Freezing The Music And Fetishising The Subject: The Audiovisual Dramaturgy Of Michel Van Der Aa, Jonathan W. Marshall

When, with our eyes shut we run our hands along a surface, the rubbing of our fingers against the surface, and especially the varied play of our joints, provide a series of sensations, which differ only by their qualities and which exhibit a certain order in time. In this paper, I will explore the sonic relationship of sound to the development of new imaging technologies through Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM). In 2003, UCLA scientist, James Gimzewski, positioned a sensitive instrument called an atomic force microscope over a cell to try to detect its motion and the microscope picked up regular …

Much of the power of the cinema experience lies with the sound track, and the way it interacts with what happens on the screen. Soundtrack composition has become a complex art, where musical ideas are enhanced by sound reproduction technologies and complicated by sound effects demanded by the action. The effects of certain ranges of low frequency sound which are featured in the creation and presentation of both film music composition and cinematic sound effects can add an unique dimension to the experience of the soundtrack, and indeed the total cinematic experience. The New String Quartet : The Evolution Of The Hyperquartet, Rachael Dease Jan 2007

The New String Quartet : The Evolution Of The Hyperquartet, Rachael Dease

Theses : Honours

This article explores the phenomenon of the rejuvenation of the string quartet in contemporary musical culture through the use of electronics. I will discuss how recent works; including my own works Spiral (1999) and Seven Ballads til Dawn (2007) have adopted some features of popular music and new technology, while still maintaining the integrity and flavour of their classical heritage. I will use several different examples to show the ways in which a quartet can become a "hyperquartet" through the use of amplification, effects processors and playback.

An Investigation Of Musical Life And Music Societies In Perth (Western Australia), 1900-1950, Jessica Sardi

This study is centred around music and music-making in Perth, Western Australia, from 1900-1950. It examines various parts of Perth's music history using both primary and secondary sources. Chapter one uses secondary sources, both musical and non-musical, to present an exposition on musical life in Perth in this period. The following two chapters move from macro history to micro history and are based on archival documents housed in the Battye Library. The progress of music in Perth, Western Australia-due to its relatively late colonisation in relation to the eastern states-trailed somewhat behind Melbourne and Sydney. However, once established, there were …
