The High School Piccoloist: A Resource Guide, Rebecca Needham
The High School Piccoloist: A Resource Guide, Rebecca Needham
Dissertations, 2020-current
This project aims to curate a piccolo resource guide for high school music educators and their students. Currently, there are limited pedagogical materials available for beginning piccoloists or their music educators, and these materials are primarily scattered across decades of The Instrumentalist and the now-defunct Flute Talk journals. In addition, future band directors are rarely required to study auxiliary instruments like the piccolo in their collegiate coursework. These two factors combine to create a detrimental situation: frequently, neither teacher nor student in a typical high school setting has appropriate resources to understand the instrument and its essential differences from the …
Imperative Duality Of Music Teacher Technological Education, Drew X. Coles, Cato Zane
Imperative Duality Of Music Teacher Technological Education, Drew X. Coles, Cato Zane
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Referencing the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) framework articulated by Mishra and Koehler, this article explains the need for educators to acknowledge and educate themselves regarding different proficiency tracks within the world of music technological content knowledge. We argue that our concept of “Imperative Duality” elaborates upon, and works to balance, the three elements of the TPACK framework: content knowledge, technological expertise, and pedagogical skills. With imperative duality, we explore the idea that educators must possess both content and technological knowledge to facilitate effective and comprehensive music tech instruction. This article also explores some music technology content and technological …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This workshop presents a mobile-friendly Web Audio application for a “technology ensemble play-along” of Terry Riley’s 1964 composition In C. Attendees will join in a reading of In C using available web-enabled devices as musical instruments. We hope to demonstrate an accessible music-technology experience that relies on face-to-face interaction within a shared space. In this all-electronic implementation, no special musical or technical expertise is required.
Women Guitar Orchestra Conductors, 1885 To Present, Part 1, Mariette Stephenson
Women Guitar Orchestra Conductors, 1885 To Present, Part 1, Mariette Stephenson
Music Faculty Publications
Passion, innovation, musicianship: these are reflected in the careers and offerings of women and the guitar. As I continue my research on women’s contributions to guitar orchestras, I became interested in discovering how many women have led guitar orchestras since they began in the 1800’s and learn what women today are experiencing in this role. Guitar orchestras have played an important role in many musicians’ development throughout its history, but unfortunately women have been often unacknowledged and under-represented in this ensemble format’s leadership roles.
This article includes a list I have compiled of women guitar orchestra conductors (past/present), will discuss …
Influences On General Music Teachers' Mental Health During The Collective Trauma Of Covid-19, Abigail Van Klompenberg
Influences On General Music Teachers' Mental Health During The Collective Trauma Of Covid-19, Abigail Van Klompenberg
Visions of Research in Music Education
The purpose of this collective case study was to examine elementary music teachers’ mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research questions were: 1) What factors influenced music teachers’ mental health and well-being during COVID-19?; 2) How did music teachers support their own mental health and well-being during COVID-19?; 3) How might stakeholders (such as schools, administrators, and community members) better support educators during challenging times? Data included semi-structured interviews, informal observations, and a researcher journal. Participants were three elementary music educators teaching K–5 music in geographically and demographically diverse public schools throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Through “data …
A Multiple Case Study Of Adolescent Piano Students: Examining Motivation Through The Lens Of Interest Development, Carla Lucia Salas Ruiz
A Multiple Case Study Of Adolescent Piano Students: Examining Motivation Through The Lens Of Interest Development, Carla Lucia Salas Ruiz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
One way of understanding motivation is through the factors that influence it. These factors analyzed as psychological constructs give rise to the notion of motivation variables such as interest. Interest is a powerful variable that affects student motivation to learn (Hidi & Renninger, 2006; Hulleman et al., 2017; O’Keefe et al. 2017; Renninger & Hidi, 2016; Tin, 2013). In 2006, Hidi and Renninger proposed the “Four-Phase Interest Development Model” for the characterization of interest in learning. According to this model, learners can move from a situational level of interest development to a well-developed individual interest, in a sequential manner. This …
Walking Carefully Towards Bridging The Gap: Exploring Australian Music Educator Voices About Teaching Indigenous Music, Dawn Joseph, Bradley Merrick
Walking Carefully Towards Bridging The Gap: Exploring Australian Music Educator Voices About Teaching Indigenous Music, Dawn Joseph, Bradley Merrick
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Facilitating an inclusive pedagogy to close the gap that exists within the teaching of Indigenous Knowledge in Australia is a tall order for many teachers. This paper draws on responses to a national study and explores how music educators include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music and culture into their practice. An online survey (December 2022-February 2023, N=109) informed the findings. Using thematic analysis, two themes (teaching challenges and opportunities, and bridging the gap) are discussed and key recommendations offered. Findings suggest that walking carefully towards bridging the gap is an opportunity for educational change in contemporary Australian classrooms.
What Is A Folk Song? An Exploration Through Collection, Gregory S. Conway
What Is A Folk Song? An Exploration Through Collection, Gregory S. Conway
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Over decades of work, scholars have created varying definitions of folk songs. While many have developed clear definitions (Karpeles, 1973; Lornell, 1993; Seeger, 1948; Texas Folklore Society, n.d.), others have concluded that no true definition exists (Brumfield, 1998; Nettl 2011). This lack of clarity in what a folk song is invites an exploration into how we define this genre. The purpose of this multiple case study was two-fold. First, I collected songs sung by families within a rural school community and examined them by using interview data to identify the characteristics of folk music in this context. Second, I shared …

