Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, the representation of women in post-revolutionary Iranian cinema has been one of the main concerns of Iranian officials. This concern caused the enforcement of cinematic restrictions on Iranian cinema in 1982, known as the Islamic Codes of Modesty. The prohibition of the close-ups of women’s faces was one of these cinematic limitations. Throughout the 2,000 years of Iranian Jewish history, women usually were either illiterate or silenced. Iranian Jewish women in exile have been making up for their foremothers by creating prose literature at a fast pace in the last two decades. Through their poetry, novels and memoirs, they validate the claim that with financial security, access to education, and freedom of speech—rarely accessible to Iranian women until the twentieth century—they can shine. This article explores the history and background of Jewish women writers of Iranian heritage.

Linguistic Rhythm And Grammatical Structure In Afghan Persian, Janet Mueller Bing Jan 1980

Linguistic Rhythm And Grammatical Structure In Afghan Persian, Janet Mueller Bing

Afghan Persian has a rhythm rule that shifts a strong stress to the left when it occurs near another strong stress. Metrical theory (see LLBA 12/1, 7800555) states this shift as a change in the configuration of hierarchical values where the relationships "stronger than" & "weaker than" apply not only to adjacent syllables, but also to groups of syllables, words, & phrases. This rule accounts for the differences in stress patterns on words in isolation & in some phrases. By assuming the rhythm rule & a rule of stress assignment, it is possible to account for both word & phrasal …
