’ views concerning Tian. I utilized Classical Chinese texts and numerous translations, with a special focus on the Book of …

The Journals Of Reba Booth, First Lds Sister Missionary To The Middle East, Laura R. Ostler, Dr. James A. Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Even before September 11, 2001 exploded the region onto global consciousness, the Middle East had a special fascination for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church doctrine ties modern Saints with ancient Israel. The “gathering of Israel” is a topic commonly discussed in formal and informal LDS gatherings. In fact, this interest has existed since the Church began; a Latter-day Saint dedicated the Holy Land only a few years after the Church was officially organized.

The Effects Of Modern Standard Arabic Immersion Programs Versus Traditional Preschool Attendance On The Reading And Composition Scores Of Arab Children, Jennifer Eschler, Dr. R. Kirk Belnap Jan 2014

The Effects Of Modern Standard Arabic Immersion Programs Versus Traditional Preschool Attendance On The Reading And Composition Scores Of Arab Children, Jennifer Eschler, Dr. R. Kirk Belnap

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used for schooling and for writing in the Arab world, it is not the oral means of communication. Several dialects of Arabic exist. Each of these is related to Modern Standard Arabic, but vocabulary and some basic grammar rules differ according to geographic location. Although primary schools are conducted in MSA, most preschool instruction is in the local dialect or there is a combination of dialect and MSA with the amount of MSA varying according to school and instructor.

Cross-Cultural Acceptance In Post-September 11th America: A Recital Of Middle-Eastern Music, Sarah Mcdonald, Dr. James Toronto Jan 2014

Cross-Cultural Acceptance In Post-September 11th America: A Recital Of Middle-Eastern Music, Sarah Mcdonald, Dr. James Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The attacks of September 11th were designed to strike fear into the hearts of Americans, but the terrorists did not take into account the fact that the blanket term “Americans” includes many of Middle Eastern descent. The aftermath of the hijackings found Muslims, Sikhs, and others of Eastern appearance targeted by unjustly vindictive acts. As a student with many Muslim friends, I wanted to do something to promote cultural acceptance on campus and beyond. My double major in Near Eastern Studies and Vocal Pedagogy prompted the idea of researching authentic classical Middle Eastern music and performing it in recital as …

Creating A Program To Assist Missionaries Understand The Japanese Written World, Daniel Hick, Dr. Masakazu Watanabe Jan 2014

Creating A Program To Assist Missionaries Understand The Japanese Written World, Daniel Hick, Dr. Masakazu Watanabe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The plight of the non-native missionary in Japan is adverse due to the extreme communication barriers that are encountered in every day life. Japanese is vastly different from Western languages. In the MTC missionaries receive sufficient training in the spoken language but are taught little or nothing about the written language. Therefore, upon entering the field of service, non-native missionaries are confounded by the written world that surrounds them.

Classic Chinese Fiction: Building A 21st Century Bridge For Ancient Chinese Literature, J Michael Isom, Dr. Gary Williams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Prior to the European Renaissance, China continually led the world in virtually every conceivable field of thought and technology. Although they have temporarily fallen behind most of the industrialized world due to the lingering effects of several poor political and economic policies from the 19th and early 20th centuries, in many ways this sleeping giant is awaking once again. In fact, experts believe that, if current trends continue, China will even surpass the United States in economic and military prowess by the year 2025.

