Metric Organization In Modern Guitar Transcriptions Of Renaissance Music: An Annotated Bibliography, Diogo Alvarez Leite Duarte Nov 2018

Metric Organization In Modern Guitar Transcriptions Of Renaissance Music: An Annotated Bibliography, Diogo Alvarez Leite Duarte

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

The concept of meter in music has changed throughout the centuries and many related terms and concepts (such as bar, time signature, tactus and prolatio) have either emerged or disappeared from the vocabulary of the professional musician according to the mindset of each period. Consequently, the understanding of metric organization in Renaissance music by modern musicians is compromised, and so are modern editions of said repertoire, which are based in modern music notation. In informed editions, the decisions regarding the use of bar lines, if one is to avoid arbitrariness, should reflect a concern for conveying a metric idea …

Cycle Of 6ths Progression: Annotated Bibliography, Dave Majerus

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

The Cycle of 6ths is a chord progression that I first heard about from the Jazz guitarist Ted Greene, who was a skilled music theorist and had two books published on guitar harmony and chord progressions. Ted stated that he first learned of the cycle of 6ths from studying J.S. Bach. You may be wondering what a chord cycle of ____ is? A chord cycle is when you move chords in a certain intervallic pattern, eventually the cycle comes back around to the starting chord. For instance, if you move chords in 4ths starting on C you would have the …

One of the pinnacles of performance practice is that of creating a recognizable, individualistic sound. There are differing opinions on this matter in relation to how a trumpet sound is formed and changed through both player technique and equipment setup. The purpose of this study is to take an objective point of view on the matter, using what others have said as well as the science of sound production on the trumpet, to find a window in to how players use technique and equipment to their advantage in creating the sound they desire.

Electronic Dance Music: Is It Art? Selected Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is a genre of music that has enjoyed success. Although it grew out of art music in the twentieth century, EDM is considered popular music. But, is the future of EDM confined only within popular music or is there potential for it to influence or become art music? Or perhaps, is EDM already a form of art regardless of whether or not it is commonly seen as such? In response to such quandaries, this paper will form a method of critique to analyze EDM in comparison to art music. To do so, an overall understanding …
