A study of documents (Archives Départmentals de l'Eure, Série D3-5) concerning a music competition held in the town of Évreux in the last quarter of the 16th century. Composers were invited to submit motets and chansons through a variety of social and professional contacts, including the Catholic League, the court, the music printer Adrian le Roy, and perhaps the Académie de Poésie et de Musique of Jean-Antoine de Baïf.

Reviews some of the documentation concerning the Puy de Musique of the Confraternity of Saint Cecilia of the Norman town of Évreux and considers the circumstances of the composition and the musical fabric of Cantantibus Organis, a five-voice motet that was awarded the Puy's "silver organ" in 1583, by Orlando di Lasso, concluding that Lasso probably thought to submit the piece, which had been composed in 1579 or earlier, to the competition as he remembered the prize he won in 1575 as he worked on the publication of three volumes of his motets by his Munich printer, Adam Berg, in …

A discussion of documents concerning the Confraternity of Saint Cecilia of Évreux and its Puy de Musique (prizes awarded from 1575 to 1589) and an examination of the circumstances of the composition, as well as the musical fabric, of Domine Jesu Christe by Orlando di Lasso, which was awarded the "silver organ" in the inaugural year of the Puy. Proposes that the five-voice motet, a contrived display-piece including a quotation from Josquin, was composed expressly for the Puy.