Arabic Reading Instruction, Joshua Gubler, Steven Robertson, Dr. Kirk Belnap Jan 2014

Arabic Reading Instruction, Joshua Gubler, Steven Robertson, Dr. Kirk Belnap

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The “proficiency movement” of recent years has significantly changed the way Arabic is taught in the United States. No longer can teachers focus solely on reading and grammar in the classroom. They must additionally divide already limited class time between teaching listening and speaking skills. Because of this emphasis on speaking skills, many students, especially those learning less commonly taught or very difficult languages, do not learn to read well. In an effort to solve this problem, many teachers are looking for new ways to help students learn reading, by its nature an essentially personal endeavor, outside the classroom. To …

Timing The Introduction Of Kanji In The Study Of Japanese As A Second Language, Kerilee Grames, Dr. Robert A. Russell Jan 2014

Timing The Introduction Of Kanji In The Study Of Japanese As A Second Language, Kerilee Grames, Dr. Robert A. Russell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Japanese language has a reputation of being difficult for native English speakers to master as a second language because of kanji, a complex, character alphabet that the Japanese borrowed from China. One of the greatest struggles for teachers of Japanese as a second language (JSL) is knowing when to introduce these foreign characters to their students. As a student who has struggled to learn kanji, and one who intends to also teach it, I proposed to study the research that has already been done in this area, to observe teachers of JSL in both Japan and America, and to …

The Ritual Use Of Music In Ancient Israelite Worship, Mindy J. Anderson, Dr. Stephen D. Ricks Jan 2014

The Ritual Use Of Music In Ancient Israelite Worship, Mindy J. Anderson, Dr. Stephen D. Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Music was an important part of the ancient Israelite worship experience. The Hebrew Bible includes multiple references to music, including verses which specifically associate music with prophecy and temple ritual. Within the Israelite religious hierarchy, certain Levites were set apart as musicians to aid worshippers in keeping divine commands to remember and offer thanksgiving to the LORD. A Levitical choir and orchestra, composed of lyres, harps, cymbals, and trumpets accompanied the daily sacrifices at the temple. The psalms accompanied these ritual acts as the Israelites gathered in holy places and invoked the name of the LORD. Israelite worshippers sang songs …

Los Papeles Del Infierno, Enrique Buenaventura, Carlos Gardeazábal Bravo

Global Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ayatollah Khomeini’S Political Theory And Public Interest, Mohsen Kadivar Jan 2014

Ayatollah Khomeini’S Political Theory And Public Interest, Mohsen Kadivar

Governance Programme Papers

This article analyses the evolution of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s political theory over four major periods – Qom, Najaf, Paris and Tehran – demonstrating how his thought shifted from a semi‑democratic constitutional vision to the doctrine of al‑wilayat al‑mutlaqah lil‑faqih (the absolute guardianship of the jurist). In the Qom period, Khomeini endorsed a constitutional government supervised by jurists, distancing himself from the notion of direct clerical rule. His Najaf period marked a decisive turn toward a theocratic model, asserting that jurists possessed authority equivalent to that of the Prophet and Shi’ite Imams in public affairs. During the Paris period, Khomeini emphasised …

Mammonymy, Maternal-Line Names, And Cultural Identification: Clues From The Onomasticon Of Hellenistic Uruk, Stephanie Langin-Hooper, Laurie Pearce Jan 2014

Mammonymy, Maternal-Line Names, And Cultural Identification: Clues From The Onomasticon Of Hellenistic Uruk, Stephanie Langin-Hooper, Laurie Pearce

Art History Research

The onomasticon of Hellenistic Uruk demonstrates that, in some cases, individuals with Greek names were included in otherwise Babylonian families. Often, such Greek names have been interpreted by scholars as evidence for Hellenization. This article suggests an alternate explanation, based on evidence throughout the family trees for a series of naming practices that focus on the perpetuation of names of female relatives and transmission of preferred family names through maternal lines. Particularly important to this discussion are the practices of mammonymy, a term coined here to refer to papponymy’s gendered parallel, i.e., the naming of a girl after her grandmother …

Patriotism Among Muslim American Opinion Leaders, Reem Abou-Samra Jan 2014

Patriotism Among Muslim American Opinion Leaders, Reem Abou-Samra

Wayne State University Dissertations

A significant degree of public opinion research has been conducted on Muslim Americans, but very little has focused on their perceptions. This study explores how opinion leaders address the question of patriotism, Americanness, hyphenated identities, and the implications of such a discourse. The study is confined to Wayne County, MI, because of the significant role Muslim Americans have played in labor struggles, local culture, civil rights, and their visibility. This study is significant because ongoing issues have triggered media attention on Muslim Americans and questioned their patriotism and Americanness, such as the "Ground Zero Mosque" debate, the "anti-Sharia" bill proposals, …

