Fred Bartenstein: The Right Place At The Right Time, Kurt Mosser Apr 2016

Fred Bartenstein: The Right Place At The Right Time, Kurt Mosser

Kurt Mosser

Fred Bartenstein has always seemed to find himself perfectly situated to pursue his life-long interest in bluegrass music – as he puts it, “I’ve always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.” This luck has allowed him to find bluegrass in the most surprising places, whether at a private day school in New Jersey, or at Harvard University in the late 1960s. It has also meant that, among other things, he found himself attending the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va., becoming a bluegrass DJ at the age of 16, starting Muleskinner News magazine, and playing …

The Band Came Back (Sousa -1895/Clarke - 1926/Rager - 2016), Dan Rager Dec 2015

The Band Came Back (Sousa -1895/Clarke - 1926/Rager - 2016), Dan Rager

Dan Rager

PowerPoint Presentation:

The Band Came Back: For lack of a better description, this music was billed as a “fantastic episode.” To catch the audience by surprise it was always programmed by Sousa as the first piece after an intermission. The house lights were turned off, revealing an empty stage. Slowly and deliberately, the musicians entered, playing singly, in pairs, trios or quartets. Each played some popular tune upon entering, sometimes with an accompaniment provided by musicians already onstage. Only after all of his players had entered and were seated did Sousa make his appearance, conducting only the last note. Although …

History Of The Blues, Dan Rager

Dan Rager

This all inclusive History of the Blues introduction begins as early as 1400, when the first global trading routes began. Two early maps are enclosed from this period showing the direction and locations from which people, food and supplies were moved.

This research presentation illustrates African tribes such as the Arada, Dahomey and Fulani who sang music in their daily rituals and ceremonies long before they were moved to other continents. Early developmental music elements are introduced including spirituals, worksongs, Scottish ballads, Methodist and Baptist hymns, call and response, guttural effects, interpolated vocality, falsetto and blue notes. All of these …

Aesthetics In Culture, Dan Rager Nov 2014

Aesthetics In Culture, Dan Rager

Dan Rager

This article examines the role of aesthetics in art, music, non-art objects, and activities in daily life. It shows that recognition is vital to our understanding of art and art-objects and sometimes creates conflicts which ask, what does one do with art? The question becomes more confusing when we think about non-art objects and activities which concern our everyday experiences from eating, clothing, cleaning and dealing with life's natural elements. The author points out that Western cultures have a distinct artworld that is usually limited for special occasions set aside for that purpose. He suggests that aesthetics in culture is …

The Interpretation Of Sousa, Daniel Rager Nov 2014

The Interpretation Of Sousa, Daniel Rager

Dan Rager

This article creates a recording anthology from four of John P. Sousa's finest marches and includes "The Washington Post," "The Fairest of the Fair," "Hands Across the Sea," and "The Thunder." The titles were chosen because of their popularity as being the most recorded marches, and that they all have a common thread between them. Together, they create a unique collage of themes that when put together take on a new life. The author shows how all four compositions were assembled into a symphony titled Symphony on the Themes of Sousa written by Hollywood composer Ira Hearshen. Frederick Fennell recorded …

Johann Sebastian Bach's Wind/Brass Instruments And Scoring Techniques, Daniel Rager Nov 2014

Johann Sebastian Bach's Wind/Brass Instruments And Scoring Techniques, Daniel Rager

Dan Rager

Each time period has its own social, cultural and religious rules from which composers obey. Bach’s sacred and secular works walk a fine line and are hard to distinguish between, but each has been performed throughout the ages in a variety of settings. This paper investigates Bach’s: Ideologies and Scoring which include his petition of August 23, 1730, his Horn (Corno) and its many names and uses. The author details Bach’s trombone (s), how he use them and in what compositions they can be found as well as Bach’s trumpet (s), their various keys and uses including musical excerpts, ornaments …

Studying Britten: The Current Landscape Of Published Britten Scholarship, Jonathan Manton Nov 2013

Studying Britten: The Current Landscape Of Published Britten Scholarship, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