Musical training has been shown to have a positive influence on a variety of skills, including auditory-based tasks and nonmusical cognitive and executive functioning tasks; however, because previous investigations have yielded mixed results regarding the relationship between musical training and these skills, the purpose of this study was to examine and compare the auditory processing skills of children who receive focused, daily musical training with those with more limited, generalized musical training. Sixteen typically developing children (second–fourth grade) from two different schools receiving different music curricula were assessed on measures of pitch discrimination, temporal sequencing, and prosodic awareness. The results …

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
The interpersonal teaching practices of teachers of singing and speech-language pathologists are examined in this mixed-method research study. The aim of this research is to identify common teaching themes and to determine how the disciplines of voice pedagogy and speech-language pathology agree and vary regarding interpersonal interactions with voice users (i.e., students, patients, and clients).
This research aims to identify the areas of overlap and disparity in the fields of voice pedagogy and speech-language pathology to determine where one field might positively influence the other. First, based upon standards set by speech-language pathologists and teachers of singing, this research identifies …
Women’S Contributions To Guitar Orchestras Prior To 1930, Mariette Stephenson
Women’S Contributions To Guitar Orchestras Prior To 1930, Mariette Stephenson
Music Faculty Publications
Guitar orchestras were at their height of popularity in the late 1800's and early 1900's in Europe, South America and North America, and played an important role in the promotion of the suffragette movement. Although the popularity of this ensemble type declined after WW1, they have seen a strong resurgence within the past 20 years. Many influential women in the guitar world, including Madame Sydney Pratton and Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, played crucial roles in the development of guitar orchestras. That continues to this day with composers such as the internationally renown Dutch composer Annette Kruisbrink writing works for this ensemble format …

Research about music pervades every discipline because music touches every area of life. Studies revealing the salutary effects of music can be found not only in music educator research, but in research in psychology, speech and hearing, child development, neuroscience, and increasingly, health and wellness, aging, rehabilitation and recovery. Since my focus is especially in the areas of language and literacy, I research the positive effects of music on reading, writing, and learning languages - and of this, there is no shortage. In this brief Academia article, I share what I’d like to call an “homage-with-references” to our great Superpower, …
A Narrative Case Study Of Transfer Students In Instrumental Music Education, Ashley Glenn
A Narrative Case Study Of Transfer Students In Instrumental Music Education, Ashley Glenn
Dissertations
Transfer students in music fields face challenges that are different from other fields of study. Research has shown that transfer students in music are expected to acclimate and operate as upperclassmen with minimal onboarding while also potentially having to retake courses they received credit for at the community college level. This study examines the experiences of five transfer students in music education through the lens of Schlossberg’s transition theory and Dewey’s model of transaction. Building on existing transfer student research, it asks: what do transfer students experience in terms of acceptance and self-integration, and how do these experiences affect transfer …

Lived Experience Of Music Therapists As Musician-Therapists, Kotoe Suzuki
Lived Experience Of Music Therapists As Musician-Therapists, Kotoe Suzuki
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
The dissertation research explored the lived experiences of music therapists who are performing musicians. A conceptual foundation of music therapists as musicians, a “musician-therapist” who is deeply versed in the unique properties of music can be identified in the literature (Ansdell & Verney, 2008; Nordoff & Robbins, 1973). The objectives of this study were to explore three topics: 1) deeper understandings of music therapists’ musical improvisation both in clinical and nonclinical settings, 2) the connection between music therapists’ personal and professional musical growth, and 3) identity formation. A qualitative method was chosen for this research including reflexive/embodied/interpretative phenomenology, and arts-based …
Playing Without Pain, Francesca Leo
Playing Without Pain, Francesca Leo
Honors Projects
Musicians across all career stages experience performance-based pain and injury, and due to demanding rehearsal and performance schedules, collegiate musicians are uniquely vulnerable to these conditions. To provide collegiate musicians the most effective coping mechanisms for performance-based pain and injury, it is important to first understand the extent to which collegiate musicians are affected by these conditions. The purpose of this multi-tiered study was to create a customized web resource to connect collegiate musicians with local, accessible treatment and prevention options. An initial questionnaire was distributed to music students attending Bowling Green State University, and this questionnaire received 45 valid …

At MayDay Group Colloquium 24 in East Lansing, MI, Sandra Stauffer (2012) charged that: "If we want change, we need to start telling different stories . . . we work with beginning teachers, and we worry about teacher identities. We tell them a story...one that does not serve them well. A story that they will be prepared. Maybe we should tell stories of self-making, of re-making and replacing ourselves. Of preparation as a constantly evolving teacher story. Maybe then transformation can be the norm."
Sandy’s comments of transformation resonated strongly with the very project I was presenting at the same …

Relationships Among Elementary Teachers' Self-Perceptions Of Musical Intelligence, Perceived Value Of Instruction Through Music, And Classroom Instructional Practices, Peggy Jo Hubbard Mccullough
Dissertations
This study was designed to examine educators' perceptions and practices of instruction through music. Using primarily quantitative methods for collection and analysis of data, correlations were sought among the primary variables: elementary teachers' perceptions of the value of instruction through music, their self-reported frequency of instruction through music, and their self-evaluated level of musical intelligence. The hypothesis for this study was that a positive correlation existed between any two of the three variables.
Participants included elementary teachers representing instructional grades one through five from four elementary schools in the southeastern part of the United States. To collect data, a survey …