Written With The Finger Of God: Divine And Human Writing In Exodus, Brian R. Doak Jan 2014

Written With The Finger Of God: Divine And Human Writing In Exodus, Brian R. Doak

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

"The presence of writing in the book of Exodus must be considered not only for its contribution to the narrative as story, but also as a witness to several key socio-political issues (such as the interplay of textuality and orality in ancient Israel), for the role of writing in the history of Israel's religion, and for the struggle to define, through several centuries and editorial layers, the nature of YHWH's "true image'' in the world."

Performance And Monumentality In The "Altar Of Tukulti-Ninurta", Stephanie Langin-Hooper Jan 2014

Performance And Monumentality In The "Altar Of Tukulti-Ninurta", Stephanie Langin-Hooper

Art History Research

The Ancient Near Eastern monument known as the “Altar of Tukulti-Ninurta” is traditionally analyzed as a divine symbol-socle used in the cult cella of the Ištar Temple at Aššur. This chapter – which refers to the “Altar” by its ancient term, “nemedu” – presents a re-evaluation of the monument’s archaeological context, as well as a consideration of comparative art historical evidence. Both data sets suggest that the nemedu in question was actually intended for use outside the temple doorway. Based on this understanding of the nemedu’s functional context, a more public viewership must be reconstructed for the monument, necessitating, in …

Embodiment Of The Halaf: Sixth Millennium Figurines From Northern Mesopotamia, Ellen H. Belcher Jan 2014

Embodiment Of The Halaf: Sixth Millennium Figurines From Northern Mesopotamia, Ellen H. Belcher

Publications and Research

This dissertation answers the question, "What are Halaf figurines?" In response to that question, this study examines a corpus of anthropomorphic figurines from archaeological sites dating to the Halaf period (Sixth Millennium cal BCE) known from excavations in Turkey and Syria. Included in this dissertation is a detailed catalog of 197 figurine examples, both whole and fragmented, and analysis of their excavated contexts from seven Halaf sites in Turkey and nine sites in Syria. The study also reviews and discusses existing literature on Halaf and figurine studies and examines and critiques modern biases, assumptions, and influences, especially as related to …

Atatürk's Balancing Act: The Role Of Secularism In Turkey, Patrick G. Rear Jan 2014

Atatürk's Balancing Act: The Role Of Secularism In Turkey, Patrick G. Rear

Global Tides

The intersection of religion and politics in the form of a civil religion has been present since time immemorial. This paper looks specifically to the relationship between Turkey’s development of a secular civil religion after gaining independence and the advancing of women’s rights and democratic values. In examining the intersections of state and religion in a secular Islamic society, it draws parallels to the French civil religion as it came to be following the French Revolution. Though Atatürk and other secularists were strong forces in developing the civil religion, the paper also examines liberal democratic and conservative Islamic groups in …

Egyptian Arabic Plurals In Theory And Computation, Lindley Winchester Jan 2014

Egyptian Arabic Plurals In Theory And Computation, Lindley Winchester

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This paper examines the plural inflectional processes present in Egyptian Arabic, with specific focus on the complex broken plural system. The data used in this examination is a set of 114 lexemes from a dictionary of the Egyptian Arabic variety by Badawi and Hinds (1984) collected through comparison of singular to plural template correspondences proposed by Gadalla (2004). The theoretical side of this analysis tests the proposed realizational approach in Kihm (2006) named the “Root-and-Site Hypothesis” against a variety of broken plural constructions in Egyptian Arabic. Categorizing concatenative and non-concatenative morphological processes as approachable in the same manner, this framework …