With Britten’s centenary celebrations comes the publication of a plethora of new research resources, now available to the Britten scholar. These include not only print, audio, and audiovisual publications, but also recent online initiatives, notably the Britten thematic catalogue, published this year. The past ten years have witnessed a significant advance in Britten scholarship, with many offering entirely new perspectives on Britten’s life and work. They offer a candor previously unknown to Britten publications, often discussing the more delicate side of the composer’s nature and its impact on his work, notably demonstrated by the loss-of-innocence theme that dominates many …

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle May 2012

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle

Daniel E. Prindle

This thesis proposes a methodology for understanding the form of a Baroque prelude, particularly the preludes to the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Violoncello written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Four musical dimensions, tonal structure, motive, texture, and the potential implications of a piece’s genre, parse the preludes in different ways. As the features of these musical dimensions undergo either an evolution or a dramatic change over the course of each prelude, they each suggest a different form. Points of change in each dimension delineate segments in the music. When aligned, these changes create significant formal junctures and suggest an overall form …

Fiestas, For 12 Percussionists, Bruno Louchourn Dec 2011

Fiestas, For 12 Percussionists, Bruno Louchourn

Bruno Louchouarn

Fiestas is conceptually inspired by the "Feasts" as social rituals. The musical process and form mirror aspects of group dynamic in these gatherings. Although a few individual players may at times dominate, the ensemble has to "conduct" itself with several sub-groups emerging and disappearing. The main theme, introduced by hand claps, is an oscillation slowly quickening to a fast trepidation, giving way to a stable polyrhythm. The degree of synchronization between players or groups of players varies and generally increases toward more order as the piece unfolds. I wanted to impart a sense of “orchestra” to the group with relatively …

Ruth Crawford's "Spiritual Concept": The Sound-Ideals Of An Early American Modernist, 1924-1930, Judith Tick Feb 2011

Ruth Crawford's "Spiritual Concept": The Sound-Ideals Of An Early American Modernist, 1924-1930, Judith Tick

Judith Tick

This article investigates the musical thought and stylistic evolution of the American modernist composer Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953) in her formative years. It shows the relationship of style and idea to what she termed "spiritual concept": the core of her transcendental modernism. The sources of Crawford's spiritual aesthetics are Theosophy, Eastern religious philosophy, nineteenth-century American Transcendentalism, and the imaginative tradition of Walt Whitman. Thus Crawford drew on an eclectic legacy of ideas that had been linked in American intellectual life since the turn of the century. Documentation of her thought is based on unpublished diaries, poems, and correspondence. The mediation …

'Some Quite Nice Little Tunes': An Overview Of The Preparation And Recording Of The Incipits For The Britten Thematic Catalogue, Jonathan Manton Nov 2010

'Some Quite Nice Little Tunes': An Overview Of The Preparation And Recording Of The Incipits For The Britten Thematic Catalogue, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

Due for completion in 2013, the Britten thematic catalogue, an online musicological research tool that will present detailed individual records charting Britten's entire compositional output (approximately 1,200 works both published and unpublished including all juvenilia), is currently being compiled at the Britten-Pears Foundation in the United Kingdom. As this resource will be published exclusively online, it is the project's intention to fully employ the benefits afforded to the catalog through its virtual format, specifically when presenting thematic incipits for each work. In addition to typeset incipits, which in the case of the Britten thematic catalogue will extend beyond the traditional 'opening fragment of music,' …

Documenting Young Britten: An Overview Of The Cataloguing And Technical Solutions Developed During The First Phase Of The Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, Jonathan Manton Dec 2008

Documenting Young Britten: An Overview Of The Cataloguing And Technical Solutions Developed During The First Phase Of The Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

The Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, currently underway at the Britten-Pears Foundation, aims to produce a fully integrated online resource presenting, for the first time, a complete chronological listing of Britten’s entire output both published and unpublished, including all juvenilia. Of the estimated 1,200 works to be included in the catalogue, approximately 735 constitute the composer’s juvenilia, the documenting and analysis of which has been the core aim of the project’s first stage over the past three years. The article outlines the bespoke technical and cataloguing solutions developed during this initial stage to deal with many of the challenges presented as a result of developing …
